On January 3, 1933, exactly 82 years ago, the French ocean liner"L" Atlantique. The liner was launched in 1930 and with its tonnage of 40,945 registered tons was the 3rd largest in France and 12th in the world; the liner was intended to work with ports east coast South America(sailed from French Bordeaux to Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo and Buenos Aires) until the appearance of the Oriana and Canberra liners in the late 1950s "It was the largest passenger ship operating on non-North Atlantic routes. The liner departed on its first voyage on September 29, 1931.

At the time of its death, "L" Atlantique was one of the most luxurious ships in the world. The interiors of the liner were decorated in Art Deco style - this is what the creators of "L" Atlantique " imitated another French liner -"Ile de France".

First class cabins

The central, axial place of the liner became the famous “Rue de Atlantic” -a kind of street 140 meters long and 6 meters wide, on which kiosks of the most fashionable Parisian shops and salons were located.

But “L"Atlantique” is equal like another famous French liner from the 1930s, SS "Normandie" - did not roam the expanses of the Atlantic for long. On January 3, 1933, while being transported from Bordeaux to Le Havre for scheduled repairs, the ship unexpectedly caught fire; the crew of 200 people (of whom 18 died in that fire) failed to save the ship. The charred hulk of the ship was later transported to Cherbourg, where the once ultra-luxury liner was dismantled for scrap.
The cause of the fire could not be determined. According to one version
the ship was destroyed by competitors - English, Italian and German shipping companies were then fiercely fighting for dominance on the European-South American route, and none of them wanted the appearance of a fourth strong rival, and even in the midst of the Great Depression. According to another versionthe ship was burned by the owner himself, who received insurance for it in the amount of 170 million francs: this slow-moving giant had no commercial success, and the insurance premium allowed the company that owned the ship "Compagnie de Navigation Sude Atlantique"avoid bankruptcy. In any case, the mystery of death"L"Atlantique" remained unsolved.
