The hotel was chosen based on location, sea view and holidays with a small (2 year old) child.
We arrived and arrived at the hotel at six o'clock. The formalities took no more than a few minutes and we were in the room.
Room 354 is two-room (our eldest son, who turned 17, also came with us) and has an excellent view of the sea!
The cot for the youngest is already in the room in the bedroom with a double bed.
The room is clean. In the closet there are a pair of white bathrobes and slippers, and a safe. (My two-year-old blocked the safe at the entrance as soon as he discovered it. In truth, the safe was not secured - take it away with Beria)
Two TVs with two Russian channels and 25 multilingual ones.
We managed to take a shower and ran to dinner.
The food at the hotel is a solid five. Restaurant on the ground floor with a good view.
The cooks and service staff do an excellent job.
Constant variety of dishes: meat, fish, vegetables and fruits. Not once in 10 days did I have the feeling of reheated, yesterday's food. Children of two years old have jars, but we found our favorite hippie in Super - he saved us.
Drinks at your own expense in the bar, right there, but ask through the waitress. Excellent wine recommended! The price tag is high, but worth it. There are simply no wines with similar taste and aroma in the supermarket.
For Breakfast-lunch-dinner according to the type " buffet» is allocated for 2.5 hours and at lunch or dinner you really can’t find a free table. But just wait a little and you’ll eat without any problems. Again, a lot depends on the people themselves. As a family, we were able to finish it in 15 minutes, while others sit for an hour having already eaten.
Free coffee at breakfast in the morning.
The pool is huge, it's nice to swim.
Now about the sad stuff.
Sea. The beach itself and the entrance to the sea are sand with stones. Both walking along the beach and entering the water is unpleasant. If you stand with your back to the hotel, facing the sea, it is better to walk a hundred meters to the left and reach an excellent sandy beach and the same entrance to the sea.
You can also go to the right. Walk a lot more than three hundred meters and also find a beach with good sand.
It's not the owners' fault, it's the sea currents.
There were cockroaches in the room!
Bringing food into the rooms is limited, but they (cockroaches) are already there and huge! Every morning they killed at least one.
Drinks were bought at the supermarket next to the hotel. There were no problems carrying it.
The general air conditioning coped with cooling the rooms and did not particularly interfere with sleep for three days. Then water flowed from it - condensation. The repairman came and drained the condensate until the next morning.
For several days we slept with the open balcony (there is a mask net) and it was comfortable.
In the bathroom there is constant water on the floor. It's leaking from under the bathtub. Unpleasant.
Sun beds. There are always free ones. However, those who like to “borrow” in advance and for future use are infuriating. You are in your room or in the restaurant, but the sunbeds are occupied. Some leave at about seven in the morning. Moreover, these are not necessarily Russians. And the Poles and Bulgarians and Germans do this.
The hotel has animation. It didn't bother us too much. People were entertained both in the pool and on volleyball court. There is a kindergarten for children (6-12 years old) for two hours. Two children's swings on the beach. Children's playground on the other side of the hotel.
For a change, we sailed to Nessebar. A boat trip with the miracle captain cost us 25 leva per adult (round trip) and 10 per child. Just one way 15 per adult. Thirty minutes and you are on the peninsula of souvenir shops and restaurants.
The shuttle bus to Nessebar is number 8 and costs 4.5 leva.
Buses towards Burgas according to the schedule on the Bulgarian bus website of the Nessebar community. There are free trips five times a week to the Burgas MALL, we decided not to tempt fate.
In general, I enjoyed my stay.
The hotel is good!
I would especially like to highlight the lobby bar - I have never seen the best, brightest and most spacious! The drinks are expensive (but “You’re on vacation!”) The coffee is incomparable!

ALL the staff works EXCELLENTLY and it is not their fault for technical omissions and shortcomings.

The hotel is on the very first line, this is not our first time in Bulgaria and we know that even 5 Tereks have paid beaches, this hotel has its own beach, you don’t have to pay anything, there are always enough sun loungers, there are swimming pools. The rooms are very clean, the hotel itself is also very clean and has a design that I like. Almost all rooms have sea views. Everything is basically fine with the Internet. P... The food is good, but it’s true that there is no all-inclusive, there is tea and juice for breakfast, but for lunch and dinner you have to buy everything, there is also enough food for children.

We chose the Zornitsa Hotel based on unreasonably high ratings and subjective reviews. And they made a mistake - the reality was very disappointing.

The most unpleasant thing is the coast, which is completely unsuitable for swimming, sunbathing, or relaxing with a child. It is almost impossible to enter the water - impenetrable thickets of slippery algae and huge silty rocks... all over the bottom. The water near the shore resembles a muddy swamp. The beach sand is all littered (not once in 2 weeks have we seen any cleaning done on the beach!). Umbrellas and trestle beds are literally right next to each other, and there are only half as many people willing to occupy them. The question is, what can you do on the beach if there is nowhere to lie down and it is impossible to swim?? All that's left to do is leave. The question is - where!?

The hotel does not have a territory as such. All that is near the building is an ever-crowded swimming pool and a primitive playground under the scorching sun. Tired of such a vacation, we quietly began to make our way to the territory of neighboring hotels, where there was much more space and comfort in all respects - green areas for walks, cozy benches/gazebos, and entertainment for children... But this, again, is the territory another hotel, and strangers are not welcome there.

The food is, to put it mildly, not for everyone. On the one hand, the buffet is quite extensive, but the cuisine is very specific. Everything is fatty, spicy, deep fried. Sweets are buried in creams stuffed with brutal dyes. Dietary - nothing! Except fruit.

On top of everything else, the Soviet legacy has a strong impact: the staff is sluggish, unfriendly, everything is somehow a blunder, with reluctance.

The only thing I have no complaints about is the hotel building: clean, well-maintained, beautiful interiors. In fairness, it should be noted that there is amazing sound insulation between the rooms. Not a sound, not a rustle from the neighbors!! Considering huge amount Small children, of course, are a huge plus. But, unfortunately, he is also the only one.

I was vacationing with my daughters and grandson from August 23, 2018. Before the trip, I read a lot of negative reviews: either there weren’t enough watermelons (during meals, they changed the watermelons 5-6 times with me), or there wasn’t enough water for lunch or dinner (always on time exchange empty containers for full ones). then the staff is rude (no matter how many times you contact the reception or other staff, everything... when there is a smile on the lips and problems are solved within 5 minutes), then the food is monotonous (believe me, in 8 days I did not have time to try everything - there is such a variety of food). ALTHOUGH, WHO GOES HERE FOR WHAT PURPOSE. I PERSONALLY WENT TO VACATION, AND I WAS SUCCESSFUL. The grandson is delighted with the work of the animators. Every day there are different competitions.
The room is clean, spacious, excellent soundproofing; Towels were changed constantly, shampoos, shower gels, etc. were constantly updated. Wi-fi was also available in the room. and hall. and on the beach.
We had a great time. Yes, the entrance to the sea is rocky, but closer to the stones (breakwater) the bottom is clean, without stones, and both children and adults can swim, which many vacationers did. Out of curiosity, I explored the entrance to the sea of 4 hotels - the entrance and bottom are rocky - you can’t go in without special shoes, you can injure your feet. So this is not only a problem at the Zornitsa Sands Hotel

We vacationed with a child at the end of June 2017, no complaints at all. The weather was wonderful, not a single cloudy day. The rooms are clean, we lived on the third floor. Every room has a sea view. You can reach the floor by elevator. The service staff is responsive to any requests. The downside is the rocky entrance to the sea, but this has nothing to do with the hotel. ... If you go to the right of the hotel, there is a nice sandy entrance. By the way, there are always free sun loungers, even though we like to sleep late, we were never left without an umbrella. I usually don’t return to hotels again, but I think I’ll return to this proven option. Thanks to everyone who works there for our holiday!

Good afternoon) This year we vacationed with children at the Zornitza Sands hotel and we want to share our impressions) I liked everything very much, the hotel has a lot of everything you need for have a good rest: beautiful rooms, good service, and most importantly - cool entertainment for children)) I think everyone wants their kids to explore the world and enjoy their childhood) The hotel has a very competent... suitable for children, everything is very thought out, there is a children's menu, entertainment, a mini club for children from 4 to 12 years old, there are very cool animators and teachers, the children were delighted)) My husband and I were able to go to the SPA, sauna) We also liked the food , a lot of different food, especially delicious local. I fell in love with the bean soup, banitsa and tarator, sooo delicious)) The hotel area is beautiful, everything is cleaned and well maintained) We had a view of the sea, incredibly cool) The beach is right next to the hotel, hot sand, pebbles, sunbeds) Overall we were satisfied with our vacation ) We advise all families to fly here with their kids)

We stayed at this hotel three times: 2 times in 2015 (June, September) + July 2016.
in short: the hotel is a solid 4*, 5* is still far away. the rooms are good, cleaned every day. The food is excellent, the kids loved it. By the way, the senior waiter (hall administrator) worked in Ivan Frankovsk in a restaurant complex.
The beach is your own, when you go into the water you need to be very careful - h... a lot of stones.
animators in 2015 - excellent evening performances for both children and adults, in 2016 - they suck, stupid scenes targeting only Russians, although this hotel has min. 50% loading Ukrainian. tourists.

2016 - mass poisoning of children with water from the pool; there was a line to see the doctor (who has an office on the hotel premises). I DO NOT recommend swimming in the pool.
own secure parking for cars. Comfortable. But on the last day (night) at the hotel, our car was scratched. I won’t blame the hotel staff here, you can’t keep track of everything

The hotel is located in the northern part of Sunny Beach, Elenite.
The tour operator presented it as 4*, the hotel itself declares itself to be 5*. The rooms are comfortable, all with some degree of sea view. For us, a family with 2 children aged 10, silence, proximity to the sea and quality food were important. Everything was there: the hotel is a beach hotel, but the beach is small, the entry into the sea is inconvenient if it’s a little stormy, ... you won't come in. The food is delicious.
Of the minuses: weak animation, nowhere to walk, since all the areas around are private; check-in is slow (we waited after a long journey from 7 am to 3:30 pm) even if there was availability free seats, the staff is friendly, but very slow
collapse

The rooms are good and clean. Cleaned every day. Not a bad holiday, but I can’t say that this hotel is 5* in every way
Breakfast is monotonous and drinks - only tea, coffee and juices for breakfast, lunch and dinner - only water from the cooler, and you have to pay for everything else. And you have to go to breakfast early, and then it’s difficult to find a free table. There is nowhere near the hotel... leave, went by bus to Sunny Beach and Nessebar. The worst thing is that the whole beach is covered in stones and the service - all requests were answered with refusal or what was not included in the price and you had to pay extra. They are always nervous, as if something is stopping them from working, and there was a girl who was yelling and driving the representatives of travel agencies away (our representative tried several times to leave a note when they picked us up for the return transfer, in the end he called the room back and informed us of the departure time) .
In general, I won't go again.

We were treated to a small, but very friendly family. There were four of us - mom, tato, son -7 rocks and one-year-old daughter. We traveled to Bulgaria by road transport, and booked a hotel through the agency of Maria Drapata in Chernivtsi. Before speaking, we thank them for their assistance in organizing our recovery. Everything is in telephone and online mode, clearly, so... exactly, so trimati! And now about ZORNITSA SANDS. UPON ARRIVAL, WE WERE ALLOWED TO THE ROOM. The assistants at the reception helped with speeches. The room is clean, tidy, and there is a balcony overlooking the inner door - where the kitchen is. We, of course, turned our noses - “Give me another one,” and at the reception - “No!” And we em - “No, well, there’s no need.” In fact, you can see the sea from the kitchen - it doesn’t stink, but smells. And then we realized that for all the variety of adventures, the frequency of living with hedgehogs, the proximity to the sea, the wide, clean beach, the warm spring sun, we had that view from the balcony without any difference. Now let’s talk about the sheer volume of excitement - the whole day is filled with excitement, whether it’s yoga, aqua aerobics, darts, water polo, volleyball, a program show, or a children’s disco. As soon as the food is eaten, it is delicious, all the sieves, the gods, the hope, brought home kilograms of food. And the Bulgarian fun with their national discoveries is super! And the Mediterranean evening is filled with a variety of seafood. And how delicious the pizza is, it’s frosty - this is the commentary of the little son of seven fates. And a wide selection of meat herbs, vegetables and fruits - everything in sufficient quantity, fresh, aromatic. From confectionery products - dough, oven, and, most importantly, savory baklava. A small donut and porridge with milk, and soup for lunch. The restaurant is clean and tidy, the staff is friendly and funny. Her chef, looking very impressive, gave the restaurant a brand name, just as respectable and welcoming. The beach is clean, tidy up, parasols and sunbeds, towels are all in sight. A child's cutie is the same as Rozmov, the girls and boys are experts in their field, their approach is to the skin of the child. The best among them is Gabriela from Gabrovo. What a great hello! The pools are clean and sized for both adults and children. The inner door of the hotel is a quiet little nook with sofas and poufs, a fountain and a chaise lounge. We are here with a little bit of post-mortem repairs. They served a child's maidan with a drink, goydalki and a carousel. Our car has been parked all day in the hotel parking lot, shaded between the trees. Dorechi, I charge parking for 12 levs, which adds up to more than 60 UAH per piece. Axis like this. Take a walk around the village. Entrust a hotel with a great territory - Royal Park Victoria. If you really wanted to be among people, then you walked there. Ale completely lost his gothel. In the lobby bar there is WI-FI, kava, tea, alcohol, TV. As soon as the room was tidied, the bed linen was changed, the towels were clean, and they kindly reported if they were pleased. I tidying lady 2 levs for tip.
Taking a risk under my creation, I can firmly say that once again we will spend on such an economically priced price for a tour to this hotel, let’s go both ways. , women from pots and pans, man from the annoying, unlocked telephone dialers, children from the renaissance (before the speech, so swimming, stripping, running, that the computer with the TV is not enough, if you remember). Well, for our youngest princess, this is the greatest proof of the sea coast that has passed so far away. Follow the fix, the positive attitude, the enemies.

Lovely, great hotel.
We arrived at 15.25, our rooms were already ready - the first impression, as already mentioned, was a wonderful aroma in the hotel. Smiling and well-mannered staff - I don’t know who was rude there (it is quite possible that this was already an extreme reaction to the rudeness and bad manners of the guests).
Regarding nutrition - a huge variety of... jars, vegetables and fruits, dairy and fermented milk products. People, do you have 5 types of meat dishes for dinner every day? What kind of claims, I don’t understand.
The animation is talented, fun, beautiful. The child is delighted, and so are we.
Yes, the entrance to the sea is rocky with shellfish on top. But this can be solved. Firstly, the bottom is visible and you can walk around the stone, or walk a couple of meters to the sandy entrance to the water. And there is a third option - swimming shoes, which cost only 15 leva. You’ll probably spend more on souvenirs, so why spread the negativity about this? The negative will attract the bad, and if you are friendly, they will treat you the same way. The pool was cleaned every evening - what kind of lie is it, about 2 times a week??????Why make this up????
In general, I advise you to go to Zarnitsa.
P.S. the last recommendation is a walk to Nessebar by sea with captain Ichthyander. You won't regret it! ;)

First, about Elenite himself. Some people think it is.
First, about Elenite himself. Some people think it's a resort. Maybe they're right. The devil knows what a resort really is, but we saw with our own eyes that Elenite is, first and foremost, a hole. Elenite is a cluster of hotels, a pub and a bus/taxi stop surrounded by luxurious construction waste dumps. Nothing more.

When applied to Zornitza Sands, this simply means Shushenskoe Lights. Let's consider four possible directions for a walk. The south is the sea, we will talk about it separately below. North – construction waste and the aforementioned pubs/bus/taxi. East - Royal Park Hotel, the beach of which is prohibited because it is all inclusive. West – 400 meters along the concrete wall + 400 meters along Paradise Beach Beach (hotel for Germans) + 100 meters of narrow strip of sand along a cliff, ending with a cliff going into the sea. There are still walks around the hotel, and tourists are free not to hold their hands behind their backs and not look at the ground.

However, if you do not take into account the financial/organizational inconveniences, you can expand your area using a taxi/bus; the first one to St. Vlas costs 10 leva (5 euros), and to Sl. Shores – 20 leva (then you do the math yourself). We didn’t take the bus, because it doesn’t run often, and a half-hour wait at a landfill under the hellish sun was not part of our program of activities.

In application to Zornitza Sands, this means that take a taxi on the first day, go to St. Vlas and load up on beer, juices, cola or whatever you are going to catch up with, because the prices in the bar (including the minibar in room) and restaurant are large even by coastal standards. A taxi ride will cost 20 leva, so even if you go out and buy supplies for only 20 leva, you will not be left out. But it’s better to pack fatter. For reference, prices from the bar: fresh juice – 7 leva (2.5 in Nessebar), bottle of Becks 0.3 – 3 leva (1.20 in St. Vlas).

So we discussed walking and drinking. What else were we going to do in Bulgaria? Swim in the sea, eat Bulgarian dishes and go on fun excursions.

How will Zornitza Sands answer our simple requests? There is definitely a sea there. It is close, so when the balcony is open you can’t hear the radio in the room at all (however, this is good, because there is no other way not to hear it). Unfortunately, it’s practically impossible to enter it because of the stones. The stones in this area are fragile, so there are a lot of sharp chips. Entering the sea in a churned-up opaque slurry over slippery sharp stones is truly unforgettable. Afterwards, you bathe until you are exhausted, realizing that after the exit procedure you will not decide to bathe again soon. There is a secret: if you enter not from the sandy beach, but from a heap of stones and debris near the right wing of the hotel, then you can never cut yourself or knock out your fingers. But this is only in good weather. If there is a little anxiety, then you need to come to terms with the injury in advance. Otherwise use the pool. It is large and comfortable, although, as expected, it is chlorinated.

You won't be spoiled for choice with Bulgarian dishes either. The kitchen is boring and gets boring very quickly. Especially breakfast. But for breakfast they provide free coffee and tea (they tend to run out towards the end of breakfast). For dinner, these benefits of colonial conquests will already cost 2.5 and 1.5 leva, respectively.

Excursions have nothing to do with the hotel, but one cannot fail to mention the “Bulgarian Village”, to which people flock from all over the coast. The excursion consists of eating, drinking and seeing. You won't be able to eat there especially, because it's stale, tasteless and bad. It’s also difficult to drink because wine is colored tap water. Local sake - rakia - a peaceful weak moonshine, which, however, the Anglo-Saxons drink until they lose their pulse. But it’s interesting to watch and listen to folk dances and songs. We really didn’t expect that this Soviet-era obligation could be so interesting. Bulgarian folk music is, in any case, the ancestor of jazz and it is played there well and live. There are a couple more numbers in the program - a magician and strange comedians-transvestites, but in terms of the degree of destruction in the brain they can only be compared with Petrosyan's benefit performance ten times repeated. The Aunt Walking on Coals (the apotheosis of the entire program) left a positive impression: very high-quality quackery with an appropriate, but not entirely appropriate, religious pathos. However, I wouldn’t run after my aunt through the coals, and it’s not about the aunt, but about the coals. Although at my aunt’s too.. However, we digress from the hotel.

What else can you say about the hotel? It has central air conditioning, which is good, but we hardly used it because when there are no mosquitoes, it is more pleasant to sleep with the balcony open. The hotel has many halls, it’s not even clear why there are so many, but apparently they require four stars.

The agency will probably tell you that the hotel is new. What follows from this, we found out on the spot. What follows from this is that things break down quickly, and the rules change on the fly. During our week-long stay, our balcony door broke, our key card broke, and there was a serious leak from under the bathroom. They fixed our door, replaced the key, but didn’t care about the leaking bathroom. We also didn’t bother ourselves too much: let them spit until a puddle appears on the floor below. The rules of residence are changing before our eyes. Over the course of a week, dinner was reduced by half an hour (on the very day when we decided to drive to the cliff to take photos at sunset) and sun loungers by the sea became paid - 10 leva per day. The thing with the sun loungers was completely evil, because the fundraiser turned the collection procedure in his own way: “Are you kind, Russians? Then pay 10 leva for the sun lounger.” We rashly understood this as discrimination on the basis of nationality and took the appropriate position (approximately as in the joke about the exam at the Institute of International Relations, where it was proposed to write a response to a note from an African state whose tanker was sunk by our submarine). Later it turned out that a) the sun loungers by the pool remain free for hotel guests and b) the collector was simply a polyglot, so he politely clarified the language in which the interlocutor was more comfortable communicating, and then calmly spoke in Bulgarian. But the mood was completely ruined.

By the way, they are all polyglots there, but they know little of the generally accepted languages of regional significance (English, Russian, German). Many obviously have no experience working in hotels/restaurants either. In a restaurant, for example, tables are not assigned to specific waiters, so the waiters are constantly running around aimlessly and, in a fit of zeal, trying to collect used dishes from the table. Often you have to fend off uneaten dishes from them. The bellhops are also kind of crazy, but cunning. All mistakes regarding the consumption in the minibar were not made in our favor. One day, in broad daylight, without knocking or special ceremony, the head of the bellhops burst into the room with her key, and at a rather interesting moment in the life of a married couple. This made her very angry, so much so that I even yelled at her.

In short, I'm tired of these memoirs. I hope you got the information you came here for. The conclusion is this: a simple holiday for unpretentious tourists. Swimming in the pool and lying on a sun lounger are the only entertainment in this dull place.

I want to write a truthful review about the hotel for those who are still choosing a place to stay and perhaps warn against our mistakes. We were vacationing with a 4-year-old child, and based on this we were looking for a hotel with 3 meals a day and animation. We chose this hotel based on its high rating, which, unfortunately, turned out to be completely unfounded and not clear what it consisted of. The hotel does not have a territory as such, which cannot be understood from the hotel description and photographs. There is a very small courtyard where during the daytime you can escape the heat and sit in the shade. There is a children's playground where you can play until 10 am or in the evening, during the day there is scorching sun. There is absolutely no place for a child to go for a walk or ride a scooter. The hotel has its own beach with sun loungers and umbrellas and a so-called “paid area” withshort-term tents that can be booked for 30 leva per day / Friday-Sunday 40 leva On public beach The place was occupied at 7.30 in the morning, no one cleans the sand, there are a lot of cigarette butts, the sunbeds are mostly dirty and torn. Several times during our vacation, early in the morning, other people occupied the occupied sunbeds with things and towels set aside, we found our things piled up by the pool, and when asked by the beach workers “show me where to sit with a child??”, they threw up their hands. From Friday to Sunday it’s completely Armageddon, given the already catastrophic situation with places on the beach, the hotel rents out sun loungers to outside tourists vacationing in nearby apartments for an additional fee. fee. No comments. In the so-called “paid zone” the mattress covers are stained, the pillows are without pillowcases, it is also unclear by whom and when they are cleaned; paying for such a “tent” is a joke. Cups of morning coffee stood in the scorching sun until the evening, unnoticed and not removed by anyone. The entrance to the sea is rocky, it is problematic to enter without shoes, and only one place on the beach is sandy, so all the people who live in the hotel swim there at the same time. By the way, I haven’t seen so many people on the beach and in the sea for a long time, there’s nowhere for an apple to fall. The sea is dirty, shallow, there is a huge amount of algae near the shore, you come out of the water like a merman. In general, there is no desire to either swim or be on this beach. WiFi does not work almost anywhere on the hotel premises, including the so-called “paid area”, restaurant and bars. The food in the hotel restaurant is a no-frills buffet. Heavy (a lot of fried, fatty food), monotonous (breakfast is carbon copy, lunch and dinner are a little more varied), food trays are open and the food gets cold and chapped. There are not always free tables in the restaurant; several times we waited at the entrance for 20 minutes or left and returned later, because there was nowhere to sit. Water, alcohol, coffee - for an additional fee. In the restaurant, you can collect water yourself from the cooler during restaurant hours; there is no water on the tables. They don’t change the tablecloths, they just sweep away the rubbish from the tables and wipe up local stains, dirty plates were often carried away themselves to free up space on the table, the waitresses are lethargic with sour faces. Room cleaning is mediocre; the bathroom floor was downright dirty upon check-in. After contacting the reception with a request to clean the room, a disgruntled cleaning lady appeared trying to express her indignation in Bulgarian. The animation is probably not bad, but for Bulgarian-speaking children. We went to the mini-club several times...they glanced at me and my son and when they saw that we were speaking Russian, they lost interest in us and didn’t pay any more attention. Toys, carpet on the floor in the playroom of questionable cleanliness. In the evenings, the children were entertained with a half-hour mini-disco and that, in general, was where the animation ended for us. There is nowhere to go with a small child; next to the hotel there is a Luna Park with old and dirty attractions, a bunch of souvenir shops and nothing else. We went for a walk to Nessebar (you can get there by taxi for 30 leva, half an hour’s drive) and to the territory of neighboring hotels in the closed territory of Elenite (we entered through the beach). In general, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone or Bulgaria as a resort in general; for us this vacation turned out to be a largely negative experience, disappointment and surprise.
