Kamala Beach in Phuket - harmony of nature and relaxation. Kamala Beach, Phuket: the best of the exotic Where to eat

Kamala Beach is the best beach in Phuket in our opinion. Our preferences do not always coincide, but we both liked Kamala at first sight. Kamala has a calm sea, pleasant sand, few tourists and all the necessary infrastructure. We were lucky enough to live on Kamala for a whole month, and during this time we did not get tired of the beach.

Kamala Beach, Phuket

Kamala Beach: description and impressions

What a beauty! - the first thoughts that come to mind when approaching the beach. And what blue water is here! There are no waves, you can swim! We take off our flip-flops - the sand is so soft and fine, it’s as if you’re walking on fluff. And there are so few tourists! I’ve been on the beach for 10 minutes already, and I haven’t heard a single Russian word yet.. Is this really Phuket??

Kamala beach. Phuket

Kamala is a great place to stay in Phuket

The water is clean, although not always crystal clear. For a month I never touched any debris in the water. Usually there are no waves at all or they are very small, only on some days there are medium waves on which you can jump. Sometimes you can feel a bite in the water - a feature of all Phuket beaches. We still don’t understand who bites, small plankton or tiny jellyfish.

Entry into the water is pleasant and smooth, the bottom is sandy without stones and shells. I would even say that the approach and bottom here are simply ideal. To a depth “up to the neck” of 30-40 meters. There are specially fenced safe swimming areas where lifeguards are on duty and boats are not allowed to enter. But at low tide the water goes away and swimming is complicated by the fact that it becomes very shallow.

Waves on Kamala

Few Russian tourists

There are generally few tourists in Kamala, compared with the most famous beaches- Kata, Karon and Patong. The resort is not very popular among Russian-speaking holidaymakers. When we arrived here, I heard Russian speech only on the third day. And I thought that Phuket is the second Pattaya in terms of the number of compatriots. Mostly Europeans, Germans and British, and the Chinese, of course, vacation here. There is also an occasional American accent.

At the end of November, with the onset of the high season, more Russians appeared. Now on the beach, nationalities are mixed in approximately equal proportions. However, according to my observations, the Russians on this beach are not some kind of redneck, but rather decent people. There was no such thing as anyone swearing all over the beach, sorting things out, or staggering around drunk. On this beach there is no shame for the fatherland

How to sunbathe? Sunbed with umbrellas and shade from palm trees

Phuket now has sun loungers again. An umbrella is placed between them. The amenities are not free. Prices seem to be 200 baht for 2 sun loungers and an umbrella. If the price has changed, write in the comments.

These are the homemade sun loungers

If you don’t want to pay for a sun lounger, you can always sit anywhere on the beach on your own towel. Until about lunchtime there will be shade under the palm trees, so umbrellas are not really needed. The main thing is not to lie down under a palm tree with coconuts. On most palm trees they are cut off, but for some reason some palm trees are not touched.

Relaxing in the shade of palm trees

Fun on the beach

Entertainment options include jet skis, banana boats and parasailing. 30 minutes on a scooter costs 1,500 baht. We didn’t find out about the banana and the parachute, but I think it’s worth flying just as much. There are also several massage points in the middle part of the beach.

Cafes and restaurants

There are several beach cafes right on the sand, which are open from 10 am until late in the evening. In the middle part there are several bars and cheap street cafes “for locals”, where tourists eat mainly. The prices are not particularly different from ordinary Thai cafes, well, maybe a little more expensive, because they are on the first line.

Beach cafes

Cheap Thai cafes

There are always several shops near Thai cafes, where we often bought pancakes with banana for 40 baht. It's a little more expensive than on the main road, where the same pancake costs 30 baht. By the way, you can eat in these cafes with your own drinks. I don't know about the liquor, but we used to bring our own soda from 7-Eleven.

Lots of traders

The traders are unobtrusive, you just need to say no or ignore them. But they can quickly get bored with the fact that they come up to you 5 times a day with their elephants, scarves and fake watches.

Where can I order a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online and paid by card. We were met at the airport with a sign with our name on it. We were taken to the hotel in a comfortable car. You've already talked about your experience In this article

The process of hilling tourists

Deserted beach

In the far right corner of Kamala near the mountain is the famous Novotel. Between central beach and the Novotel beach stretches across a deserted, semi-wild area. Here you can position yourself so that there will not be a single tourist within a radius of 100 meters from you

Novotel Beach

Having passed wild beach, we find ourselves on the beach of the Novotel hotel. This is a small corner lagoon, so the sea is always calm. Casuarina trees grow on the shore, providing shade and emitting a pleasant pine scent. Perfect place for swimming with children. But we didn’t really like swimming here, since it’s very shallow.

Low tides

Low tides occur every day, sometimes quite strong. I find swimming at low tide somehow unpleasant. Usually the tide is always high around 10-12 am, and the low tide begins around lunchtime. By evening the water rises again. Sometimes low tide happens early in the morning. I remotely determined whether the tide was low or high by the water level in the stinking river that flows into the sea. At high tide the rivers fill up and dry up at low tide.

Low tide. Photo in the left non-swimable part of the beach

Stinky rivers

Like all Phuket beaches, Kamala has one unpleasant feature - 3 stinking rivers flow into the sea. While swimming, you don’t think about it, and it’s not noticeable that there are any impurities floating in the water or unpleasant odors in the air. Maybe the current carries you away from the beach. But every time you pass by such a river, you try not to inhale its pungent, fetid aroma once again.

Stinking river at high tide

By the way, in this temple, which is in the photo above, we recently celebrated a big Thai celebration.

The left corner of the beach, where one of the rivers flows, is used for boat parking.

Sunsets

I would like to end the article with something more positive than a description of stinking rivers. Kamala has great sunsets. To enjoy the sunset as much as possible, I advise you to go towards Novotel, because in the central part of the beach the sunset will be blocked by the mountain.

Kamala Map

The following diagram shows useful points: swimming areas, 7-elevens, the only toilet (10 baht), cafes, and mini-markets with beach accessories and souvenirs:

How to get to Kamala

On public transport in principle, you can get there cheaper, but it will take longer, since you first have to take a minibus across the entire island to Phuket Town (100 baht), and then change to a Kamala bus (40 baht). Total 140 baht per person. If you know your way around Phuket well, you can take a shortcut, get off right after the Heroes Monument, cross the road and catch a bus to Kamala. But keep in mind that buses only run until 17-18 hours. - no longer relevant! Now there is a bus in Phuket that can take you to Kamala for 150 baht per person.

From other beaches: if you have your own transport, getting there will not be difficult. Just follow the signs north of Phuket along the coast. From Patong it takes about 15 minutes. From Karon and Kata go through Patong.

If you don’t have a bike or a car, you can get there on a Smart Bus. Or by bus with a transfer through Phuket town. You get to the final one (Market bus station) - at the beginning of the street there will be buses to Kamala. As a rule, they are always written in English Bangtao - Surin - Kamala. Travel time is about 1 hour or more, as there may be traffic jams. The fare is 40 baht. These buses look something like this:

You can also get there by taxi. A taxi from Patong costs 400 baht. But, you can bargain with taxi drivers. We went once for 300, another time for 350 ($10).

Kamala Beach in Phuket (Kamala Beach) the beach is very ambiguous for me; for more than a year I can’t decide whether I like it or not :) There are beaches that you fall in love with the first time - for me this best beaches Phuket Surin and , there are beaches that at first glance cause horror - for me these are Kata and Patong, and there are these average beaches that are sometimes very pleasing, and sometimes upsetting. In this article detailed description Kamala beach Phuket, sea, infrastructure, hotels on Kamala beach, photos, reviews.

Kamala Beach in Phuket is so different depending on the time of year, time of day, weather and my mood :)

Description of Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach is a long beach in a bay in the west of Phuket, located north of the popular Patong and south of the beloved. Between Patong and Kamala there is also Kalim Beach, which is not swimmable, and between Kamala and Surin, the passage to which is this moment It is closed by land and can only be reached by sea. Kamala Beach

As I already wrote, Kamala Beach is quite long, the length of the beach strip is about two kilometers. Conventionally, Kamala Beach can be divided into four parts (scheme map below):

  • South part– non-swimable part of the beach, shallow sea, boats, a stinking river flows nearby (number 1)
  • The central equipped part of the beach with all the necessary beach infrastructure and a small walking path near the sea (number 2)
  • The wild part of Kamala beach, which ends with a river (number 3)
  • The northernmost part of Kamala Beach, where the Café Beach Club is located Del Mar Phuket and Novotel Phuket Kamala Beach Hotel (number 4)

The schematic map schematically shows areas of Kamala Beach

All these parts of the beach differ from each other in the quality of the sand, the entry into the sea, the number of people, and the cleanliness.

Vegetation, shade, sand, sea

Gorgeous palm trees and spreading casuarinas (Thai “coniferous” trees with soft “needles”) grow along the entire beach strip, which create good shade in the first half of the day.

The beach has lush vegetation, many casuarinas
There are also plenty of palm trees in Kamala :)

The beach strip at high tide is not very wide, so it’s convenient to sunbathe in the shade under a tree, and then run briefly along the hot sand to cool off in the sea :)

The sand on Kamala Beach is grayish, fine, and in some places mixed with small stones. In the northern part near Novotel the sand is finer.

Sand on the beach
Sand on the beach
The sand in the northern part of the beach near the Novotel hotel is finer and whiter

The entry into the sea is very smooth, in the southern part of the beach the sea is very shallow, swimming is problematic, in the central part the sea is deeper, but at low tide it also becomes shallow. The entrance to the water is without large stones and corals, but here and there there are small pebbles in the water.

Southern part of the beach at low tide. Very fine
Low tide on the beach
Despite the fact that at low tide the sea goes far away, swimming in the sea in the central part of the beach is still comfortable

The color of sea water depends greatly on the time of day and the presence of sun. In the first half of the day in sunny weather, the sea is bright turquoise, but in the evening it is gray... The water in the sea is not as pleasant and gentle as on Surin or Kata Noi, and because of the gray sand at the bottom it does not seem very clean, although in fact it is not this way. In general, the sea on Kamala is similar to the sea on Samui or, i.e. not perfectly transparent!

The sea on Kamala could be this color! Morning on a sunny day
Or something like this. Second half of the day, the dim sun is shining from the sea
The water on this beach does not seem perfectly clear

In summer, Kamala Beach, like most beaches in Phuket, has strong waves; in the off-season (autumn and spring) the waves are small and very pleasant; in winter, Kamala is usually calm.

Not big waves in Kamala in October
Complete calm in winter

Purity

Unfortunately, the Kamala Beach beach is not very clean. The sections of the beach only opposite the hotels are well cleaned, namely the northernmost part of the beach near Novotel and the central part opposite the Kamala Beach Resort (A Sunprime Resort) hotel.

Due to the fact that there are a lot of casuarinas growing on the beach, “needles” from them remain on the sand, there are a lot of leaves on the sand that no one removes. There is a lot of garbage in the wild part of Kamala Beach; several times we even saw foreigners coming with large garbage bags and cleaning up a small section of the beach.

The beach cannot boast of ideal cleanliness; there is quite a lot of natural debris

Kamala Beach infrastructure

Now sunbeds have been returned to some Phuket beaches, which by law must occupy no more than 10% of the beach strip: not all beaches have them, but on Kamala Beach there are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, the cost for two sunbeds and an umbrella is 200 baht per day.

Sun beds and umbrellas on the beach - 200 baht per set
The beds are waiting for tourists :)

There are also paid toilets and showers on the beach, which I saw in those places (I’ll mark them on the map at the bottom of the article):

  • In the northern part of the beach near the river
  • In the Nanork Seafood cafe, which is located on the path between the developed and wild parts of the beach, where everyone parks their vehicles (only the shower here is a hose and a barrel of fresh water :)
  • In the central part of the beach, where the row of cafes along the sea ends and the row of shops begins (the shower is normal, there is even shower gel :)

Toilet 10 baht, shower 20 baht. You can also try to rinse off in the shower for free at the Sunprime Resort hotel.

You can get a massage on the shore, either on mattresses on the sand or in a massage parlor near the shore. Prices for Kamala massage in the photo below:

You can get a massage right on the shore
Or in the lounge with sea view

Along almost the entire coastline there is a concrete walking path, covered in sand here and there. In the central part of the beach, on one side of it there are cafes and even several hotels on the first line, and on the other, the beach itself and the sea. It’s very pleasant to sit in a cafe almost on the very seashore: unfortunately, such cafes that are located right next to the beach strip can rarely be found in Phuket. In the “wild” no-man’s-land of the beach, on one side of the path there is a concrete fence, and on the other the beach itself: it’s convenient to drive up on a bike and park right next to the place where you are lying :)

Prices for Kamala in cafes along the beach are standard, the average cost of dinner is 400 - 500 baht for two.

At the northern end of Kamala Beach is the popular beach club and restaurant Café Del Mar, which hosts brunch on Sundays and parties in the evenings.

Contingent and number of people on the beach

A year ago, Kamala Beach, especially its wild part, was almost empty. In the same season, there is simply an invasion of tourists throughout Phuket (they say that the last time there was such a full house of vacationers in Thailand was in the 2012-2013 season, just when we spent the winter in Thailand for the first time)!

There are a lot of foreign pensioners, Germans, Scandinavians. But there are also enough Russian speakers for Kamala Beach. This beach is often chosen for families with children; many families with strollers walk along the path along the sea or along the surf line during low tide.

Local newlyweds love to come to Kamala for a wedding photo shoot; we have already seen photo shoots on the beach more than once :)

Infrastructure of the Kamala region

The infrastructure of the Kamala region is very well developed. The main road runs approximately 350 m from the beach. There is a large Big C supermarket, many 7 Elevens, Family mart, other shops, banks, cafes, restaurants, and at certain times there are pop-up boxes laid out along the road.

In addition to the pedestrian path with cafes along the sea, Kamala has several small tourist streets with cafes, restaurants, and massage parlors where you can stroll in the evening. These streets reminded me of the main street on Koh Samui.

Streets with hotels and tourism infrastructure within the area
Coffee houses, cafes, shops
Hotels, ATMs, rental offices - Kamala has it all

In the central part, near the embankment, there is a small park with a children's playground and a monument to the victims of the tsunami.

Several times a week, Kamala hosts a sort of Walking Street or, simply put, Night Market, where they sell Thai food, some clothes, and some souvenirs. Despite the fact that the markets are called night markets, they are open from lunch until approximately 19:00 – 20:00.

Markets on Kamala Beach:

  • The Wednesday and Saturday market is located across the street from Big S. Coordinates: 7.946059, 98.279853
  • The market on Mondays and Fridays is here: 7.953813, 98.286008, across the street from the park with the Fantasia show.

Entertainment and attractions

On the Kamala beach itself you can rent a jet ski, ride on the sea on a “banana” or “cheesecake”, rent a SUP board, and in the northern part near the Novotel hotel they rent kayaks.

On Kamala in the southernmost part there is Buddhist temple Wat Kamala, and in the center there is a mosque.

There is a big one here theme park and the show Fantasia (Phuket FantaSea).

Kamala Beach – this beach can be called urban in the full sense of the word. It is located in the central part of Phuket island on its western side and to the north famous beach. In fact, this is the coast of the town of the same name, consisting not only of tourist buildings, but also of the houses of ordinary residents.

Description of the beach

This beach is not small, its length is about 2 km, while its width is very narrow (20 - 30 m). For a long time Kamala was quiet and quiet place. The beach served as a pier for fishing boats and for Thai people to relax. There were very few tourists there. However, in recent years More and more often you can meet older people who have chosen this quiet and peaceful place as a second home.

This is understandable, all the benefits of civilization are at hand, at the same time the sea is just a stone's throw away. In addition to those who moved here, there are now many package tourists here.

The sand on Kamala is white, similar to grains of salt. On beach line There are many hotels and the beach area next to them belongs to them. Accordingly, sand quality and purity can vary significantly.

The beach is popular, but much less noisy than or.

In my opinion, it is somewhat similar to , that is, it is relatively calm and a little village-like, but there are enough people. Cleanliness in Kamala is also okay. Only in the southern “wild” part can there be a lot of garbage.

Entering the water, depth and waves

The southern part of the beach is not suitable for beach holiday. The shore there is rather dirty, there are a lot of stones and cobblestones. Local fishermen often park their boats there. Also on the southern part there is a rather flat entrance, you can walk for a long time to the depths. And in the central and northern parts, where there are umbrellas and sun loungers, the entrance, the closer to the north, the less flat.

The wide line of Kamala Bay favors winds that create large waves. To the north of the beach they rise to heights of up to 3 m, and approaching the shore, they come across a network of underwater reefs and rise even higher. During the monsoon season, red warning flags appear on the beach. Swimming at this time is dangerous. Strong waves can hit you and carry you far from the shore.

Sunbeds and shade

There are not many sunbeds on the beach. In the most visited areas of the beach (center and north), you can rent a sunbed with an umbrella for the standard 100 baht. Hotels that have their own private areas of Kamala often put out additional rows of sun loungers that are available only to guests of the hotel.

The beach can change greatly in different seasons. In high season, the entire beach from the center to the north is one large field of sun loungers. There are a lot of people swimming in the water, the waves are quiet and smooth. In the low season there are few sunbeds; even after half an hour of walking you may not find one.

There is practically no natural shade on the beach, only if it is near the outer row of sunbeds adjacent to the trees, and in the first half of the day, when the sun is not yet so high.

Beach photo

South Kamala (left)

Infrastructure

The beach itself has all the Thai attributes of a beach. Massage parlors, tent cafes, mini-markets and hundreds of sellers of cheap souvenirs, clothing, and beach accessories. There you can not only shop, but also rent a scuba diving device and explore the northern reefs.

In addition, according to many surfers, steep waves are an excellent source of adrenaline, but only experienced specialists should conquer them. If you are an excellent surfer, then Kamala will be your Everest during the wave season. Many available boats, boats and kayaks are also waiting for you on this beach.

Some tourists rent a boat and sail to one of the neighboring, more attractive beaches. But you can ride not only on boats, but also behind them with a parachute or on a banana boat.

Holidays on Kamala are not limited to typical entertainment. Hotels have yoga schools (meditating on one of the Kamala stones against the backdrop of the rising sun is worth a lot), authentic Thai massage parlors and Thai culinary training schools, where they will really teach you how to cook Thai food perfectly.

The combination of beach and civilization gives undeniable advantages to Kamala. You can walk around the village, go to the Friday Market, where there is a large selection of goods not only beach-themed. There is also a mini Tesco and a small Big C.

A trip to the Kamala Temple will also not leave you indifferent, but the most interesting place is (Phuket FantaSea) - this is an incredible and biggest show on the island. In my opinion, it is more intended for children, although adults will also find it interesting.

Hundreds of artists, elephants and other exotic animals will tell you interesting story under the arches of the evening sky. But the Fantasy of Phuket is not limited to performance. She claims to be the most big park entertainment in Phuket. There are many cafes, attractions, fun carnival-like games and, of course, shops.

The architecture of the Elephant Palace and other buildings is pleasing to the eye and stunning. The park itself is filled with helpful employees who will take care of you (they will tell you where the most interesting entertainment and other joys of life). This park is located in the central part of the beach, just 300 m from the shore.

Houses and hotels on the beach

All coastline(1 lane) busy expensive hotels, if we are talking about the central part of the beach. And hotels occupy the entire space from the shore to the main road, which goes far from the shore. In the northern part of the beach there are almost no hotels along the shore; instead, there are vacant lots surrounded by fences (future hotels?). And there the hotels will all be across the road from the beach, and their density is also low.

In terms of prices - the further from the coast, the cheaper, which is logical. You can even find a hostel starting from 200 baht per bed. On the other side luxury hotels, the rooms of which offer unsurpassed beautiful views of Kamala Bay, can cost more than 15 thousand baht per day.

In addition to price, appearance is also an important factor. Here Kamala also provides a large selection. There are modern grotesque hotels made of glass and white stone, and there are cozy mini-coves-pools with wooden houses that form their own special system.
