The airport in Vienna (code VIE), called Vienna-Schwechat, is located 20 km from the city center.

You can get there by train, bus or car. For each method I give personal recommendations.

Personal transfer

This is the most relaxing option, you don’t need to pay attention to stops, you will be met at the airport and taken to the hotel. The cost of the trip will be from 42 euros, depending on the class of car.

By train

There are several ways to get from the airport by train, but the two main ones are: high-speed train CAT ( City Airport Train) and the S7 Schnellbahn train.

It is better to book tickets in advance, so you will greatly save time on booking tickets. I recommend booking. You just need to enter Vienna Airport, and in the other line Vienna. Next, you will be presented with possible options.

SAT

This is a special train route from Vienna to the airport and back. The train departs from Wien Mitte station and takes you to the airport (or back) in 16 minutes without stopping along the way.

Wien Mitte - large Central station, connected to public transport routes:

  • Metro (U3 and U4)
  • Tram (O and 1)
  • Train (S1, S2, S3, S4, S7 and so on)
  • Bus (74A)

CAT trains are very fast, modern, comfortable and spacious.

The cost is 11 euros one way. Departs every 30 minutes. Opening hours: from 5:37 to 23:07.

S7

This train stops at various stops in Vienna, goes to the airport, beyond, and returns.

Vienna and are two different transport zones, so you will need to buy additional ticket if you are using Viennese tourist map, which is intended only for the city.

Click to find out detailed information about public transport tickets.

Due to the stops, this train is slightly slower than the SAT, and it takes 23 minutes to get to Wien Mitte station.

From my own experience I can say that these trains are not the newest and not particularly comfortable; they have less space for luggage and free passage.

But travel is very cheap, and you can leave from any of these stations:

  • Floridsdorf
  • Handelskai
  • Traisengasse
  • Praterstern
  • Wien Mitte
  • Rennweg
  • St. Marx
  • Geiselbergstrasse
  • Zentralfriedhof
  • Kaiserebersdorf

To book a train ticket, enter Vienna Airport - Vienna in the search and get possible options.

By bus

As with trains, there are many different bus routes. The most basic:

Vienna Airport Lines

There are three routes of this carrier with stops throughout the city:

  1. VAL1: from Westbahnhof to the airport via Volkstheater, Rathaus and Schottentor, every 30 minutes;
  2. VAL2: from Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz directly to the airport, every 30 minutes,
  3. VAL3: from Donauzentrum to the airport at intervals of 1 hour via stops:
  • Kagraner Brücke
  • Hotel NH Danube City
  • VIC/Kaisermühlen
  • Krieau
  • Stadion
  • Donaumarina.

Travel time ranges from 17 to 45 minutes, and the cost of one ticket for an adult is 8 euros.

Bus Air-Liner

These buses go directly to the airport from Vienna Bus Station (Erdbergstraße 200 A, 1030 Wien, next to Erdberg station on the U3 metro line), the journey takes only 15 minutes, and leaves every hour from 5:05 to 22:05.

One ticket for an adult costs 5 euros.

Map of stops and stations

Below is a map of stops and stations for public transport to make it easier for you to get from Schwechat Airport to Vienna:

The best articles about Vienna for travelers:

I offer a choice of any convenient method:

City-Airport Train CAT: runs between the airport and Wien-Mitte/Landstraße station. The trip lasts 16 minutes. Single trip ticket for an adult: 11 euros. We buy from vending machines. We prepare small bills. There is control on the lines.

Vienna Airport Lines buses: take you to the city center (trip duration - 20 minutes),

to Westbahnhof station (trip duration - 45 minutes),

to Vienna Meidling Station (trip duration: 30 minutes), as well as to the Vienna International Center (trip duration: 30 minutes). One way ticket: 8 euros. The bus departs directly from the arrival terminal.

S-Bahn S7: Trains run between the airport and Floridsdorf station, passing through Wien-Mitte/Landstrasse station. Travel time to Wien Mitte station: about 26 minutes, price: 4.40 euros; you need to purchase two tickets for 2.20 euros; If you have a Vienna-Card, you only need to purchase one additional ticket for 2.20 euros.

You can buy the Vienna-Card at Vienna Airport in the center tourist information in the arrivals hall; Opening hours: daily from 7.00 to 22.00. The Vienna Card is recognized as the best “discount pass” in Europe. However, you should not expect an attraction of unheard-of generosity. The maximum discount on museum entrance is 1-2 euros. The advantage is the right to free travel on all types of public transport in Vienna for 48 or 72 hours.

The most comfortable way to travel the airport-hotel route is still a taxi or transfer. If you are traveling with a group of 3-4 people, then the cost of a taxi will not exceed the cost of a trip to public transport. It is better to take care of ordering a taxi or transfer in advance so as not to fall into the cleverly laid trap of greedy taxi drivers who love to take tourists on guerrilla trails.
