Traveling with Maria Anashina A walk through Pavlovsky Park

I think I won’t be mistaken if I say that Pavlovsky Park can be called one of the most beautiful not only in Russia, but throughout the world. Regular and landscape parts, pavilions and sculptures, the picturesque Slavyanka River and numerous ponds, bridges and baths harmoniously coexist here. It is impossible to explore it in one day. This time I wandered around the park for several days, took photographs, and enjoyed the scenery. And then, a significant part, alas, turned out to be unreached.

It is difficult to talk about all the attractions of Pavlovsk Park in one post. Therefore, for convenience, I will divide my story into several parts. And today - an introductory part, a brief introduction to the park.

The history of the creation of Pavlovsk Park

Pavlovsk was given by Empress Catherine II to her son, Tsarevich Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Feodorovna in 1777. And soon construction begins here summer residence the Grand Duke and his wife, and after Paul's accession to the throne in 1796, Pavlovsk became the imperial residence. After his death in 1801, Pavlovsk passed to the Dowager Empress, Maria Feodorovna. After her death in 1828, Pavlovsk was inherited in the Romanov family, and after the 1917 revolution it was converted into a museum. Great damage was caused to Pavlovsk in general and to the Pavlovsk park and palace in particular during the Great Patriotic War. After the victory, the Pavlovsk Museum-Reserve was restored thanks to the activities of director Anna Ivanovna Zelenova.

The most famous architects of the 18th and early 19th centuries took part in the creation of Pavlovsk Park: C. Cameron, V. Brenna, A. Voronikhin, J. Quarenghi, J. Thomas de Thomon, C. Rossi... A grandiose palace was created on an area of about 600 hectares -park ensemble.

Pavlovsk Park consists of seven landscape areas:
◾Big star,
◾Valley of the Slavyanka River and Krasnodolinnye ponds,
◾Pridvortsovy district,
◾Old Sylvia,
◾New Sylvia,
◾White birch,
◾Parade field.

Charles Cameron, who supervised the construction of the park in 1780-1786, determined the layout of the main areas and laid the main roads. Under his leadership, the Pavlovsk Palace and many park pavilions were built. In 1796-1801, construction continued under the leadership of the architect V. Brenna. In 1801-1828, the work was headed by P. Gonzago.

Pavlovsk Park is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful examples of landscape art and is one of the largest landscape parks in Europe (its area is over 600 hectares). But not only famous park attracts the attention of numerous guests of St. Petersburg and local residents. An unusually harmonious combination architectural structures, included in palace and park ensemble, with the picturesque surroundings of the Slavyanka River, touched up by the skillful hands of architects and masters of landscape art, amazes and enchants. The proportionality of artificial buildings and natural landscapes, the consonance with the secret strings of the human soul of the entire Pavlovian ensemble is the merit of both talented creators and members of the imperial family, namely Paul I and his wife Maria Fedorovna, who not only poured their soul into their beloved country estate, but and spent the happiest years of their lives here.

The park amazes with its size and individual areas, completely different in character and composition, and all together forming one organic whole. A whole day is not enough to explore all of Pavlovsk, because only the path from the main entrance (from railway station) to the Pavlovsk Palace takes about half an hour at a leisurely pace. What about those who came to St. Petersburg for only a week and cannot afford to set aside a few days to explore Pavlovsk Park alone?

Recently, visitors to the park have the opportunity to save valuable time and rest their tired legs by exploring some of the sights, comfortably sitting on the benches of a sightseeing locomotive equipped with an audio guide. The cost of such a service is low: an adult ticket costs 300 rubles, a child ticket costs 150 rubles. The excursion, which takes place in the areas of Bolshaya Zvezda, New and Old Sylvia, is accompanied by musical and poetic works, one way or another connected with the Pavlovsk palace and park ensemble.

The train departs from the Pavlovsk Palace, elegant and majestic in its yellow and white decoration. It was created by Charles Cameron at the end of the 18th century, and then expanded and modified by architects V. Brenna, A. Voronikhin and G. Quarenghi. From the main square in front of the palace, the train will proceed along Triple Linden Alley, which is the leading axis of the palace part of the park, and will take passengers directly to the Aviary pavilion, or Poultry House, where under Maria Feodorovna there were greenhouses with exotic flowers and plants and small “chamber” balls were held.

The next point on the route is the Milk House, skillfully hidden in dense thickets of trees. Under the empress, there was once a stable with cows here, and everyone close to the royal family could taste the freshest dairy products. Next, the train will proceed to New Sylvia, at the entrance of which there is a statue of Apollo Musageta with a cithara in his hands, then through Old Sylvia, and along one of its alleys it will reach the Stone Amphitheater, located on the right bank of the Slavyanka.

On the left bank there was the Zemlyanoy Amphitheater, where performances took place, and spectators enjoyed the action from the right bank. Next, passengers will see the Visconti Bridge, which connects the Lilac and Cricova paths, and will follow the Alley of the Green Woman, one of the twelve paths of the Big Star area, which suffered greatly at the hands of the German invaders. In the center of Big Star there is a Music Salon, where music concerts are still held today.

The subsequent route of the train passes by the Cast Iron (Nikolaevsky) Gate, installed at the entrance to the park from Tsarskoe Selo. These gates were a gift from Nicholas I for the birthday of his mother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, who doted on her country residence - Pavlovsk. From the Cast Iron Gate the train will go to the Celebration Square, whose name speaks for itself, proceed along Krasnodolinnaya Alley, the longest in the park, and pass the Temple of Friendship, created by Charles Cameron in the form of an antique rotunda with columns. Along Slavyanka, past Staroshaleinye ponds, the train will go to the Piltoshenny Bridge and the tower of the same name, which was once used as a resting place at the bathhouse.

From the bridge, the excursion will continue towards the Ruin Cascade, designed by the architect V. Brenna, and return to the area of 12 paths (the Old Sylvia area). From there, the train will follow the path along the Parade Field, which was created by the Italian decorator P. Gonzago, and before that Paul I used it as a parade ground for soldiers, and past the Rose Pavilion, located at the junction of three areas of the park: Parade Field, White Birch and Old Sylvia. Concluding the trip, the train of two carriages along Teatralnaya Alley will return to the square in front of the Pavlovsk Palace.

Route:

Pavlovsk Palace - Triple Linden Alley - Aviary - Dairy - Statue of Apollo Musageta - Stone Amphitheater - Viskontev Bridge - Alley of the Green Woman - Musical Salon - Cast Iron Gates - Celebration Square - Red Valley Alley - Temple of Friendship - Staroshaleinye Ponds - Pilltower Bridge - Ruin Cascade -12 paths - Parade Field - Theater Alley.

It's time to walk through Pavlovsky Park.
I laid out dozens of routes for myself there.

Today I will show you the Secluded route.

This - best route, if you have been sitting too long and want to properly walk through the most remote and romantic places parka.
A route through the most secluded areas of the park, without visiting the Palace and places where tourists gather.
I was delighted with this route.
You can have a great rest and take a walk.

Do you have time to see the most Beautiful places“White Birch”, walk along Slavyanka.

The route begins and ends on the beautiful, straight, seemingly endless Izhora Alley.
To view the map in more detail, you need to click on it:

It is convenient to go to Pavlovsk via Pushkin. And there you definitely want to go to the Feodorovsky Cathedral.

For several years now we have been trying to meet the golden autumn in the picturesque park. Finally this year we were able to implement old dream, going to Pavlovsky Park on the right day!

We met this park many years ago at a friends wedding. But we walked there just a little, not really seeing anything around except the newlyweds. 🙂 But we clearly remembered that in the park there are very friendly squirrels, which you don’t have to lure for a long time in the hope of feeding.

Therefore, when choosing a place for a walk this time, we gave our preference to Pavlovsky Park: the place is beautiful, the entrance is not expensive (100 rubles per adult, a child got in for free), and even contact proteins.
The journey took us 1.20, there were a lot of cars! Moreover, there were a lot of people in the park too! The people, like us, were eager to go for country walks.

We immediately had a problem with the entrance... The park covers an area of about 600 hectares! We indicated in the navigator the official address (20 Sadovaya Street), where the Grand Palace and, apparently, the administration are located museum complex. In addition, it was there that we entered the park for the very first time (as it turned out later). However, as we approached the given point, we counted 2 more entrances, and a little further on the third. All are equipped with ticket offices and turnstiles. We were unable to determine offhand which of them was the main one or the front one.

Therefore, advice: before you go for a walk in Pavlovsky Park, take a look at the map and select the area of the park that you would like to go around. This will help you decide on the right input.

We can schematically offer you the following routes around Pavlovsky Park (walking time is about 2-3 hours):

So, I repeat, we went to Grand Palace. The main alley (Triple Lime Alley) leads from it to the square where the Memorial to the Victims of the Revolution is located.

On the right side you can see the Aviary, Labyrinth and Rossi Pavilion; on the left side there is the exhibition Great Circles and Rossi's Gazebo.

If you go to the right of the Memorial, you will come to another entrance (aka exit). Its value lies in the fact that it has snack bars (by the way, the pies were delicious!) and souvenir shops. If you go left from the Memorial, you will go to another area of the park.

After having a snack, we went left. 🙂 There are also paths directly, but the nearest marks on the map (the island and the column of Princess Lieven, the Deer Bridge and the Rose Pavilion Ponds) are quite far away.

By the way, be careful: carriages with horses are passing along the Triple Lime Alley and to the left.

But there, not far from the Milk House (where the cafe is now located), we met the first squirrels. With all the variety of pasture food (acorns, pine cones, etc.), squirrels eagerly swallowed and hid hazelnuts and walnuts. There was less interest in seeds and almonds.

But, to be fair, it was worth going to the Monument to Parents (dedicated to the parents of Maria Feodorovna, wife of Paul I), and then walking along the Slavyanka River. Then on the left we would see the Air Theater, and on the right - the Cast Iron Bridge and the Temple of Friendship (dedicated to Catherine II).

Then we went out to the Great Stone Staircase, looked at the Black Bridge and the Humpbacked Bridge, and returned along the Grand Palace to the entrance. But if we had walked a little further along the river, we would have looked at the Cold Bath and the Bridge of the Centaurs, and looked into the Own Garden and the Pavilion of the Three Graces.

In our opinion, this route (which took us more than 3 hours) is perfect for a first acquaintance with Pavlovsk Park! And if you still manage to get on an excursion to the palace itself (we didn’t go because the child was already tired and couldn’t stand the excursion), then it would be just great.

By the way, in addition to the squirrels, this time we also managed to hand-feed the birds! Tits and nuthatches (as it later turned out) took the same walnuts on an open palm.

For ease of movement, you can rent an electric car or take a sightseeing train.

And finally, a few more photos of the beautiful autumn Pavlovsk Park!
