Phu Quoc Airport (Vietnam)

The name of Phu Quoc airport sounds a little strange to a Russian-speaking tourist - Duong Dong, after the name of the town next to which it is located. The international name in English is Phu Quoc International Airport. It is not a very large airport with one runway and one passenger terminal. However, it is capable of receiving and sending 7 million passengers.

Now Duong Dong is a modern air harbor. The Phu Quoc airport online board will help you track your desired flight in real time. And it began its history almost 90 years ago, in 1930. The construction was organized by the French colonialists, who then dominated the territory of modern Vietnam. Later, during the Vietnam War, in the 60-70s of the last century, the airport was actively used for combat missions.

In the 90s, the tourism business began to develop in Phu Quoc, as throughout Vietnam. And the island's airport began to be rebuilt. First, the runway was extended from 1 km to 1.5 km so that it could be used for large airbuses. Later, the strip was further increased to 3 km, and a modern terminal was built for the convenience of passengers. The final renovation was completed most recently in 2012. And now tourists from all over the world arrive at the modern Fukuoka Airport!

The burgeoning trade on the island of Phu Quoc led to the need to build an airport, which was carried out by the French in 1930. It was small, consisting of a one-story building and a runway 996 m long.

During the Vietnam War, the Americans used the airport. Phu Quoc as a military air base. The island itself was actually turned into a prison for Vietnamese prisoners of war. According to some estimates, there were 40 thousand of them there.

The growth of Vietnam's economy and the development of trade on the island led to the need to increase the airport's runway to 1,496 m. Another important milestone in development was its significant strengthening in 1993. At the same time, a 148.5 m long taxiway was built and an area of 120x60 m was added for aircraft parking.

Reconstruction continued in 1995. The new building of the airport's main passenger terminal was put into operation.

The tourism boom that hit the island after the adoption of a government program to support tourism had a positive impact on the history of the airport. A grandiose reconstruction was carried out, which was completed in 2012.

The amount spent on the latest reconstruction amounted to more than $970 million. A new runway has been put into operation, capable of receiving middle-class passenger airliners Airbus A350, Boeing 747. Its size is 3000x50 m. The airport with all its infrastructure occupies an area of 8 square meters. km. Its capacity is more than 7 million passengers per year. In addition to the fare, you will also need to pay a kind of airport tax in the amount of 20,000 dong. The driver can charge you this amount immediately or after the end of the trip. So don't think that the taxi driver is trying to scam you by asking for an additional 20,000 VND.

To Duong Dong city - 160,000-180,000 dong

What to do if your flight is canceled

If a flight is canceled more than 24 hours before departure, passengers will be transferred to similar airline flights. The costs are borne by the carrier; the service is free for the passenger. If you are not satisfied with any of the options offered by the airline, most airlines can issue an “involuntary return.” Once confirmed by the airline, the money will be returned to your account. Sometimes this can take several weeks.

How to check in at the airport

Online check-in is available on most airline websites. Most often it opens 23 hours before the start of the flight. You can go through it no later than 1 hour before the plane departs.

To check in at the airport you will need:

    • identification document specified in the order,
    • birth certificate when flying with children,
    • printed itinerary receipt (optional).
  • What can you take on a plane?

Carry-on baggage is the items you will take with you onto the plane. The weight limit for hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg, and its size most often should not exceed the sum of three dimensions (length, width and height) from 115 to 203 cm (depending on the airline). A handbag is not considered hand luggage and is carried freely.

The bag you take with you on the plane should not contain knives, scissors, medicines, aerosols, or cosmetics. Alcohol from duty free stores can only be transported in sealed bags.

How to pay for luggage at the airport

If the weight of luggage exceeds the standards established by the airline (most often 20-23 kg), you need to pay for each kilogram of excess. In addition, many Russian and foreign airlines, as well as low-cost airlines, have tariffs that do not include free baggage allowance and must be paid separately as an additional service.

In this case, luggage must be checked in at the airport at a separate Drop-off check-in counter. If you are unable to print your boarding pass, you can obtain one at the airline's regular check-in counter, and check-in and check-in your luggage there.

Where to find out the arrival time if you are a greeter

You can find out the plane's arrival time on the airport's online board. The Tutu.ru website has an online display of the main Russian and foreign airports.
