TRANSPORT IN BUDAPEST

Almost all types of public transport are available in Budapest: buses, trolleybuses, trams, metro. From unique species transport communication It's worth mentioning the gear railway and a funicular.

There are more than two hundred operating in the city bus routes. The main routes have only numbering in their names. During peak hours, additional buses with the letter “A” after the number leave the city streets. Here you can also find express buses, designated by the letter “E”. They usually stop only at final points. The schedule and routes of city buses can be found on the BKV website.

The tram service of modern Budapest consists of thirty lines running through the entire city. The first trams appeared here in the middle of the 19th century. Today it is the busiest mode of transport in the Hungarian capital. The service interval of city trams is about 10 minutes. Information about city tram lines is available on the Bkv.hu website.

There are also fifteen trolleybus routes in Budapest ( detailed information about them can be found on the corresponding page of the Bkv.hu website. Ground public transport operating hours are from 4.30 to 23.00. Peculiarity transport system the Hungarian capital is incredibly punctual: the schedule posted at the stops strictly coincides with the actual schedule of buses, trolleybuses and trams.

Budapest Metro

Budapest has one of the oldest metro systems in the world. There are currently three metro lines in operation and construction of a fourth is underway. Most of the metro stations are located on the left bank of the Danube - in Pest. The train interval is, depending on the time of day, from 2 to 15 minutes.

A one-day travel ticket for all types of transport with no limit on the number of trips. Such a ticket currently costs 1,650 Hungarian forints (HUF);

Single pass for three days costs 4150 HUF;

A single seven-day pass costs 4,950 HUF.

Public transport Budapest has the most convenient public transport I have ever encountered. Even the Stockholm one is much inferior to it. But there is one thing: in order to appreciate what its convenience is, you need to know how to use it and where to look for these same conveniences.

I thought that I was ready for anything, because there were countless reports written about the city’s public transport... As a result, I sent a ray of hatred to all the authors of the reports that I read. For some reason, everyone wrote that you need to press a button and the door will open, but what if it doesn’t open?? If you are alone at a stop, a bus comes and stops, you press the button, but the door DOES NOT OPEN! The driver yells obscenities at you, you become hysterical and you run away to get back to the next bus. The next one comes, but the door does not open!! And by the way, the driver doesn’t actually yell obscenities at you, he explains to the idiot what to do, but in Hungarian. He cannot wait, because... the schedule must be followed and he thinks that sooner or later the idiot will figure it out.

Moreover, such situations occur often. I encountered this every day, usually early in the morning.

It’s just that on some flights they only launch through the front door, because... check availability of ticket. The ticket or travel pass must be shown to the driver. Therefore, if the door does not open, then you need to go to the driver, if everyone enters through the front door, then you need to go with everyone and be sure to show your ticket to the driver in the window.

About tickets

There are a great many types of tickets. The most basic: one-time ticket - 350 forints (450 if the driver has it), a block of 10 tickets - 3000 forints, a day pass - 1650 forints (3300 for a group of up to 5 people), passes for 2, 3, 7, 15 days and a month. full list with prices.
Tickets of all types can be purchased from the machine, having previously selected the Russian language there. So I don't think there will be any problems. 15-day and monthly passes are personalized and must include your name or passport number. They can also be driven into the machine. But there is no ticket for 15 days (or it is hidden somewhere), and entering data takes a long time, so it is better to buy them from the cashiers. I bought it at the airport. A 15-day pass costs 6,300 forints and paid for itself in the first days.

Tickets must be validated! In addition to travel cards. On the 1-day pass you need to make a mark with a pen. We got on the bus and went straight to the yellow validator, it’s better not to hesitate. There are a lot of controllers. In the metro they stand at the escalators and check everyone's tickets. Just show your ticket and go through. However, this does not mean that there will be no further controllers. There will be more. I witnessed how controllers removed a group of Chinese (7-8 people) from the tram who had not validated their tickets. The Chinese were shouting in Chinese, but judging by the faces of the controllers, it was clear that everyone would be fined!

The website even has photos of stamped tickets so that people know what they look like after the procedure.

With 15-day and monthly passes, you need to have your passport with you.

Metro

I used the metro very rarely, because... ground transport I like it better: you don’t have to go up and down, and the view from the window is interesting.

The metro in Budapest is different: from ancient to modern. From Wikipedia: One of the oldest subways in the world, the first subway (not counting the Istanbul Tunel) in continental Europe.

It consists of four lines - the old one and three new ones - three of which intersect at the interchange station "Deák Ferenc ter" ("Deák Ferenc Square"). The total length of the lines is 37.6 km, 52 stations. The metro carries an average of 1,200,000 people on a working day.

Line 3 is currently being repaired and is completely closed on weekends, but buses operate along the route. And one after another, so there are no problems.

BKK transport app.

The most convenient transport app! After it, using the Prague, Stockholm, Moscow is a complete pain... Everything is taken into account, it’s easy to use, you just need the Internet.

The map shows all stops and driving directions.

Down to the second, it is noted when the previous one left and when the next one will arrive.

You can watch the bus (for example) driving. If he is delayed somewhere, the time automatically changes.

It's easy to plan your route. The location is clearly defined, but you can enter it arbitrarily.

You can set right time and take into account many other parameters.

Choose the most convenient route.

The navigator is excellent. Will take you to the desired point without any problems. By the way, I also used this application simply as a navigator. Very detailed map, it is impossible to get lost even with a great desire.

All this is just a small part of the functions. The point is that everything is under control. And special thanks for the competent routes. In Moscow, planning routes is a pain. I remember how I tried to make a route from the hotel to Yaroslavsky railway station, but he gave only one option, where he had to walk 800 m. Moreover, the direct bus stop was right across the street from the hotel! But he stubbornly refused to plot the route that way. I even got to the bus stop and still...

How to log in and log out

Just press the buttons. You can press the button as soon as the bus leaves the previous stop. If there is a screen, then the STOP sign opposite the stop will light up or the buttons will light up green.

In the bus.

The best excursion routes- on trams along the Danube. You'll see everything!

On the tram.

And this is a brochure with maps and details. Compiled for tourists.

Public transport runs frequently. On average, the interval is 2-3 minutes, in the morning (4-5 am) and in the evening it reaches 20-30 on some, but not all routes.

I didn’t use night transport, but its network envelops almost the entire city. When I was going to the bus at night I saw several night ones. It’s good when you don’t have to worry about whether you’ll catch the last bus or not.

And I write everywhere here: bus, which means all types of transport.

I haven’t had a chance to use the river one yet, but people go for rides.

The Budapest metro cannot be called a landmark of the city - the stations are simple, without marble columns or crystal chandeliers. But this type of transport is convenient for moving around the Hungarian capital: tickets are inexpensive, there are final stops for buses, trams and trolleybuses near the stations, metro lines connect the stations. We offer mini-instructions on how to use the metro in the Hungarian capital.

The first trains depart at 4.30 am, the last at 23.00. If you are in the center of Budapest and want to get to the airport in time for the first flight to Moscow of Wizz Air at 06:40, then you can use the metro, but you need to arrive at the first train. During the first and last hours of the metro's operation, trains run rarely, once every 10-15 minutes.

You can find out the schedule of each type of public transport for each stop/station and plan your route.

The road from the center, for example, from Deák Ferenc tér (Deák Ferenc Square) to the final one on the blue line - Köbánya-Kispest will take 15-17 minutes. Bus 200E is already waiting for the first passengers and takes them to the airport in 20-30 minutes.

Budapest metro map 2019

At the beginning of 2019, there are 4 subway lines - yellow (1), red (2), blue (3) (in this moment under reconstruction), green (4). The main part of the stations is in Pest.

You can buy a Budapest metro card at the airport at the information desk or at kiosks with the letters BKK at stops, or at newspaper stands. But you don’t have to spend money on it - print it from the Internet. Maps are also on the board at the entrance to each station, just like in the Russian metro.

The new carriages contain electronic scoreboard with names, stations are announced in Hungarian. The Hungarian language is difficult to understand by ear at first, but then it’s easier to navigate through the advertisements.

Fare: buy tickets profitably

You won’t have to think long about where and how to buy a metro ticket. The machines are located at the airport, train stations, metro stations, and transport interchanges. There are also cash registers with a cashier, but there are more machines. Cards and Hungarian cash are accepted for payment.

Old ticket machines do not always have a Russian-language interface, but in new ones you can select a menu in Russian. The machines sell any tickets except personalized travel passes for a long period, since they are filled out at the box office using a personal document with a photo.

The travel ticket system allows you to save money on trips around the city - the tickets are the same for any transport. The price of one is 350 forints (~80 rubles) if you buy it from a machine or a ticket office, and 450 forints (~100 rubles) if you buy it from the driver on a bus or trolleybus. If you only need to go to the airport, then buy a special ticket with the possibility of a transfer (Transfer Ticket) for 530 forints (~120 rubles).

It is beneficial for tourists to purchase:

  • 10 tickets in one block for 3,000 forints (~700 rubles);
  • A 1-day pass costs 1,650 forints (~380 rubles). When purchasing, you select the start time and travel by any public transport without restrictions. The ticket is also good because on weekdays it is valid for river buses plying the Danube;
  • A great option for a group or a large family is a 24-hour group ticket. Five people can ride as many times as they want during the day for 3,300 forints (~760 rubles).

The cost of other types of tickets (passes for a week, month, etc.) can be viewed.

How to use tickets

When entering the Budapest metro, passengers only validate single tickets; to do this, a paper ticket is inserted into a hole where it is automatically punched.

Validators in the metro are not difficult to find - they are located in the lobby or near the escalator. As for travel cards, they are simply shown to the driver or inspector.

You can walk past the composter, there are no turnstiles, but during peak traffic times there are very attentive people in uniform at the entrance, and at the exit from the metro, fares are checked almost 100%.

The Ministry of Transport of Budapest made a detailed video about how to compost correctly:

Hungarian and EU pensioners over 65 years old travel for free, but older tourists from other countries buy tickets on a general basis.

The fine for traveling as a hare is 16,000 forints (almost 50 euros). When paying to the controller on the spot, the amount is reduced to 8,000 thousand and a receipt is issued.

When is the best time to buy

A tourist card for 24, 48 or 72 hours with free travel and discounts on visiting attractions will pay for itself if you use it to visit at least 3-4 museums, the Lukacs baths and use walking tour with an English-speaking guide. Plus the card - together with the parent, a child under 14 years old receives one Budapest Card for free travel, discounts and benefits.

For those who prefer walking around the city and sitting in restaurants, it will be cheaper to buy a metro ticket when needed.

You can see the price and buy a Budapest Card. It must be said that this card is quite inexpensive compared to similar cards in other European capitals.

How to get to the main tourist sites by metro

There is a separate detailed article about using the metro.

By taking the Budapest metro you can quickly get to the capital's stations: on the red line - to the South (Déli) and East (Keleti), on the yellow - to the West.

The historical line M1 is laid under Andrássy Avenue (Andrássy út). Its length is less than 5 km, and the stations are located at a distance of 500 m from each other. It is better to walk along the avenue to Heroes Square; there are many interesting shops along the way. Then you can relax in or go to the zoo - all these facilities are near the Széchenyi Furdo station. Városliget Park and Vajdahunyad Castle are also located there. After this whole program, you won’t have the strength to walk back along Andrássy; it’s convenient to go back by metro.

To get to the town of Szentendre, take the green line to the final line – Batthyány tér on the Buda side and change to the HEV train.

If you want to stay close to the main attractions in the very center, then focus on the Ferenc Deak Square station.

A few facts about the Budapest metro

  • The 1896 Földalatti line (now M1) is one of the first subways in Europe, older only than the London Underground;
  • The length of all 4 lines is 131 km, the longest is the blue one, the train travels along it for 31 minutes:
  • The 5th line was planned in 2017, but has not yet been built.

It is difficult to get lost in the metro of the Hungarian capital, but if this happens, then in the carriage or at the station they will always help you. Young people know English, and older people sometimes remember Russian.
