In Iceland, glaciers and volcanoes are locked in a never-ending battle for dominance.

Iceland - unique country. Its capital, Reykjavik, has virtually no brick houses, mostly corrugated iron roofs, and you'll always notice steam somewhere. The fact is that Iceland is a volcanic island, devoid of natural building materials; a land on which nature itself has not yet finished its construction, tirelessly tearing it in half - as it sits on the crest of the North Atlantic Ridge, and stretching it - as Greenland and Scotland continue to move away from each other.

Formation Atlantic Ocean began about 180 million years ago, and Greenland began to separate from Scotland about 60 million years ago, resulting in Tertiary volcanic areas in Northern Ireland, North-West Scotland and South-East Greenland. The oldest rocks in Iceland were formed no more than 60 million years ago, and since then the island has continued to grow, layering more and more layers of lava during prolonged eruptions that laid the foundation active volcanoes today. Despite the internal heat, Iceland was covered in ice during the last Ice Age, and the remnants of this sheet form the ice caps and glaciers of today.

Evidence is everywhere volcanic activity- from large cones active volcanoes, such as Hekla (a powerful eruption in 1947, the last, not so significant - in 1991), to extinct craters, many of which now have picturesque lakes and vast areas of hot springs. The types of springs are extremely varied: from sulfuric pools of boiling mud, reminiscent of Dante's Hell, to crystal clear turquoise silicon springs and geysers. The Great Geyser in the Valley of Geysers gave its name to all the other gushing springs, and although it produces a fountain less and less often, it still does so extremely spectacularly.

Hot springs have long been an appreciated geological heritage of Iceland. Today, Reykjavík's central heating uses the island's geothermal waters, which are supplied to all public buildings and private homes. Not far away, in Hveragerdi, you can buy tomatoes and bananas right by the road, which are grown in greenhouses heated by natural hot water.

Iceland is located just below the Arctic Circle, in the North Atlantic, between Greenland and Scotland. It is connected by regular flights with America and Denmark, and there is also a sea connection. The best way to travel around the country is on a four-wheeled vehicle, or the more traditional route - on an Icelandic pony.

Facts and figures

Iceland's area is 102,797 sq. km, and about 11.5% of it is covered by ice caps and glaciers. Population: 262,202 (1992 census); the interior of the island is virtually uninhabited, especially in winter. The country's highest peak is Hvannadalshnu-kyur (2,119m) on Iörefayo-kull in the south. Hraunhafnartangi is the northernmost point of Iceland - above the Arctic Circle. Major eruptions of Eldgyau (896) and Laki (1783) volcanoes produced extensive basalt sheets typical of the Central Atlantic Ridge fault, which diverges at about 2 cm per year. Among the recent eruptions, the eruption on Surtsey (1963) is also famous - new island arose near the southern coast, on Heimaeyi (1974), on Vestmannaeyjar, when the fishing village on the island was under threat.

Glaciers of Iceland

Vatnajökull is the largest of the glaciers, lying above many geothermal springs, one of which feeds Grimsvetn - unique lake in the middle of a glacier whose surface is usually covered with ice. The sources of the river Jökulsau au Fjöllum lie in the northern part of the Vatnajökull glacier, and the hot springs, melting the ice, form a pipe in it leading to the lake above. In 1983, an expedition of canoeists lowered their boats into this pipe and then sailed through a tunnel in the ice to an open river, along which they descended to the North Atlantic. The limit has been set for the smaller Laundjökull glacier to the south big lake, in which icebergs often float - “shards” of the glacier.
