The lowest points on earth above sea level. Find out where the lowest point on earth is. Dead Sea in numbers

We invite you to look at the world from the lowest points of the Earth - and there are such places on every continent, they are located much below sea level. In this collection I will tell you about seven such places.

There are many places on the planet where you are standing on dry land, while the level of the world's oceans suggests that you are actually submerged under water. Let's start with the Dead Sea in Asia. It is also called Salty sea, it is located between Palestine, Israel and Jordan. Its shores and surface are located at 422 meters below sea level. This is the most low area sushi on earth

Next comes Lake Assal in Africa, it is located in Djibouti, Ethiopia. The lake lies 155 meters below sea level in the Afar Lowland. This is the lowest landmass in Africa and the second on Earth after the Dead Sea. The water here is one of the saltiest in the world - 34.8% salt concentration, which is higher than the concentration in the Dead Sea and ten times the salinity level in the ocean

There is a place in Antarctica called the Vestfold Hills, which is located 50 meters below sea level. For your information, the most deep place on Earth, not covered by liquid water - the Bentley Deep in Antarctica with a depth of 2555 meters below sea level. The depression is covered with a huge layer of ice. The deepest place on Earth covered with liquid water is the Mariana Trench.

There are similar places in North America. Death Valley is a desert located in the southwestern United States. Located within the Mojave Desert, the intermontane trench is the lowest, driest, and hottest place in the Americas. A site called Badwater in Death Valley is the most... low place in the USA, 86 meters below sea level. Surprisingly, this point is only 76 miles east of Mount Whitney, the highest point at 4,422 meters. Death Valley is also considered to be home to some of the hottest temperatures on Earth, with Furnace Creek reaching 56.7°C on July 13, 1913. Only higher is the world record of 58°, recorded in Libya on September 13, 1922

IN South America Laguna Del Carbon is located with a depth of 105 meters below sea level. Laguna del Carbon (Coal Lagoon) is salt lake and is located in Argentina. It is the lowest point in the Western and Southern Hemispheres and the seventh lowest point on Earth. Pay attention to the quality of the road surface in the Argentine desert...

The lowest point in Europe is the Caspian Sea. Its basin area is 371,000 km2, which is about 10 percent of the world's closed water basin area. The ancient inhabitants considered the Caspian Sea an ocean, probably due to its salinity and apparent immensity. The sea is a closed lake, and the water in it is salty, with an average salinity of 1.2%. This is the lowest place in Europe with a depth of 28 meters below the level

We visited each of the continents, only Australia remained. There is such a place here too - Lake Eyre is the lowest point in Australia at a depth of 15 meters below sea level in the very center of the huge Eyre Basin, the big lake Australia

It is difficult to determine from photographs, but almost everywhere the ocean was at least 20 meters higher than the point where the photographer stood... Isn’t it amazing that such places exist on Earth?

There are many unique natural sites in the world. Of course, like every person, I would dream of seeing them all, and therefore I could not ignore the place that I want to talk about in this essay. Moreover, it is unique in several of its parameters. Firstly, this lake has no analogues in terms of water composition, and secondly, the shores of this lake are the lowest point of land on the planet.

As you might have guessed, we are talking about the Dead Sea. In fact, it is not a sea, but a lake belonging to the class of hypersaline lakes. There are not so many bodies of water with such a concentration of salts on the planet, and the composition of the salts is, moreover, unique. The shores of the Dead Sea belong to two countries: Israel and Jordan. I was lucky enough to visit the Israeli side.

Despite the fact that the coastal area is densely built up, the landscape is rather dull. The lack of fresh water is taking its toll.

We stayed at the Le Meridien hotel and really enjoyed it. No, I was not paid for advertising. :)

The uniqueness of the water composition is due to the fact that the lake was formed on the site of the Syrian-African fault, as a result of which outputs of various minerals enter the water. Unlike other hypersaline lakes, the salt composition of the Dead Sea is more diverse and has a higher content of bromides and iodides. It is believed that its water has a number of medicinal properties, and therefore there are hotels on the shores where people who come from all over the world stay to improve their health.

Almost all hotels have pools with Dead Sea water.

Since many disabled people come for treatment, most hotels offer services for people with disabilities.

Since the lake itself is located on a fault site, its shores are located significantly below sea level, and are the lowest point on land, in some places dropping to 420 meters below sea level. Considering that the fault continues to deepen, this value changes by -1 m year.

You cannot swim in the Dead Sea for a long time, so many hotels have fresh water pools.

Due to the high salinity, it is almost impossible to drown; this is not shallow water; people actually lie on the water.

The feeling when you enter the water is quite unusual - it’s as if you are walking not on water, but on oil, or on a thick viscous substance that elastically resists when exposed. The water in the Dead Sea is more than 8 times more salty than ocean water, and tastes acrid and bitter (yes, I tried a couple of drops). You cannot stay in it for a long time, as the beneficial effect develops into a harmful one. Recommended time is 5-10 minutes. Tourists who come to the lake for one day will not be cured of anything, of course. To get a significant effect, you need to live on the shore for at least a couple of weeks, taking the procedures daily. However, if you are not sick, then it is better not to relax in these places, because the entertainment infrastructure is not developed, and there is nothing but desert around. As for indications, Dead Sea water is especially often prescribed to people with skin diseases, psoriasis or eczema.

Real name highest mountain on Earth located in the Himalayan mountain system, sounds like Chomolungma. This peak rises to 8848 meters: no other mountain in the world exceeds this mark.

Even the second peak of the double-headed Everest breaks all records - 8760 meters above sea level.

Rank highest point In the world, the mountain was assigned only in the middle of the 19th century, when Radhanath Sikdar, an employee of the Indian geodetic service, measured its height. Since by that time no such thing was known high peak, Chomolungma received this title. Subsequently, the size of the mountain was refined: with each subsequent, more accurate and accurate measurement, Everest turned out to be even larger.

The latest results of the Italian geologist and the American expedition (8850 and 8872) were not officially recognized.

Thanks to its honorary title, the mountain attracts many extreme sports enthusiasts who challenge the harsh nature. Every year, several hundred people attempt to climb Everest, but not everyone succeeds: the harsh conditions present a difficult challenge even for the most trained climbers, many of whom ended their lives on the slopes of the world's highest mountain.

Mariana Trench

Mariana Trench, also known as Mariana Trench, is the lowest point on the surface of the earth's crust. This chute is located in Pacific Ocean, in its western part, near Mariana Islands. This is a long depression that at its lowest point, known as the Challenger Deep, is about 11,000 meters below sea level.

The Mariana Trench was discovered in 1875, and its depth was measured at the same time. At that time, the instruments were not very accurate and showed a result of 8,367 meters (perhaps the measurements were not carried out in the most deep point). In the middle of the 20th century, an English expedition established a maximum depth of 10,863 meters, and a little later these dimensions were clarified by a Soviet expedition, which provided a result of 11,023 meters.

The Mariana Trench is an amazing formation. At its bottom there are real mountain ranges, which formed hundreds of millions of years ago. In 1960, the first dive to the bottom of the trench was made on the bathyscaphe Trieste. After this, only two dives followed; one of the daredevils was the famous director James Cameron.

The lowest point on land is near Dead Sea on the border between Israel and Jordan. This region is located 399 meters below sea level.
