Those who are tired of noisy beaches, swam in the sea and decided to take a break from the water parks and dolphinariums of Crimea should plunge into silence and listen to birdsong in a cozy corner of nature near Mountain Lake Kastel, 8 km from Alushta. It reflects the pine trees and tall cliffs of Mount Paragilmen, at the foot of which this reservoir is located. Its shore is overgrown with exotic herbs and shrubs that are not found anywhere else.

Where is it located and what is interesting

Lake Kastel is located in the Alushta urban district, next to the small village of Vinogradny, across the Yuzhnoberezhnoe highway.

Scientists believe that the picturesque reservoir, which is located at an altitude of over half a kilometer, appeared after the melting of glaciers. In winter it freezes, but already in February the first flowers appear in the surrounding area.

Huge boulders are scattered right off the coast. How they got here, no one knows. The age of these stone blocks exceeds tens of thousands of years. Numerous underground springs fill Lake Kastel with the purest water of a turquoise hue. Its smooth surface resembles a mirror.

Scattered among the forest are clearings where berries and herbs grow, the unique composition of which is used to treat diseases. Here they collect various types of mushrooms and enjoy the honey of wild bees.

Going for a walk around the surrounding area, you can come across an abandoned peach orchard, drink water from springs, and walk along the river that flows into Kastel. There are very few such unique corners with unique landscapes left in Crimea. For those who adore silence and solitude, it is difficult to find a better place.

The legend about the fortress and its owner Theodora - Queen of Sugdea

It should not be surprising that the name of the lake is translated as castle. In the Middle Ages, a defensive structure actually rose on the mountain, according to legend with an underground passage. Perhaps there was more than one underground passage in the fortress. Archaeologists tried to find where this defensive structure, which had a complex structure, was located. So far they have not succeeded. Placers of stones are scattered along the entire road, which leads to a lake with fresh water.

Only legends remain from the fortress. They say that many centuries ago the Queen of Sugdea lived in it, who had amazing beauty and intelligence. Quite a few leaders wooed Theodora - that was her name. Some brought her expensive gifts, others promised her eternal youth, others - a princely title. However, the woman did not want to depend on anyone, she did not intend to get married, since she decided to devote her whole life to her people and kingdom. From the castle, which was built on a rock, the beauty watched as caravans with goods walked towards Sugdeya. Linens, spices, furs, and carpets were brought here.

But soon the Tatar hordes began to approach the kingdom. Yes, and the Genoese, who were located in the Cafe, were also preparing for war with Sugdea. As a child, Theodora was raised with the prince's sons, who were twins. One of them, Irakli, invited the girl to become his wife. But she refused, and the young man harbored a grudge and decided to take possession of Theodora, destroy his brother and the kingdom. To do this, Heraclius convinced the Genoese to go to war against Sugdea.

The battle lasted for months until the traitor entered the fortress by cunning. He killed his brother, shouted that he would save Theodora, but the queen cut off Heraclius’s head with a sword. On Mount Castel, together with the residents, the beauty entered into an unequal battle. Her body was covered with wounds, the woman fought until the last minute with enemies who were afraid of the black-eyed beauty, even when bleeding.
