How to travel to Koh Chang on your own

Koh Chang Island ( Koh Chang) is located in the Gulf of Thailand at a distance of more than 300 km from Bangkok. We recommend that upon arrival in Thailand, you stop for a couple of days in Bangkok and then continue your independent journey by going to Koh Chang. However, if after the flight you feel the strength to continue the journey, spending about 5 hours on the bus and half an hour on the ferry, you can go to Koh Chang directly from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Koh Chang from Bangkok

Moving from Bangkok to Koh Chang is carried out in three steps:
Step 1 ;
Step 2;
Step 3.

Note that there is an easier way to do this. Buy a ticket to minibus from Mochit station to the pier on Koh Chang (the ferry is included in the ticket price). True, buses run only 4 times a day, all flights are in the morning. Ticket price - 400 baht. You can buy online.

Step 1. We arrive at the Ekkamai bus station

There are many ways to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang. One of the most convenient, in our opinion, bus from the eastern bus station Ekkamai. The bus station is located next to the BTS Skytrain station, also called Ekkamai (marked on the BTS map). Thus, getting to the bus station is very quick and easy.

Buses that take you directly to the pier Laem Ngob, depart in the morning, at 7.45. And 9.45. (departure times change periodically). Travel time - about 5 o'clock. Travel cost - approx. 300 baht.
Note that, in addition to buses to the pier, buses depart to Trat almost every hour, or even half an hour. From the bus station in this town you can get to the pier by tuk-tuk in 30-40 minutes. Just tell the taxi driver: "Ferry to Koh Chang".

Step 2. Transfer by ferry to Koh Chang

Ferries leave every half hour from 6.30. until 19.00. Travel time - approx. 30 minutes. Ticket price - 80 baht.

Tuk-tuks await tourists at the pier. The fare is from 50 to 120 baht and depends on the location where your hotel is located.
Sit down, drive, pay for the fare, go check into the hotel.

Koh Chang from Suvarnabhumi Airport

We have already noted that going to Koh Chang directly from the airport is not the best option, but, nevertheless, such a possibility exists. A large bus runs from the airport once a day (does not go to low season) and there are also minibuses. For 655 baht you will be taken from the airport directly to the island. Tickets can be purchased online on the website.

Hotels on Koh Chang

The majority of hotels on Koh Chang are located on the beaches on the western side of the island. Prices start at 300 baht for thatched sheds.

By minibus to the beach. For example, a trip to White Sand Beach costs 400 baht. A taxi from Trat Airport to the hotel costs 2,000 baht.

From Trat bus station to the pier

If you have chosen transport for your trip, then the question: “How long does it take to travel from Bangkok to Koh Chang” cannot be answered absolutely definitely. It all depends on how much time you spend searching for the songthaew to the pier, and which one they will take you to. From the closest one to the city – Laem Ngob Pier – the island is about 9 kilometers away. And from the farthest (but closest to the airport) - Koh Chang Ferry Pier - about five. It is possible to determine who travels faster - the ferry or the songthaew - only experimentally.

Be sure to try to find yourself a company in advance. For the reason that the island bombers try to stuff the body more tightly. They carry singles at a special, cosmic rate. The cost of services increases as the sun goes down.

On the island of Koh Chang, then you, like me at one time, are faced with the question of choosing transport and route. So, how to get to Koh Chang island on your own?
Koh Chang is an island and can only be reached from the city of Trat. That is, in any case, no matter what corner of the country you get from, no matter what method of transportation you use, you will have to visit the city of Trat. And from the pier in the city of Trat, either a ferry or a boat will take you to the island.

Let's take a closer look at the option of how to get to Trat from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

From Bangkok Airport to Trat

If you arrived at Bangkok airport with the difficult-to-pronounce name Suvarnabhumi, then there are several options for how to get to Trat:

  • Taxi from the airport or city
  • Bus from the city
  • Minivan from the city
  • Airplane Bangok Trat
  • Minivan from the airport

Taxi

A taxi is the simplest, but also, of course, one of the most expensive options. You can order it either in the airport building, in the official pavilion (on the ground floor there will be a counter with the sign Public Taxi or you can ask any airport employee), or by going outside. If you decide to take a taxi on the street, bargain. On average, such a trip will cost about 3000-3500 baht and take 4-5 hours. For a family traveling with children, this option is quite acceptable. But not for us: it’s a little expensive, too simple, and I’m sure that “our people don’t take a taxi to the bakery shop” :).

Bus from the city

You can get to Trat by bus from one of the bus stations. This will be either Ekamai Bus Terminal (East Bus Terminal) or Mo Chit Bus Terminal (Northern Bus Terminal).

Ekamai Bus Terminal and Mo Chit Bus Terminal bus stations on the Bangkok metro map:

Ekkamai Bus Terminal is located next to the Ekkamai metro station of the same name, literally 100 meters from the exit. As soon as you exit the metro, you will immediately see the bus station building.

Mo Chit Bus Terminal is also located near the Mo Chit metro station. But here the distance is a little greater. You will have to either walk 20 minutes from the metro or take a taxi.

The bus itself will be large, quite spacious and comfortable. Depending on the carrier company, you will be given blankets and drinking water on board. As a rule, these buses are used by the local population, and it is not customary for them to express emotions violently. So you have every chance to get there in peace and quiet.

There is enough space for luggage here. The option is quite budget-friendly - about 270 baht, but the trip will take about 6 hours, since the bus will stop frequently. And be careful, many drivers do not get to the pier in Trat; they stop in the city itself, a kilometer or two from the pier (you can check this when purchasing a ticket). Even if you are unlucky and your bus does not go to the pier, then for quite reasonable price at 70 baht, a nice fraternity of tuk-tukers will take you to the ferry without delay.

The bus option is good if you are not coming directly from the airport, but are staying in the city for a day or two. Immediately after a multi-hour flight, it’s difficult to go to the station, wait for the bus and sit in it for 6 hours straight. Moreover, there is more ahead of you ferry crossing. I didn’t plan to stay in Bangkok, so this option seemed unsuitable to me.

Minivan from the city

There is an option to get to Trat by minivan from the city: from Victory Monument Square (it is located next to the metro station of the same name). There are pavilions around the monument selling tickets to anywhere in the country; you can buy a ticket to Trat for 300 baht one way. The journey will take approximately 5 hours.

This method is also only good when traveling from the city, and not from the airport. And in this case there is one nuance. There is very little space for luggage in minivans and it is possible that there is no free space for it except on your lap. I rejected this option because I wanted to rush straight from the airport to the island, without wandering around Bangkok.

Airplane Bangok Trat

You can travel from Bangkok airport by plane to Trat airport. Flight time is only an hour. The cost is about 3000 baht - a little expensive, but so fast!

But in reality it turned out that not everything is so simple. There are only three flights to Trat per day. It’s difficult to predict when you arrive. And while you are checking in your luggage, checking in for your flight, waiting for it, flying, standing in line to claim your luggage, getting from Trat airport to the pier, the bus has every chance of overtaking you. Expensive and everything also takes a long time.

By the way, Trat airport is very tiny.

This option, again, did not suit me. It's probably good for families with small children: I think they find running around the airport more interesting than being stuck in a car.

If you choose this method, you can take a taxi further from Trat airport to the pier; as a rule, they wait for the arrival of each plane. Or, to be extra sure, you can order a taxi in advance. You can ask to arrange a transfer to your hotel, this is also practiced.

Transfer to Koh Chang, ordered from any company, hotel or on Koasan Road

There is an option to order a transfer through one of many companies. A large number of them are located on Koasan Road (the main tourist street of Bangkok), or via the Internet. There are even Russian-language sites where you can make a similar order. In this case, the cost will vary on average from 400 to 900 baht per ticket for one person. The cost depends on the carrier company you choose and the range of services it provides. By agreement, you will be picked up from the airport or city. They will deliver you to the pier in Trat, or to the hotel on Chang, this must be agreed upon in advance.

I once used such a service, but it was from Chang to Bangkok, and not vice versa, since ordering a transfer to an arriving plane seemed unreliable to me. Planes have a bad habit of often being late, the flight can even be rescheduled, and such companies usually work on prepayment.

Minivan from the airport

And finally the option that seemed optimal to me. On the ground floor of the airport, next to gate number eight, there is a small kiosk that sells tickets to Chang. Not only, of course, in Chang, in other parts of the country too. It's not hard to recognize by its yellow sign. Just pay attention: this pavilion is located on the first floor! When you arrive, get your luggage and go downstairs, behind the glass doors you can see the road, cars, a complete illusion that you are on the first floor. But that's not true. You went down from the third floor to the second. You need even lower. The first time, having arrived and not realizing that I was above ground level, I made several circles around the second floor of the airport in search of this kiosk :-).

The cost of such a transfer is 600 baht per person, in my case, the cost of the ferry was already included in the ticket, I was supposed to be taken directly to the hotel on the island. I didn’t quite understand how this would happen, but since they promised to deliver, I’m ready to at least sail in a minivan. This is almost exactly what happened later.

This company has only a few flights to Chang: two or three in the morning. Moreover, these flights are not tied to the schedule, if there is one. The minivan is filled with passengers and departs when free seats doesn't stay.

There is not much space for luggage here, but it is there. All the passengers on my flight had luggage, but the driver, apparently, has been playing Tetris with bags for years - he managed to pack everything very cleverly. I traveled around Thailand several times with similar companies. The first time, when boarding, they put a necklace of orchids on me, and several more times they put colored pieces of paper on me, like luggage. The first time I thought: “This is probably an expression of hospitality.” Subsequent times: "Bureaucracy". And now it seems to me that this is a way for the driver to mark his farangs (foreigners), so that, God forbid, he does not lose them during a stop. They are all alike - big, white and it is not clear what they are babbling in their own language.

Travel time is approximately five hours. There are two gas station stops along the way. Gas stations have everything you need: toilets, cafes, small shops, but no ATMs. The stop takes 10-20 minutes. The driver informs you in advance how long the stop lasts.

Through the entire city of Trat you are taken to the pier, then you slowly, in a series of other cars, drive on board directly in a minivan. The driver parks on the first floor of the ferry, and all passengers move to the second floor, where there is a small kiosk, benches and a stand with free maps.

At first glance, the ferry does not inspire much confidence: it looks like a huge rusty trough, but this vehicle I have tried it many times and it is quite reliable.

Having moored to the pier, the cars also drive ashore one after another and take their passengers to final points appointments. That is, in this case, to the hotel you need. They will give you a ride directly to the hotel, and they will also help you carry your things to the reception.

From Trat to Koh Chang

If your ticket did not include the ferry, you will need to buy one at the pier. Here, in general, everything is clear, they stand ticket offices right in front of the entrance to the pier. If you suddenly don’t see it and pass by, the employees still won’t let you through, they’ll show you the cash register. The cost is 80 baht per person one way, 120 baht in both directions, baggage, whatever it may be, is not paid. Children under 8 years old travel for free. Swim for about half an hour.

And yes, there are several piers in Trat, the main ones being Center Point Ferry Pier and Ko Chang Ferry Pier (or also called Ao Thammachat). There are a few more, but they don’t carry tourists; they are used mainly by the local population and for trips to other islands of the archipelago.

Personally, I advise you to go to Ko Chang Ferry Pier (Ao Thammachat). Ferries leave from here every half hour, starting at 6.30 am. From Center Point Ferry Pier ferries start running a little earlier, from 6.00, but the interval between them is longer - an hour.

Be careful, the last ferry leaves at 19.00, rarely stays until 19.30. There will be no further ferries until the morning. If you suddenly arrive at the pier after this time, there is still a chance to get to the island. There are private carriers that will take you on their boat, but it is not cheap, about 3,000 baht. Moreover, you will need to try to negotiate on the spot, or order such a service in advance from some company.

From Ko Chang Pier to the center

There are no and cannot be any problems with leaving the pier deep into the island. Tuk-tukers guard every ferry, with trained eyes they look for people who are not tanned enough and invite them aboard their “ship”. The cost will be around 50-80 baht per person, depending on the distance of your hotel. They know all the hotels by ear, so they shouldn’t confuse them and deliver them to the other side of the world. By the way, traveling by tuk-tuk on the roads of the island is very impressive. The road is made in such a way as to cause minimal harm to the jungle, the crazy ups and downs are no worse than on any attraction. And all this in a car like this.

On my first trip, I properly clung to the window while driving the car up the hill. I didn't want to end up on the asphalt. And you won’t believe it, but it’s two-story. Luggage is usually carried on top of the roof if there are many passengers. A couple of times, I saw the local population skating there. Of course, tourists are not accommodated on the roof.

In any case, no matter what transport you choose for your trip to Koh Chang, I am sure that this island will steal your heart just as it once stole mine!

How to get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Koh Chang

Bus and minivans

This is the most cheap way, but not very convenient, since transport runs only 4 times a day and flights are only available in the first half of the day (and in the low season some may be canceled).

This company's air-conditioned bus No. 392 runs only in high season and departs from the airport at 7:50 (times may vary). Arrives at Ao Thammachat Pier on the mainland, where you are given free ferry tickets to Koh Chang (these are included in the transfer price).

Ticket price is 600 – 700 baht one way. The total travel time is about 7 hours including the ferry. On the way back from Koh Chang to Suvarnubhumi Airport, the bus leaves from Ao Thammachat Pier at 13:00.

In addition to the bus, this company has 3 minivan routes that operate all year round, not just in high season. Departures are at 09:30, 11:00, 14:00, although some are sometimes canceled if there are not enough people. The fare costs the same and also includes a ferry ticket. All minivans go to (the final stop at the Siam Beach Resort and Siam Hut Bungalows hotels), pass along the road and make stops at other Koh Chang beaches (they don’t go directly to the hotels, but drop people off on the main road). You will most likely be at your hotel 7 hours after departure from the airport.

Tickets for buses and minivans can be booked in advance online. This is recommended if you want to be guaranteed to get to Koh Chang on the same day. This is especially true in the high season from November to May. Well, if you have a lot of time or you arrive early in the morning, before the first flight, then you can buy tickets on the spot. It’s true that it’s not a fact that you’ll get on the next flight.

shuttle

There is also a free shuttle from Suvarnabhumi to where you can change to a bus to Koh Chang (these buses depart from bus stations in Bangkok and make a stop at the airport). True, there are few flights and most of them go not to the pier, but to, from where you still have to drive more than half an hour to the pier. This option is not as good, but you can still use it.

Taxi

If you have big luggage, small children, arrived after 13:00 (most likely you won’t have time for a minivan at 14:00) or you just don’t want to wait for the bus, but go in comfort, then it’s better to take a taxi to Koh Chang. The cost, of course, is higher than by bus, but you won’t have to worry about anything. If you order a transfer from Bangkok airport in advance, they will meet you, help you carry your suitcases, and take you directly to your hotel on the island. At the same time, you will get there 2-3 hours faster than if you were waiting for the minivan to depart.

How to get from Koh Chang to Suvarnabhumi Airport

You can use the same company - The Suvarnabhumi Burapha Bus Company - and order a transfer in advance. Minivans depart at 07:00, 09:00, 17:00, 19:00 (sometimes some are cancelled). Follow the link and you will receive all up-to-date information by time and price of tickets for a specifically selected date.

If you are not satisfied with the departure time, you will have to take a taxi on the spot or.

How to get from Don Muang Airport to Koh Chang

There are no direct buses or minivans from the airport to the island, not even one from where you could get to the pier in half an hour. Thus, there are 2 options left: a bus with a transfer or a taxi.

Bus and minivan

You can also take a shuttle from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi Airport, which runs every hour. Well, then we wrote above. The method is very time-consuming and it is not a fact that in Suvarnabhumi you will be able to find a cheap transfer to Koh Chang that day.

Taxi

IN reverse side the road will also be long. However, ask around at street travel agencies on the island, maybe someone will organize a direct transfer to the airport.

If not, then take a ticket from Koh Chang to the Mo Chit bus station, and from there take a taxi to Don Muang Airport.

Hello friends. I always wanted to go to some exotic island. Feel like a native, eat bananas and swim in the sea. And such an opportunity presented itself. Alla and I visited, where there are many wonderful beaches, virgin nature and a large selection of entertainment for tourists. We made reservations before the trip and were ready to go to the island. All that remained was to find out how to get there, how long it would take to travel. The distance is not small - 330 km. I had to scour the Internet and find out all the options. I'm sharing with you.

From this article you will learn how to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang on your own using various means of transport, the cost of moving and how long it will take.

Very important! We must remember that some buses from Bangkok go to the city of Trat, closest to the island of Koh Chang, which is also the capital of Trat province. Arriving at the Trat bus station, you transfer to a local taxi (songthaew), which takes you to Koh Chang pier in 10 minutes (price 70 baht).

There is another option: the bus stops on the highway and tourists are picked up by a specially fitted pickup truck, which takes them to the pier. Then ferry and island taxi to your beach. In short, this is it. Now more details.

From Bangkok East Bus Terminal Ekkamai Bus Terminal

This option is the easiest, since buses from Ekkamai Bus Terminal (also called Eastern Bus Terminal) to Koh Chang depart every 30 minutes, from 6 am to 11 pm. The bus station is located in the city center next to the Ekkamai metro station, a 5-minute walk.

We wrote where the bus stations are in Bangkok and how to get to them.

The cost of the trip is 250-280 baht one way. The price includes a bottle of water and snacks. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours. The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, provide blankets, and make a couple of stops along the way.
All buses arrive at the Trat bus station. As I wrote above, at the station you take a songthaew and go to the pier.

From Victory Monument metro station

The metro station is located in the city center. Suvarnabhumi Airport is a 40-minute drive away. From the city it's even faster. From here to Koh Chang there are minibuses, or minivans. And what’s good is that it’s right to the Koh Chang pier. Dispatched frequently. Tickets are sold near city bus stops and the market. Ticket price 300 baht. Travel time is 5 hours.

Cons: The minivan doesn't have much luggage space. Sometimes you have to put your suitcase in the aisle. We were traveling in such a minivan from Koh Chang to Pattaya, we could barely fit our luggage, and there were quite a lot of people there. We got seats in front next to the driver. The seat was uncomfortable, I sat for 4 hours either on the springs or on the edge. The body is noticeably tired. Now in Thailand I prefer to travel by bus.

From Khao San Road area

Very lucky are those who stay in Bangkok on Khao San Road. It will be easiest for them to buy a ticket and get to Koh Chang. A transfer to Koh Chang (you can buy a round-trip ticket right away, it will be a little cheaper) can be purchased at the so-called local travel agencies, which are located on the street at every turn. Choose the most beautiful one and go there. Transfer cost 400-900 baht per person.

It’s even easier to buy a transfer at the hotel itself (where you live) at the reception. If suddenly your hotel does not have such a service, go to a neighboring hotel.

Only minivans operate from Khao San Road. Buses simply don't go there. I voiced the minus of the minivan above. If this doesn't bother you and you live on Khao San Road, then look no further for other options. Buy here and better the day before your trip. There are many tourists who want to go to Koh Chang. Transfer from Khao San Road is popular.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport

There are three options for getting there from the airport.

1. By bus No. 392 by Suvarnabhumi Burapha Bus service. Takes you to Koh Chang via the mainland Centerpoint Pier. On the island, you are transferred from the bus to a songthaew, which takes tourists to the desired beach.

Departures from the airport once a day: 7.50. Return from Koh Chang at 13.00. From Trat to Suvarnabhumi airport at 14.00. That is, the return route of the bus is as follows: Koh Chang Island - Trat Airport.

One way ticket price is 600 baht. Round trip 900 baht. The price includes a ferry ticket, a bottle of water, and snacks. The site of the company.

2. Lonely Beach express minibus from the same company. It will take you straight to the beach. Tickets are sold on the ground floor of the airport next to Gate 8. How to order tickets online is described on the company's website.

One way ticket price is 600 baht. Round trip 900 baht. The ferry is included in the price. The minibus makes a couple of stops along the way.

3. From the bus station at Bus Terminal Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Buses to Trat pass through it. northern bus station Mo Chit. WITH southern bus station Government Bus 999 runs through Ekkamai airport bus station.

I gave the schedule above. Just add half an hour to an hour for the bus journey from the bus station to the airport.

Transfer to Koh Chang

For those who love comfort and don’t want to make unnecessary movements, I recommend ordering transfer online, that is, book a car with a driver in advance via the Internet.

You will be met in the arrivals hall, your luggage will be carried to your car and you will be taken exactly to the main entrance of the hotel. You can order a transfer to Koh Chang online using the form below. At the time of booking you need to pay about 15% of the transfer cost, the rest of the amount is paid in cash to the driver. A group transfer will be more affordable.

Taxi to Koh Chang

You can take a taxi at the airport, arrange it on the street, or at your hotel in Bangkok. The cost of a taxi to the ferry is approximately 2500-3500 baht, to the hotel on Koh Chang 4000-6000 baht (the taxi is loaded onto the ferry with you). You can try to bargain.

I wrote prices for a standard car that can fit 4 people. For a large company you will have to order a minivan. Booking will cost a little more, but if you spread it across the whole group, it will be cheaper per person.

Car rent

If you know how and like to drive a car, you can take it to. It’s certainly nice to manage your own time and route, but remember that traffic in Thailand is on the left. The roads are good, but if you deviate from the main routes, you may end up with “surprises”. What driver's license is needed to drive in Thailand read here.

By plane from Bangkok to Trat

Koh Chang does not have its own airport. The nearest one is in Trat. Therefore, from Bangkok, and indeed from other parts of the country, you will need to buy an air ticket to Trat airport. Only one airline flies there, Bangkok Airways. One way price 3200 baht, travel time 1 hour. They fly 3 times a day.

Hurry up to buy a plane ticket to Koh Chang

At the airport, take a taxi, minibus or minibus and go to the pier. The cost of a minibus to the pier is 100 baht, the cost of a minibus to the beach is about 400 baht (to White Sand Beach), a taxi to the hotel is 2000 baht.

How to get from Trat to Koh Chang

If a bus from Bangkok brings you to the Trat Bus Terminal, then after disembarking you take a taxi (songthaew), which can easily be found here. Tell the driver ferry to Kho Chang and he will take you to the pier in a few minutes without any problems. The asking price is 50-100 baht. If the driver asks you which pier to take you to, then...read the next section.

Ferries to Koh Chang

There are 2 piers on the mainland side from which ferries run to Koh Chang. They have different schedules and different time on my way.

1. Ko Chang Ferry Pier, also known as Ao Thammachart. It is closer to Bangkok. And more often this is where buses, minivans and other tourist transport run.

They run every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm. They float for 25-30 minutes. The cost is 80 baht one way, 120 baht round trip with an open date in the opposite direction. The price for a car there and back is 200 baht.

2. Center Point Ferry Pier. They go every hour. Swim for 1 hour. Distance to Trat 20 km. Ferries run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until 9:00 p.m. The cost is 80 baht one way, 120 baht round trip with an open date in the opposite direction. We did not depart from this pier. They say that they do not charge money for transporting the car.

How to get from the ferry to the beach

When the ferry takes you to the island, you will have several options to get to the beach. Since almost all the hotels are located along the only road on the island, getting to the hotel will not be difficult.

1.If your price included a taxi from the ferry to the hotel, then look for a minivan with the name of the company you paid for the transfer with. Show the receipt, get into the car and say the name of the beach or hotel.

2. If the transfer from the ferry to the beach was not included in the price, then choose one of the available pickups. All prices are the same. There is no point in bargaining.

If you have not yet chosen a beach, we recommend that you first stop at the first beach, White Sand beach, and rent accommodation for a couple of days. Take a look, go to nearby beaches. And then decide whether you will stay here or choose another beach. We recommend the beach

As you can see, there are plenty of options for getting to Koh Chang from Bangkok. All you have to do is decide which one to choose, based on your route and departure time to the island. 5-7 hours of travel is still not easy to endure, even if you are traveling on a comfortable bus. Tourists often take night flights. The calculation is simple: save on a hotel and at the same time get some sleep on the way. It's like killing two birds with one stone.

In fact, on the bus you will not be able to stretch your legs and take a horizontal position, and you may also find restless neighbors or parents with an awake child. And your night trip will turn into a nightmare. The next day is lost - you will walk around sluggish or irritable, or just sleep it off.

I'm not discouraging you from traveling overnight. Sometimes this option is very convenient (especially in Europe). Just take note of any road surprises and be prepared for them. So, have a good trip!
