Homemade water-filling float. Chub fishing using a water-filled float Combination with a feeder

Chub is one of the most coveted trophies among fishermen. There is probably not a single fisherman who has not seen this beautiful fish at least once. You can find chub almost everywhere. The only exceptions are heavily overgrown standing reservoirs. Here the chub lacks oxygen. But you can find it in any river. This fish is very impressive in size.

But it is not only from this point of view that the chub is valuable for the fisherman. After all, when playing, this fish offers incredible resistance. Therefore, the fisherman has a rush of adrenaline into his blood. The fisherman gets exactly what he went fishing for. He gets emotions! When fishing for chub, you can use almost any tackle. But the most spectacular is fishing with a tackle with a water ball. What this type of gear is and how to use it to catch fish will be discussed below!

Tackle for fishing with a water-filled float.

In fact, there are simply no strict requirements for gear in the case of water balloon fishing. You can use almost any rod. The main condition is that the fisherman feels comfortable working with it. Moreover, it doesn’t matter whether the rod is telescopic or plug-in. Since the bite is determined visually. The same goes for the length of the rod. You should use a form that is convenient to work with. It is for this reason that excessively long rods should be avoided when fishing from the shore. At the same time, on a narrow river, a long rod allows you to perform very precise wiring.

The next item is the coil.

Again, there are no special requirements for it. You can use a multiplier, spinning or inertial reel. Most often, long casting is not required. Since the bait is floated to the fish’s resting place. And almost any reel can handle this task. The main condition is that at least 100 meters of fishing line be placed on the spool. Because you often have to fish at a very considerable distance. And while fishing for strong fish, you may have to give up the fishing line. There must be some stock!

If in the case of spinning fishing a braided cord is most often used, then when fishing with tackle with a water ball it is better to stick to an ordinary monofilament line. This line is not as noticeable in the water as a braided line. In addition, it is capable of stretching, which plays into the hands of the fisherman when fishing for large prey. When fishing for chub, you should use monofilament fishing line with a diameter of 0.2 to 0.25 mm. The specific diameter should be selected based on the size of the intended production. The larger the chub in the fishing area, the thicker the fishing line should be.

But the basis of this tackle is an ordinary water ball (water-filling float).

Surely a person who is far from the fishing world, at the first glance at this thing, will not be able to immediately determine what it is needed for. Instead of the usual float, an ordinary transparent plastic or glass ball is used, which has two valves. Through one valve you can draw water into the body, and through another valve you can drain this same water. Thanks to the transparent body, the ball is almost invisible in the water. This means that the chub is not afraid of such equipment. In fact, the ball functions not only as a float, but also as a kind of tugboat.

A leash with a hook is placed either in front of the ball or after it, or maybe a mixed installation -

It all depends on the specific preferences of the angler, as well as on the fishing conditions. The leash should be very thin and the hook as inconspicuous as possible. Only under this condition can you count on a chub bite. And this whole structure should be quite light. Since a hook that is too heavy can simply drown the bait. And the chub has an extremely negative attitude towards food that is found in the water column, while attacking almost any object that is on its surface.

Sometimes when fishing with a tackle with a water-filled float, foam plastic is used as a bait. It provides the bait with additional buoyancy.

Where and how to catch?

The first step is to establish visual contact with your potential prey. That is why it is best to fish on a sunny day. In this case, polarized glasses will be of great service to the fisherman. You should try not to scare away a school of chub. It is best to take a position several tens of meters upstream, and then float the ball to the flock’s camp site. If the water-filled float is quite light, then you can cast it into the flock’s parking area. Sometimes a splash can not scare away a chub, but attract it. But here everything is very individual.

If you are fishing in a fairly large body of water, you can catch an almost full ball of water. Then the equipment will become heavy and long casting will not cause any difficulties for the angler. But if the fishing takes place in a small body of water and long casting is not required, the water-filling float should be left empty or just a little water should be added to it. There will be no noise when casting, which means that the chub will not have any suspicions about the equipment.

Bait selection

The bait should look as natural as possible. In order to understand what can be used as bait, you should simply walk along the shore of the reservoir. Surely grasshoppers will jump in different directions from you, and various caterpillars will be found on the branches of trees standing near the pond. And from these same trees, fruits periodically fall into the water.

The main bait is insects. You can use grasshoppers, locusts, and various beetles

and dragonflies. In this case, you need to put on bait so that the insect remains alive. In this case, its movements on the surface of the water will cause additional interest to the chub.

In addition, you can use cherries, cherries, canned corn, or even just bread crumbs as bait. But in this case, the effect may not be as strong as in the case of animal bait.

You should also not forget that when fishing for chub, the angler can receive a wonderful bonus in the form of large crucian carp, carp or bream. These fish are very often tempted by the bait that was originally intended for the chub. Yes, and they can be purposefully caught using tackle with a water-filled float on the same bread crust.

The chub can be called an ideal fisherman's trophy due to its beauty and strength. But a tackle with a water ball is the ideal weapon for conquering the perfect fish!

    Water-filled floats and sbirulino

I don’t know if it was worth putting it in a separate topic, it seems to me that not many people are interested in this. But I came across a water-filled fish tank about four years ago, bought it and had it for probably six months until I tried it while catching bleak on Selyava. The fish was quite large (for a bleak) and the tackle proved to be working. After quite successful catching of rudd, on Mukhavets near the san. Bug, and even large roach slipped through, tried to catch with this tackle on every fishing trip. Then quite a lot of information about sbirulino appeared in many Russian magazines. I saw a rather similar tackle in it, because v.p. You can also make it floating and neutral and sinking. By the way, having filled it completely with water, I caught a white bream on the M. Sea, I saw bites by the nod, and the tackle turned out to be slowly sinking, gliding to the bottom. I tried Sbirulino in Pripyat and, in general, it also showed itself not bad, plus you can use small turntables with it. Well, a fairly large size v.p. It’s quite good to use when catching pike in shallow water - a bubble floats in the water. However, then he was hooked to one ear with a carbine with a swivel. In general, the fishing is quite interesting. I even felt like a fly fisherman in some way (although I don’t think I’m old enough to fly fish yet, I’m afraid it’s like that) - after all, all the bites occur on the surface and in plain sight... and this is very beautiful...

    I love fishing with sbirulino.
I use mainly flies. I catch bleak, roach, rudd.
It’s also fun to catch bass with small wobblers and spinners.

Yes, the tackle is quite universal - you put a thin leash and a couple of maggots on a small hook and a kind of float tackle; on a leash there is a small spinner and it looks like a spinning rod; well, if instead of a leash there is a floating fly fishing line with a fly, then something similar to fly fishing is obtained, but still, probably this tackle has more of a float, as a child on the river, remember how you caught a bleak: you took a light float and without a sinker on the fly.... Although if you take sinking or neutral sbirulino, the tackle is already akin to a spinning rod, and the sbirulino already acts as a weight.... Thanks to Azyrynga for the idea, I’ll try it this season, by the way, I read somewhere about fishing for carp on top in hot weather....

I think the topic should be renamed, dividing it into two: “Fishing with sbirulino” and “Fishing with a liquid float” (or something like that). Although the bulk float itself is a type of float, maybe we shouldn’t create a separate topic?

I myself only fished with sbirulino when I had to cast the bait further away with a light spin. I haven’t caught a “non-predator” yet. The match will also go well. In any case, it is impossible to classify sbirulino as a float, because the bite is recorded not by the float, but by the rod.

What if you take a floating sbirulino and use it to cast a fly or bait? After all, the use of sbirulino is not limited only to the supply of small spinning bait... This is exactly the case here. plays the role of a float. And the question is how V.P. and S. to classify is quite controversial. After all, it is difficult to find the one who first came up with the idea of feeding bait using a transparent bubble or silicone... and to find out exactly how he wanted to use this tackle initially, it is also unrealistic now to find the one who was the first to use a spinning rod for casting donkey....

Interesting things are happening with carp and grass carp fishing at the top. In one reservoir, the cupid only takes it at the top, and even if you bring the bait under the carp’s nose, they completely ignore it. On the other it's the other way around. On the third one, no one wants to take anything from the top - only from the bottom. I still haven’t fully figured out the reasons. Does anyone have any experience? Share if you don't mind.

I would classify sbirulino as a spinning weight, and not as a float. Even in the case of a floating one, it is still not a float, since you detect a bite not by it, but by a floating bait, fishing line or the tip of the rod. So I vote for classifying this type of fishing as spinning. I’ve been fishing with sbirulino for the last couple of seasons almost half the time I spend spinning. I use slow-sinking options with flies for catching bleak, roach, and rudd. There were also experiments with perch and pike. And a friend of mine also caught crucian carp, albeit with maggots.
If I haven’t misunderstood anything, then the author of the article comes to the BRIKA forum. The border between spinning and fly fishing is erased... by a float! - . I would like to give him my word...

What does the fishing method have to do with it? You need to choose bait based on where, how and what kind of fish you catch with this gear and feed the bait accordingly.
You can feed on the bottom, on top, and in the water column. But to be honest, I don’t think that bait is often used when fishing with sbirulina. I won’t say anything about the bulk float, but it looks like it’s a float, so...

    WATER FLOAT

The water-filling float is designed for casting very light baits with using a spinning rod. It is actively used both for carp fishing and for any type of fishing. float rod.
The advantage of a water-filled float is that it performs two functions - as a sinker and as a float. Compared to a regular float, it is more visible and more convenient. The ATEMI float is made of high-quality shockproof and unbreakable plastic.

The shape is exactly the same as sbirulino, but you can adjust the weight yourself by adding or removing water, and the one who proves that they have different functions should be the first to throw a stone at me: D... When fishing with both vp and s. The bite can also be tracked visually (if you fish from above). One of the options for using sbirulino is precisely as a sinker. Let's create a topic "Lead sinker" and argue about what fishing method this topic relates to!

As a fishing method, sbirulino is a type of spinning rod , no matter what rods you use. If, for example, you cast a jig rod at a feeder, what does that mean? - jig spinning?
As an object, sbirulino maybe sbirulino(if used for its intended purpose), and float(if, for example, you cast using floating piece of loaf and wait for now it won’t show that the loaf has already been eaten and the fish is on the hook), and you can also pick your ears with this thing.
Sbirulino is a load. Spinning load. Allowing you to cast a very light bait at the required distance, and at the same time not dragging it (the bait) instantly to the bottom. It is difficult for an orthodox floater, who is accustomed to the fact that the load is meant to sink the bait (bait, nozzle) quickly, to imagine that the load can be both floating and slowly sinking, and one does not even want to understand why this is necessary.
Sbirulino is called a float by those who either have little idea what it is and what we are talking about, or those who do not want to go into explaining the essence of the issue, like “you don’t need it anyway.”
A water-filling float can also be either simply a large bite signaling float, or serve as a spinning sinker, i.e. used as sbirulino.

If floaters want to have a separate topic about how they use water-filled floats (and sirulino) in their fishing instead of more or less standard floats, then why not have such a topic in the “Float Fishing” section.
And if we talk about SBIRULINO, then we need a topic in the “Spinning” section. You can also create a separate section. (As, for example, we highlight “UL-Spinning”).

The float also, in some way, allows you to cast the bait. There are also submersible match floats, what do they belong to? I myself look at this from the position of a spinning player, since I devote most of my time in open water to spinning. Yes, before, before the meat grinders, from Nevskaya, in order to throw a light spinner or a miniature spinner, they put an olive of lead or a weight (it was called like that - spinning) But I believe that sbirulino should first be considered as a way of presenting bait, and the fact that it can act both as a load and as a float simply proves its versatility, because a doner who fishes with a feeder on a sinking sbirulino with a thin leash on a bunch of bloodworms or a couple of maggots remains a donator, and a spinning player who puts a sinking sbiru and twister on an offset machine and lets the whole thing go flow with a slow pull-up remains a spinning player......:102:

even in match fishing, where the float serves to deliver the equipment to the fishing point, the float is the main bite signal, and the presentation of the bait is carried out due to the weight on the fishing line. In addition (and this is the most important thing), in all types of float fishing everything is built around bait and bait, that is, part of float fishing is concentrating and controlling a school of fish. That is why bottom types of fishing, such as feeder and picker, are much closer to float fishing than sbirulino, despite the fact that sbirulino is a float (although I would say a floating sinker).

I agree, sbirulin is a free-willed hunter, something akin to a spinning rod, you have to look for fish all the time, and having found it, move as it wants, the flock leaves - you determine where and move after it, if you don’t clear it, you look for a new one. But I had a moment: after the rafting along Pripyat we went up the canal to the mikashi - we were waiting for a car from Minsk that was supposed to pick us up, and I took this opportunity to decide to catch bleak, and it was the size of a lake there. Selyavy (those who caught it know - like a young herring). I let a couple of crusts of the loaf go over the top, and threw the VP on the cauldron (by the way, instead of the VP I could have put a floating pickle) with maggots. In the hour and a half that we were waiting for the car, I caught two kilograms of bleak!!! So everything in this world is relative!:D

Why argue? If you wish, you can classify it as any type:
    For spinning - moving bait
To the float (the bombard looks like a float and sometimes floats too)
To the feeder (you can see the bite from the tip)
To fly fishing (you can catch all kinds of grasshoppers and other insects)
But, nevertheless, this is a separate type of fishing, completely independent.
And it’s better to fish with special rods (after all, we don’t fish for a match with feeder or spinning rods, although both are theoretically possible)

So we were arguing in which section to define this topic - it seems to be relevant to everyone, and at the same time it is a separate type of fishing, and you can catch almost any fish.....We need to try it in practice in the summer - collect spinning rods, floaters, fly fishers and federals, whoever catches the most with the sbira is the type of fishing: D: But seriously, then why argue? You need to share your experience and maybe then the floater will pick up a spinning rod, or the spinning angler will attach the sbira and a leash with maggots and begin to fish in the wiring. .... I used to also see interest in spinning alone, but I tried it - it’s possible (and interesting) to catch fish not only with a spinning rod, but before I was kind of skeptical about the float.. But I saw in Sburulino a tackle something similar to spinning rod and thanks to it I began to devote more time to the float or feeder. After all, sometimes the predator is completely silent - you remove the lure, hook it to the v.p. or collect it and catch the white one. Don’t swim ashore to drink tea:6: And being caught with a spinning stick (with a little dough) is no worse than with special rods....So, as one cat said, “GUYS, LET’S FISH FRIENDLY!!!”: wink:

On raubichs I caught bleak using sbirulina. It was very helpful when the bleak moved far away. True, the float is not water-filled. There are also water-filled ones in the arsenal, but I haven’t used them yet. Tried floating and neutral buoyancy. All are oblong. I made a couple of round bombades, and they are still in the chest. There is an idea for the season of fatty bleak to combine floating sbirulin with a spiral feeder of minimum capacity - wind wires along the rod of the float.. Otherwise, the bleak sometimes travels far, and there is nothing to add or feed there. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Of course you can also have perch. I'm talking about the features of a specific reservoir - Raubichi. There is a situation in the spring - a cruel OP, and the bleak splashes at the distant cordon and does not come closer by any means. So I tried sbirulina a couple of times - it helps. With a slingshot, you can’t really fire bleak bait. And if you do, then you need to definitely throw it there. But a small amount of bait directly on the float solves this problem, IMHO. I'll try it in the spring and report back.

In principle, if the bait has the consistency of plasticine, then you can simply stick it in a float or collect it and throw it, it should work according to the idea: 102:

In mid-summer, fishing in the surface and, to some extent, middle layers of water becomes relevant.

This is mainly due to the fact that when the butterflies begin to emerge from the nymphs, an excellent food supply for all types of fish is formed in the surface layer. The basis of this biomass is made up of all kinds of mayflies, the emergence of which this year was delayed only by the weather, or rather, constant rains.

Mayflies, one-day butterflies, are hunted not only by bleak, roach, rudd, chub or ide, but also by such “bottom-dwelling” fish as bream, crucian carp, carp and even tench.

Peaceful fish, which to some extent have lost discretion, become prey for perch, pike, large chubs and ides, and even catfish.

Surface fishing is now very relevant due not only to the emergence of mayflies, but also to the fact that in many reservoirs temperature stratification of water occurs, and crustaceans, as well as mosquitoes, dragonflies and small fish, especially fingerlings, spend most of the day in surface layers. And in the middle layers larger specimens of peaceful fish and almost all predators feed.

It makes sense to divide float rigs for fishing in surface layers of water into rigs for catching peaceful fish species and rigs for catching predators. Under a certain set of circumstances, rigs can be very similar, but, as a rule, the differences will be in individual structural elements, bait and wiring technique.

Float rigs for fishing in surface layers of water were historically created for catching predatory fish, but over time it turned out that the development of fishing methods and the production of specialized gear led to the fact that now surface rigs are used more often when catching peaceful fish. Maybe with a change in fashion there will be a reverse reorientation, but not now.

It is convenient to divide rigs for catching peaceful fish in the surface layers of water into classic ones, which have received the stable name “stick”, rigs with loaded floats, rigs with “filler” floats, and also rigs with alloy floats.

Rigs with glued floats have already been discussed a little earlier.

Rigs with loaded floats are formally completely similar to match rigs with “waggler” type floats, but there are differences.

The fact is that fishing in surface layers of water is most acceptable at a distance within twenty meters from the shore, and even in fairly calm, one might say, calm weather. Therefore, equipment designed for fishing from ultra-long distances is simply not needed. This fact determines the differences in design.

Equipment for fishing from the surface is much lighter and their weight rarely exceeds 5-6 g.

The weight of the equipment is determined solely by the required casting distance. As practice shows, in order to accurately cast twenty meters in the absence of wind, it is enough to use equipment with a “waggler” float weighing 3-5 g.

Here, floats that have replaceable weights in the keel are not required. The reason is that to cast a rig on a 0.14 mm line over a distance of twenty meters, it is enough that the mass of the rig is 2.5-3 g. Therefore, the load consists of only two or three sinkers. A float with minimal internal loading does not frighten cautious fish, since it does not dive after falling.

When choosing a float, you need to remember that the most inconspicuous ones will be transparent floats and floats painted silver.

The distribution of weights on the rig (the descent is only 30-100 cm) should be as simple as possible. In most cases, it is advisable to concentrate all the sinkers 50-150 cm from the hook, or even better under the float itself. Concentrating the sinkers near the float will allow you to accurately perform the most effective retrieve - dropping the bait. That is, after casting, you pull the equipment a meter so that the bait rises to the surface. Then you pause, during which the bait falls at a natural speed. It is during the fall that you should expect a bite.

It must be said that using lightweight wagglers requires a fairly high-quality rod and reel. If there are none, then instead of a waggler it makes sense to use a water-filled transparent ball float. It flies well and far, does not scare away fish with its appearance, is quite controllable, but is not sensitive enough to bites. Therefore, rigs with such floats are more suitable for catching predators with bulky baits, for example, chub and ide on the cockchafer. Therefore, when fishing in very strong currents for fish such as chub, asp or ide for beetles, fry and worms, it makes sense to have water-filled ball floats in your arsenal. No weight is required in equipment with such floats, since the weight is contained in the body of the float in the form of water.

The fishing technique is quite simple and consists in the fact that the equipment is sent obviously further than the expected bite point. The fall of a fairly heavy float is almost always alarming if it does not scare away the fish, so after casting the equipment is pulled very slowly to the fishing point.

When catching crucian carp, bream and roach, which are located near the surface of the water, you even have to remake the equipment into a different design. The float is attached to the end of the fishing line, and the hook is on the leash closer to the rod. Most often, such equipment is used when fishing for grasshoppers, horseflies, and beetles, which float on the surface and are clearly visible. Of the sinking baits, it makes sense to use only white maggots, which are at least somehow visible through the water.

The fourth, little discussed in the literature, is equipment with a float, which is often difficult to designate as a float. This equipment is designed for swimming fishing.

The float in a classic rig performs the following functions: holds the rig, helps cast the rig at a given distance, carries the rig along the current or along the wave, and signals a bite. So, in a rig for floating fishing, the float only holds the bait on the hook at the selected fishing horizon and signals a bite.

The equipment for this fishing technique consists of a fishing line, a hook and a float. Very rarely a sinker is used in this rig. This fishing technique is used exclusively when fishing in the current, on small rivers or channels, as well as when fishing on large rivers in the early morning and evening hours. That is, the fishing distance is such that there is no need to cast the equipment at a distance greater than the length of the rod.

As a float, you can even use an ordinary match or a piece of cork, or a dry tree branch no more than 2-3 cm long. The cunning Japanese have been making special ball floats with a diameter of about 4 mm from hard wood for a long time (about forty years). The fishing line is passed through the through hole of the ball and plugged with a bamboo toothpick. A rig with such a float can be placed under bushes hanging over the water, and between the stems of aquatic plants. This minimizes the size of the float, which is no longer able to alert the fish. At the same time, very high controllability of the equipment and ultra-high sensitivity to bites are achieved.

Summing up a brief, I would say, schematic examination of equipment for catching peaceful fish in the surface layers of water at a certain time of the year, I would like to focus the attention of anglers not on the design of equipment and the choice of time and place of fishing, but on fishing technique.

The thing is that fishing in the surface layers of water is difficult for one single reason. Collecting food from the surface, for example, for bream is an exceptional and very short-term phenomenon. Well, for example, what is the collection of honey mushrooms like for us?

Therefore, fish looking for food not on “their” water horizon are as wary as possible, and the key to success is the correct presentation of bait to the fish.

Therefore, firstly, maximum camouflage during fishing. Secondly, if heavy equipment is used, then it must be thrown behind the fish feeding point, at least ten meters, so that the falling equipment does not frighten the fish. Thirdly, all manipulations with equipment in the fishing area should be as smooth as possible and such that the bait moves naturally. To do this, it is advisable to wait for half a minute after casting the rig, then very slowly pull up the rig and wait until the falling bait reaches the “working” depth. Next, you need to methodically repeat this wiring technique. Using relatively light suspending baits such as maggots, bread or bloodworms as bait will greatly facilitate effective retrieves.

And the last thing I would like to draw special attention to. If the rig uses a leash made of a thinner fishing line, then instead of a grappling line it is much better to use not a pellet, but the smallest swivel. When twitching the rig, especially if the bait is voluminous, the swivel will at least somehow protect the leash from twisting and further tangling.

Today’s article is not about a simple float, but a water-filled one. This tackle is actively used when fishing for perch, it performs well and is recommended. The principle of operation is simple, you just need to understand the basics and a big catch is guaranteed. Many fishermen have not heard of it, but this tackle is excellent for fishing both predatory and cautious white fish. If you have never heard of it, then be sure to read the article, in the future you will provide yourself with a lot of fish.

Simple and cheap tackle, universal, every fisherman should have. It's called a water-filling float. As the name suggests, this is a container filled with liquid, which has the same antenna as everyone is familiar with.

It is used most often when catching large and cautious fish. Its advantage over other gear is that it is less noticeable on the water surface for fish, including perch. Due to the physical characteristics of the water, it looks like an unexploded water bubble, which is familiar to aquatic inhabitants. That is why the sphere into which water is poured is most often made of transparent or blue (natural color) plastic.

Liquid tackle is most often used when fishing in the current, where foam and water bubbles form - in such a place it practically becomes part of the river and does not frighten large perch.

Equipping a fishing rod with a liquid float

Looking at the photo of the device of this gear, it becomes clear that there is nothing complicated about it. There are several design options, not counting homemade ones, but in design they are all approximately the same. The main fishing line is attached to the top, and a swivel with a thin leash and a hook at the end is attached to the bottom.

It is worth mentioning that the main line can pass through the upper ring and be wound into the lower swivel, where the float will slide along the line. In this case, stopper knots and beads are placed below and above the main line (they prevent the knot from breaking when casting) to limit its movement. In the first version of the rig, a non-sliding version is made, because the main scaffold is tightly tied to the upper ring. And a separate piece of thin fishing line (leash), for example made of fluorocarbon, is mounted to the lower swivel.

This method can be used to catch not only fish, but also other white fish: roach, rudd, chub, bleak. The length of the leash should be selected depending on the location, depth and fishing conditions. More often its length is from 20 cm -1.5 m. The main advantage is its versatility. With one tackle you can achieve different weights by adjusting the volume of water poured, which is undoubtedly a plus. Read the article about, in it you will find a lot of useful and interesting information.

In windy conditions or on long casts, fill it more, increasing the weight. This way you can fish in weather when a simple float would be constantly blown away by the wind. When fishing in the current during the retrieve, all you have to do is lower the tackle into the water and gradually release (unwind) the line. Thus, the perch will believe that the insect (maggot, bloodworm, worm) is being carried away by the current, and without sensing a catch, it will boldly take the bait.

Wobblers that catch 100%:

The bulb (also known as a water-filled float) perfectly conveys all the touches of the fish of your bait. After the slightest bite, he immediately passes it to the fisherman, leaving circles on the water. Such tackle is able to convey even the slightest, neat bite of any white fish.

By equipping the hook not with animal bait, but with a wobbler or, you will get a catchy tackle for a neat asp, chub or even trout. Feel free to equip your fishing rods with this type of float and try yourself in new fishing methods.

With the constant growth of people's interest in fishing, more and more new devices and gear are appearing, which significantly increase the efficiency and effectiveness of fishing. Today we’ll talk about one of these devices. This is a piece of equipment called a water-filling float.

What is a water-filling float

This universal device is a plastic spherical container approximately 3.5 cm in diameter. It is often used to throw light weight baits. And the weight of the sphere itself depends on how much water is taken into it. Such floats, as a rule, maintain balance, staying afloat and not diving deep into the water, therefore, in order to place the bait at a certain depth in the water column, it will be necessary to additionally load the float. Many fishermen rightly believe that such a water-filled float, due to its appearance, resembles an air bubble to the fish and therefore scares it much less than conventional gear. Perhaps this is why the color of such products is usually close to natural, or they are completely colorless. There are usually two ears located on the sides of the plastic container, while the float itself has two through holes, which must be closed with rubber plugs. Of particular interest to fishermen is the use of a water-filled float specifically for casting over long distances and for fishing with wires. Therefore, you should immediately install a spinning reel, but also good fishing results with a fishing line attached to the very tip of the rod.

How to equip a fishing rod with a water-filled float

How to rig a fishing rod with this water-filled float? This is done quite simply.

To begin with, the main fishing line is attached to one eye. You can tie it in the usual way for you, but it would be more practical to use a carabiner for fastening, but before that you will need to check whether it is possible to thread the carabiner arc into the eye of the body. If everything works out, then you can attach the spherical body itself to the carbine. This mounting option is very convenient if during your fishing you plan to fish all the bottom layers. You can quickly switch from a float to your other preferred floats or baits.

Next, you need to attach a leash to the second ear. A suitable way to do this is "loop to loop". The leash should not be too thick, since the objects of fishing with this tackle will be perch, bleak, rudd, chub, sabrefish, roach, etc. The fishing line should be 0.14-0.19 and length from 45 to 150 cm.

You should lightly load it closer to the hook with lead balls weighing a couple of grams. By using several of these weights, you can achieve a more even distribution of the load along the leash. “Gulp” type hooks are perfect for this type of gear. But this is a matter of taste, experience and preference.

How to catch

The process of fishing with such a float will not differ much from regular fishing, with the exception of one action. Before throwing bait into a pond in anticipation of a fish bite, it is better to first fill the float with water. To do this, you need to open both rubber plugs and immerse the plastic container under water. After the float is filled, you need to tightly close it with plugs so that they do not fall out during fishing and so that the tackle or main line does not cling to them. How much water is poured into the sphere will determine its weight and, accordingly, the distance over which it can be thrown. When the tackle hits the water, you will hear a noisy splash, which may scare away timid fish, but it will most likely attract a bleak. It is logical that the more water in the float’s capacity, the more it will sink into the water. Consequently, the windage will be reduced, which in windy weather will give a greater advantage than if you used an empty sphere. If you are fishing on a river, then the current itself will carry the bait, and you will only have to slowly let go of the line. On the lake you can periodically wind the line, and in case of light wind the effect will be the same as on the river.

Despite the apparent roughness of the bulb, which is filled with water, the float transmits bites very well. When the fish touches the leader, noticeable circles appear on the water, from which, with experience, you can determine the size of the fish and interest in the bait.

DIY water-filling float

If you want to try out this universal tackle, but there are no water-filled floats in the nearest store or you simply don’t want to spend money, then you can easily make such floats with your own hands. To do this, we will need a yellow box from a children's Kinder Surprise or any other plastic container of a spherical or elongated shape, a plastic Chupa Chups straw or a ballpoint pen refill and a round lead weight.

Using a lighter, you need to melt one end of the plastic rod so that a rim is formed, and punch holes in the center at both ends of the container with a diameter slightly less than the thickness of our tube. We flatten the lead spherical weight a little and drill it in the center so that a rod can be threaded through it. Next, we put half of the container on this rod, and then a lead ball and move it all to the rim on the tube. We put on the second half of the plastic container and melt the other end of the rod over the fire. That's all. All that remains is to adapt it all into the general gear, as described above.

Home > Fishing techniques > Features of fishing with a water-filled float

Today I want to tell you about a rare, but truly universal tackle called a water-filling float. It looks like a plastic sphere, approximately 3.5 cm in diameter. There is an opinion that, under the surface tension film, such a float reminds the fish of an ordinary air bubble and therefore does not frighten it as much as ordinary gear. Perhaps, to make it look more like a bubble, the color of such products is most often completely transparent or light blue. There are two ears on the sides of the sphere, and in the float itself there are two holes closed with rubber plugs.

It is more interesting to use a water-filled float for long-distance casting and for fishing with wires. Therefore, we immediately focus on a spinning reel, although fishing with a rigid line fastening at the end of the rod is also possible.

Equipping your fishing rod with a water-filled float is quite simple. We hook the main line to one eye. You can simply tie it, but I like to put a carabiner on the main line (you must first check whether you can insert the arc of the carabiner into the eye of the float), and then fasten the sphere to the carabiner. This is very convenient if during fishing you want to fish the bottom layers. You can quickly switch to a jig head or a Tyrolean stick. A leash is attached to the second eye. I prefer the loop-to-loop method. Objects of our fishing: bleak, perch, rudd, roach, sabrefish, chub, etc. Therefore, the leash needs to be thin and gentle. Line 0.14-0.18. Length from 40 cm to 1.5 m. Closer to the hook, the load is in the form of a pellet of 2-3 grams. If desired, you can distribute the load more evenly along the leash by using a couple of pellets. I like to set very tiny hooks called gag hooks. You can choose to your taste, but try to ensure that the tackle comes out harmonious.

And now comes the interesting part. Having put a worm or other bait on the hook, you can already cast it in search of a trophy. But it’s better to fill our float first. Open both rubber plugs and lower the plastic sphere completely under water. For the characteristic gurgling sound that we hear when filling, a water-filling float is also popularly called a bulba or gurgle. Don’t forget to close the caps tightly after filling. Otherwise, when casting, the main line and leader may overlap.

In many ways, the behavior of the bulb depends on the amount of water collected. His weight changes. Accordingly, the casting distance increases. Also, when splashing down the gear, you will hear a loud sound, which can frighten cautious fish. It only attracts bleak. I would like to note that the more the float is filled, the more it is immersed in water. Accordingly, the windage decreases and in windy weather it will be much less blown away than an empty bulb. On the river, the current itself carries the tackle with bait, your task is only to release the fishing line little by little. On the lake, instead of a current, a light breeze will help. You can also do the wiring yourself, periodically reeling in the fishing line. Sometimes this method is very effective. For example, if the object of the hunt is a small fish. Often she eats maggots so skillfully that from the outside it is completely unnoticeable. By periodically supporting the tackle, you will be able to detect this cunning one at the moment of its quiet cheating.

With the apparent roughness of the bulb, in particular, heavily filled with water, this float transmits bites very well. At the slightest touch of the fish to the leash, circles begin to disperse in the water. With experience, you will learn to recognize even the slightest fish interest in your bait.

And finally, I’ll tell you another interesting secret of this universal tackle. You don’t have to wrap the leash, but instead of a hook you can tie a fly, the kind that is used in fly fishing. Or, a very small wobbler. And your wonderful trout tackle is ready. Go for the trophies.

Rods and tackle work

You can begin successful fishing using a water-filled float in the spring after the water warms up, when, with the appearance of insects, fish rise to the surface in search of food. Such fishing ends after the arrival of autumn cold weather. Typical trophies of such a rig are bleaks, rudd, roaches, chubs, and less commonly roach, silver bream, carp, and crucian carp. However, surprises can also be expected when an underwater inhabitant such as a white bream, which is atypical for horseback fishing, is on the hook. This happens more often on rivers.

I don’t rule out good performance of a water-filled float with a fly rod rig, but it has its drawbacks. In particular, it is impossible to make long casts, and this is often necessary due to the fish being located at a considerable distance from the shore. For example, large lake bleak prefers the distant horizon, and on overgrown lakes at a great distance from the shore you can find boiling cauldrons of rudd.

Water-filling float-ball

For float fishing for fish that live in the upper layers of water, an excellent bite indicator is a rig with a water-filled ball float.

Having adopted the idea of their ancestors, who invented the water-filled ball float, today they produce various types of water-filled floats, even match ones. However, there is little real benefit from them; rather, they are a product for the sake of a product, while a ball float filled with water is a really smart invention.

Unlike a conventional float, a water-filled ball-shaped bite alarm is a spherical container made of transparent plastic that is filled with water. Due to this, the weight and stability of the float increase, allowing you to successfully fish over impressive distances. However, this model can be used without filling it with water. The casting distance will be reduced, but it will make less noise when landing. In addition, its resistance to bites will decrease, and then when the equipment is subsequently reeled out of the water. A sinker in tandem with such a float is not used. A leash with a length of 40 to 100 cm - depending on the fishing conditions. The hook is invariably small in size.

Such a float has several advantages. It scares fish that live in the upper layers of reservoirs less, since it is similar in appearance to a bubble that regularly appears on the water due to natural phenomena. Pisces do not perceive it as a foreign object and therefore do not feel the trick. In addition, when splashing down, the water-filling float makes a noise similar to what the fish itself usually makes during the period of active feeding. The impressive external dimensions allow the fisherman himself to easily see such a signaling device.

Another important detail is the ability to carry out successful fishing even without the use of complementary foods. In the warm season, especially in summer when water blooms and fish activity decreases, this is important. They can ignore stationary baits, but moving ones can arouse their interest. Moreover, after biting, the fish does not feel much resistance, since the equipment does not have a load, as mentioned above.

When using a water-filling float, the abandoned bait slowly and smoothly sinks into the water, giving the fish the illusion of regular food falling. In this case, the immersion trajectory of the bait is not strictly vertical, but occurs along an arc caused by the presence of a leash, which in practice encourages fish to grab.

Bubble designs

In the factory version, the water-filling float is a composite container with two ears. The end of the main line is tied to one of them, and the leash to the second. For filling with water and venting air, the alarm has two holes, which, after completing the procedure, are plugged with soft plastic plugs. However, despite the modern design, I am more impressed by the float, which I make myself from an ordinary roll-on deodorant and a pen refill. There are several reasons for this. The first is that it has a matte color, and after it gets into the water, the float looks transparent. Excellent camouflage. The second is more weight with a small size. The third is high strength. The fourth is the ability to pass the fishing line through the body without unnecessary knots, which improves the balance and strength of the equipment. And fifth, such a float does not have line overlaps, since there is simply nothing for it to cling to, which cannot be said about the factory design.

Making a water-filling float from a deodorant ball is as easy as pie. Initially, it is possible to select “raw materials” of the required size. I know of three balls of different diameters used in deodorants, and I consider the smallest one to be the most popular, because its size corresponds to the size of real bubbles appearing in water. At the same time, its own weight, coupled with the sphere filled up to half with water, makes it possible to fish the coastal zone without effort. Larger balls are good for casting over long distances, especially in poor visibility conditions.

I remove the ball from the used bottle and wash it well to remove the smell. I make a through hole with an awl comparable in size to the rod, since with this option it will subsequently narrow and press tightly. The factory mark at the junction of the two hemispheres of the ball helps to symmetrically punch a hole.

I first melt one end of the rod with a lighter and flatten the end on a flat surface to form a hat. Subsequently, I restore the slightly swollen hole by turning it with the tip of a knife. Having inserted the rod into the hole until it touches the cap, I cut off the opposite part with a knife, leaving the end a few millimeters long. I cut this end into a cone, so that later it will be convenient to insert and remove the tube when filling the sphere with water. As a result, the tube simultaneously serves as both a float plug and a channel for passing the fishing line. The water-filled bite alarm is ready; the whole job takes no more than 5 minutes.

To fill the ball with water, simply pull out the tube and lower the sphere into the water. Having collected the required amount of liquid, I close the holes again with a rod-tube. Considering that during fishing such an operation sometimes has to be performed repeatedly, increasing or decreasing the amount of water inside the ball, I do not make blind equipment. After passing the fishing line through the ball float, I limit its movement along the fishing line on both sides with silicone stoppers. He lifted the top stopper, poured in water and again moved the stopper towards the ball. In addition, the lower stopper also acts as a bump stop, since I tie a small swivel to the fishing line and attach the leash to it.

This design additionally allows the equipment to be used as a sliding one, for which it is enough to move the upper stopper along the line. However, judging by my practice, this only makes sense when fishing with a short cast, when there is good visual control of both the float and the line. If the bite is weak, it is better to experiment with the length and thickness of leashes, baits, etc.

Rods and tackle work

You can begin successful fishing using a water-filled float in the spring after the water warms up, when, with the appearance of insects, fish rise to the surface in search of food. Such fishing ends after the arrival of autumn cold weather. Typical trophies of such equipment are bleaks, rudd, roaches, chubs, less often roach, silver bream, carp, crucian carp. However, surprises can also be expected when an underwater inhabitant such as a white bream, which is atypical for horseback fishing, is on the hook. This happens more often on rivers.

But the advantage of equipment with a water-filled float is not only the ability to conduct a targeted hunt for riding fish. This equipment allows you to quickly catch live bait without requiring you to take care of it in advance. Right on a pike spot, you can easily catch several bleaks without any significant time investment and then use them as bait for spotted predators. Or, after unsuccessfully catching predators with a spinning rod, quickly rebuild the equipment and catch, albeit not large, but still fish. Baits for such fishing can be prepared in advance or found near a water body. There are plenty of bugs, grasshoppers and other insects. As a result, you will be able to take your soul away and return home with the catch.

Any spinning rod is perfect for working with water-filling equipment, but taking into account its lightness, light will be a priority. A braided cord wound on a reel spool, especially if it is thin (0.06, -0.10 mm), works no worse than monofilament. To prevent it from sinking, you can use a special gel. For this option, a pre-made tackle from a half-meter piece of fishing line with a water-filled float, stoppers, a swivel and a leash will not be superfluous. On a pond, all that remains is to connect it with a braided cord, repurposing the spinning rod.

But this is all for an emergency, when you don’t have a profile rod at hand, which I prefer to have in my arsenal for light-weight rigs. It is a lightweight Bologna-type fishing rod with guides 3.6–4 m long. I equip it with a miniature spinning reel or an inertial “Luck” type (A-Elita). In both cases, monofilament with a cross section of 0.12–0.14 mm as the main one and 0.08–0.10 mm as the leader is suitable for winding on them. It is even better to use fluorocarbon fishing line as both the main and the leader, because due to the refractive index of light close to the medium, it is invisible in the water. In addition, it does not rub off on stones, cattails and reeds, where fishing most often takes place; does not lose its qualities in the sun. Well, it practically does not stretch, which allows you to perform high-quality hooks when fishing at an impressive distance from the shore.

In order to make casting easier, it is better to position yourself on the windward side. Then the wind blowing from the back will contribute to an accurate throw. The pond itself will tell you where to throw it. There are many promising landmarks. First of all, this is aquatic vegetation, snags and boulders protruding from the water, floating islands, etc. In clear water, the border of the near edge, visible to a trained eye, water areas near riffles, micropools, etc., are attractive. When the fishing range is impressive, and vision does not allow one to clearly distinguish bites , the float can be painted in a bright color, say red or yellow.

In difficult conditions with an increased risk of snagging, it is useful to clip the line or slow it down with your finger after casting, but before the float splashes down. To me, the second option seems more rational, since fishing is associated with constant movements: there is no fishing in one sector, and water areas of different distances are fished from each place on the shore.

Even a far-abandoned water-filling float is clearly visible from afar against the background of the water and therefore there is no difficulty in controlling the bite. When this happens, the ball begins to dance on the water, forming circles. Then it gradually moves to the side, signaling the need to perform a short but sharp hook. If a fish is spotted, I fish it out; if not, I act depending on the bait. When there is a shitfish or other delicate larva on the hook, a recast is required, because the bait on the hook will be nothing but scraps. When there is maggot, you can take your time and let the bait stay in the water for some more time. Even when sucked, it can attract the attention of fish. However, regardless of the bait, you should follow the rule of bringing the hook tip out. This will not negatively affect the number of bites, but their quality will definitely increase.

A water-filled float involves active fishing, so after casting and no bites, it is useful to set the equipment in motion, making smooth pulls that wind the bait on the hook, forcing it to rise and float in the water again. During these periods, the probability of bites increases significantly.

A water-filled float is also suitable for fishing on top of a wire. Possessing stability and weight, it moves well along the river stream, carrying the line from the reel with it.

There is a practice of installing a second leash on a rig with a water-filling float. Usually it is made much shorter than the first one so that it gets less confused. It is either attached to the same eye of the swivel as the long leash, or installed higher in the form of a branch. The advantage of this design is that it is possible to quickly identify the coolest bait, and during the feeding period of the same bleak or rudd, catch two fish at a time. I believe that such an improvement will be of little use, since the equipment will inevitably get confused, forcing you to waste time putting it in order. In addition, several individuals caught while fishing at the same time are unlikely to be worth several dozen blurred hooks due to parallel twitching of the baits. It is better to use one leash. Pleasure comes first, fish is secondary!
