However, if the hook is caught not in the soft tissues of the mouth, but in the tendon area, releasing the hook will be problematic, since it is difficult to squeeze the spiral between the shank of the hook and the tendon tissue

Fork extractor- the working part of the device is made in the form of a two-pronged fork. This is the simplest design. Effectively frees the hook from the hook, but only on the condition that its shank and bend are clearly visible in the fish’s mouth. Their working parts have fairly sharp edges and can easily cut the thin lead of the equipment. The best materials for extractors are plastic and hardwood.

How to use the extractor

So, you have a problem while fishing! The “cheeky” goby swallowed the baited hook so deeply that it was not visually visible in the fish’s mouth. A medical clamp and narrow-nose pliers cannot be used. In such a situation, only an extractor can help out.

To remove the hook using this device, you must perform the following steps in sequence:

Hold the caught fish with one hand: the mouth of the fish is open, the leash line is in a taut position;
With your other hand, grab the extractor. Install a fishing line going deep into the fish’s mouth into the section of the working part of the device;
Controlling the position of the tensioned fishing line in the cut, smoothly begin to insert the extractor along the fishing line into the mouth of the fish until it rests on the bend (hook) of the hook;
By briefly pressing firmly on the bend (prying) of the hook, release it from the hook in the fish’s mouth;
While holding the line taut, remove the extractor and hook from the fish's mouth.

Let’s imagine the situation again: you are fishing, you come across a “impudent” bull that has swallowed the hook deep into its throat, and you do not have a device for removing hooks with you. Do not despair! Cut a thin branch 3–4 mm thick from the tree. Clear it of knots and bark and make it as smooth as possible. You have a thin wooden stick. Using a knife, shape one end of the stick into a screwdriver shape with a cone-shaped cut in the middle. You have made the simplest extractor for fishing with your own hands in field conditions. Use it as described in paragraphs. 1–5.

It was already mentioned above that extractors made of metal should be avoided. The best material would be plastic or hardwood. Take advantage of commercially available ready-made blanks - in handicraft stores you can always find knitting needles of various diameters, made of plastic or wood. These are very convenient blanks for the extractor, since the spokes already have a spherical or flat thickening at one end, and their material is easy to process. The diameter and length of the workpiece for the future device should be selected taking into account the size of the fish being caught.

You can also use the following as a blank for making an extractor:

toothbrush handle. As a rule, handles are made of plastic and are quite easy to process;
chopsticks used as cutlery in East Asia. Sticks are made from various materials: hardwood, plastic, various metals. All of them can be used as blanks for making an extractor with your own hands.
