There are online boards everywhere with various information, the employees are smiling and helpful, especially when they see travelers with small children. Baggage is issued quickly and without delays.

The duty-free area at the airport is traditional - it offers well-known brands of alcohol, food and cigarettes.

Overview of airports on the island of Tenerife

Tenerife is the most large island Canary archipelago. Thanks to its excellent climate (Tenerife is called the “island eternal spring") there is a flow of tourists to local resorts all year round. Therefore, dozens of flights from all over the planet land on the island every day. In total, more than 13 million people pass through Tenerife airports every year. This article will focus on the island's air gates. We will look at the location of Tenerife airports, how to get to them, online displays and other points of interest to tourists.

On the island of Tenerife there are two airports on opposite sides. These are the northern and southern ends of the island. The distance between them is approximately 66-67 kilometers. You can get from one to the other via the expressway that connects the northern and southern part islands. To the south is the international airport of Tenerife South (in Spanish, Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur). It is also often called Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport. They land here international flights from the EU, USA and other countries. Flights from Russia and the CIS countries land at the same airport. The air harbor of Tenerife South passes through the bulk of tourists arriving on the island.

The second airport is located in the north of the island. It is called Tenerife Norte or Los Rodeos. It is located 15 kilometers from Santa Cruz de Tenerife (the capital of Tenerife). This airport mainly receives domestic flights from other cities in Spain. The location of Los Rodeos is not very good (it is located at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level) in terms of weather conditions. Flights are not accepted here at night and the airport is closed.

general information

Tenerife South Airport (El Aeropuerto Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia or Tenerife Sur) was opened on November 6, 1978 by Sofia, Queen of Spain. Since that time, the airport has handled about 10 million passengers. The first to “renew” the airport was flight IB187, which arrived from the island of Lanzarote. The need for an air harbor in Tenerife South matured back in the 1960s, since the northern airport of Los Rodeos could not cope with the increasing volume of air traffic.

Tenerife Sur is located in a municipality called Granadilla de Abona. The airport works with 150 carrier companies and is open 24 hours a day. Tenerife South is the main air gateway to Tenerife and the Canary Islands as a whole. The popular resort of Playa de Las Americas is 18 kilometers away, and the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is about 60 kilometers away.

Mostly planes land from Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Seville. Tourists from Russia who were flying with transfers through European cities arrive here.

In terms of service level, Tenerife North Airport is not inferior to Tenerife Sur, but is auxiliary on the island due to its unfortunate location. We rested in this hotel with my family in April 2016, our child was 1.3 years old. Overall, we really liked the hotel, despite the fact that we arrived early, at 8 in the morning, we were immediately checked into a room. We were accommodated on the 1st floor, explaining to us that higher up it would be inconvenient with a stroller, as there were no elevators. It turned out that the first floor was not only acceptable for us, but also very comfortable, there was no hassle with the stroller, in addition, the child liked to run on the grass near the balcony, of course, on the 2nd or other floors there would not have been such luxury, but this nuance turned out to be useful for us with baby. A baby cot was also immediately installed, and there are high chairs in the cafe. The room itself is very fresh and very cozy, all the furniture is in good condition, it was very pleasant to be in the room. Since we took a two-room apartment with a kitchen, let me clarify that the kitchenvery comfortable, there is a gas stove (two burners work, but no more is needed), a microwave, an electric kettle, a toaster, all the necessary utensils (cups, glasses, plates, pots, frying pan, spoons, forks, etc.), the only thing We bought our own knife, because it was impossible to use a local one. In general, we enjoyed cooking ourselves and visiting local cafes. We had breakfast and lunch at the hotel once, breakfast was 13 euros for two, lunch was the same (pay attention to the special menu, interesting offers), everything was quite acceptable and tasty, breakfast was a little weak, the coffee from the coffee machine was apparently powdered, but what more could you want from three rubles. Hotel by general impression rather pulls towards a solid four. The staff is friendly, no one understands Russian, but you can always explain yourself. Once, when we could not find understanding at the reception, the employee even let his wife, who speaks Russian, and we settled the issue. Evenings at the hotel live music and performances, the music was very pleasant, the hotel cafe was always filled with Europeans in the evenings. In general, the composition of vacationers at the hotel, and in Tenerife as a whole, is mainly Europeans, often of retirement age. Music until about 10-11, then everything calms down, we never heard drunken screams. Having read the previous review on this site, we were a little afraid to go, in fact the review is completely inappropriate, our windows and balcony faced the street, there were bars not far across the road, there was no noise, we didn’t hear it, neither at night, nor in the morning, at all silence! Regarding cleaning, after reading the reviews we were already ready that cleaning in hotels in Tenerife is not the best strong point, in fact, the quality of cleaning depended on who came to clean the room. One maid always cleaned the room well, remade the bed, always changed the towels, washed the floors, while others, as if depending on their mood, mostly swept the floors, the towels may not have been changed, they started throwing them on the floor and then, they could have changed, but they may not have changed , we came in and the towels continued to lie on the floor, but it was on a Sunday, perhaps they are not cleaned on Sundays. We noticed that many people do not work on Sundays, large shopping centers , supermarkets, some cafes and shops, even those near the embankment. The maids also don’t take tips, twice we returned to the room, and they had just finished cleaning our room and we gave a tip directly to the maid, took it and were grateful. We rested at a time when it was still cool in Tenerife, and in the rooms, too, we slept under blankets. The hotel has a good pool, there is a lot of greenery around, by the way, the pool warms up in the sun and it is quite possible to swim (for those for whom the ocean is cold), we do not like to sit in the hotel, so we swam in the pool only once. There is a children's pool, an adult pool is up to 2 m deep, so there is always a lifeguard nearby. When leaving, we left things in the luggage room, it’s free, it’s just that all tourists’ things are in one place. Scales, like everywhere else, are paid, 1 euro per suitcase. We bought groceries at the Superdino supermarket, not far from the hotel, the prices there were no worse than in Mercadona. We drove to Mercadona by car, you can walk there, about 20 minutes from the hotel, there is simply more choice there and you can buy fish or shrimp, and they will clean the fish in front of you (take a ticket for the queue). Dorado fish costs 7 euros per kg, sea bass is about the same, shrimp (huge) 10 euros per kg, not cheap for a resort where they all catch it, if you buy fish in a shop near the sea the price will be the same. Not far from the hotel there is a market, don’t be fooled by it, it’s mostly rubbish, more expensive than in the shops and no one bargains, but you can stop by for fun. The beach is about 20 minutes from the hotel on foot, but it’s nice to walk because the streets are very interesting, in general it didn’t bother us, we stayed in different hotels and near the beach and not so much, here we just walked more to the beach and back. We don’t recommend the beach near the port, it’s better to walk further, 5 minutes and you’ll find yourself on Las Vistas beach, very pleasant. The sand is not black, but rather mixed. The ocean at that time was cold, 19 degrees, but many were swimming, we just went in to freshen up, because the sun was baking like Afrin, from 12 to 4 be sure to use sunscreen. We rented a car, an office at the airport, cheaper than in offices at the resort. We traveled the whole island, including the volcano, there were a lot of impressions and emotions, Tenerife will be remembered for a long time, the nature is beautiful, we also visited Siam Park, a ticket for an adult is 34 euros, if you also buy a ticket to Loropark, then one ticket to Siam will cost 24 euros and the next a visit will cost 17 euros. We were not interested in Loropark, because the child was still small, but I really liked Siam Park, it was beautiful, the slides were cool, the lockers for depositing valuables turned out to be paid (! ), also keep in mind that according to the rules of the park, you are not allowed to bring your own food, but we still took everything of ours and no one approached us. The child and I went down the children's slides and played on artificial beach. We also visited the Siam mall, nothing outstanding, few shops, although we did make purchases in one, there were practically no discounts. Wi-Fi is available in cafes, although not in all. Sun loungers and umbrellas are paid, all for 4 euros. Baby food is sold, I bought it out of curiosity, our child did not eat, he only ate fruit, there is almost no baby milk. Children's livers were found in a pharmacy, and they also have baby food, who is interested. If you go to a time like ours, you need to be prepared for both heat and coolness; during the day we wore shorts and T-shirts, although sometimes we threw on sweaters, and in the evening and at night we wore jackets and jeans. It is also cool and windy in the mountains, so take jackets.

Transport options

There are 3 main ways to get from the airport to the desired point on the island: buses, taxis and rented cars.

Buses

The main type of public transport on the island is TITSA buses. The buses here are quite comfortable, equipped with air conditioning systems and spacious luggage compartments.

Bus routes connect Tenerife airport with the capital of the island, Santa Cruz, as well as popular resorts. The stop is located near the exit from the arrivals area and is marked with a green information board, which shows route numbers and schedules.

The bus stop is located near the exit from the arrivals area

The fare is paid directly to the driver upon boarding; you can pay either in cash or with a magnetic card. transport card Bono, which allows you to save from 30 to 50% of the tariff. The card can be purchased at the airport gift shop. The fare directly depends on the distance and ranges from 3 to 15 euros.

Route 111 covers the capital of the island of St. Croix and resort towns Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, route 343 links Southern and Northern airports, as well as Puerto de la Cruz and Los Cristianos. Bus number 450 goes from Costa Adeje station to San Isidro via Tenerife South Airport and Los Cristianos.

There is also night bus No. 711, operating on the route Santa Cruz - Sur Airport - Los Cristianos - Costa Adeje from 11 pm to 5 am.

Taxi from Tenerife airport

To those who don't love public transport, came with a large company or bulky luggage, the ideal option is a taxi, which can take you to any point on the island and drop off right at the hotel door. You can find a car in the airport parking lot or order it in advance for your arrival.

You can find a taxi in the parking lot or order it in advance online

The second option is undoubtedly preferable, since for free taxi drivers the fare may depend not only on the distance, but also on the time of day, time of year, day of the week, weather, and sometimes on what foot the individual got up from today.

When pre-ordering a taxi to Tenerife South Airport, the fare will be fixed and known in advance, so options with markups and trips in circles are excluded.

In addition, this is an ideal transfer method for those traveling with small children: when ordering a car, you can separately indicate the need for child seats. Finding an equipped car directly at the airport will be much more difficult, and Spanish laws regarding the transportation of children are quite strict.

Another advantage of online ordering is that there is no additional charge for a simple car at the airport: the service independently monitors the arrivals board and sends the car exactly for boarding. The driver will be waiting for passengers at the exit from the baggage claim area - you can identify him by the name plate in his hands.

You can find out more details about the service, check the current taxi fare from Tenerife South Airport to your hotel, or order a car using this link.

Car rental at Tenerife South Airport

Representatives of several car rental offices work in the terminal building of Tenerife South Airport, so you can register a car immediately upon arrival. However, this approach often leads to a significant increase in price.

This is explained by the fact that the car rental service in Tenerife, especially during the high season, is very popular - gasoline here is cheaper than in the rest of Europe, the roads are good and traveling around the island is easy and pleasant. The demand for budget cars confidently exceeds supply, and when planning to rent locally, you will have to choose from what is left.

In addition, rental companies skillfully hide the “pitfalls of contracts,” and many tenants learn about the “nuances” after signing the contract. This most often concerns insurance coverage, various restrictions on the use of the machine, rental of additional equipment, etc.

To avoid such surprises and save significant money, it is preferable to order a car as far in advance as possible and through a large price comparison service (Rentalcars is the most popular among Europeans).

The system will independently sort through all available offers in the surrounding area and provide information about suitable options for the expected travel dates. In addition, the service brings all conditions to a common denominator, which allows you to insure yourself against hidden fees, which rental companies often keep silent about.

You can find out the current conditions for renting a car for vacation in Tenerife and check out the rental cost on this page.
