Who was in the Pokrovsky monastery? Pokrovsky Convent

There are icons of the Holy Matrona of Moscow in many churches. She is revered not only in the capital, but also in Russia and in the world. But the main icon and relics are located in Moscow, in the convent on Taganskaya Street.

How to get to the Intercession Monastery

Pokrovsky stauropegial convent is located at the address: Moscow, Taganskaya street, building 58. Several metro stations are located nearby: “Taganskaya”, “Marksistkaya”, “Proletarskaya”, “Krestyanskaya Zastava” and “Ilyich Square”. The best way to get there is from “Marxist”, it is the closest.

It happened in modern life, that the Intercession Monastery in Moscow and merged in our understanding into one inseparable concept: help. After all, having come to this monastery with faith, love and hope, we receive the care and support we need so much from the holy blessed Matronushka.

The Women's Intercession Stauropegic Monastery at the Intercession Gate was founded by the Russian Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich as a tribute to the memory of his father, in the service of Patriarch Philaret, who ended his earthly life in 1635. The Patriarch died on the Feast of the Intercession, hence the name.

It was a long time ago…

On the lands where it was planned to build the monastery, there had long been a cemetery for homeless, unidentified people. Such people who did not accept church repentance before death could not be buried in ordinary parish cemeteries.

This is how terrible special places appeared: barns with deep holes. One hundred or two hundred unidentified corpses were thrown into them and covered with earth.

And only 2 times a year the priests performed funeral services for them. It was here that the corpse of False Dmitry was brought on a collapsing cart intended for manure in 1606 and thrown into a pit with many other mutilated corpses. Therefore, at first, people called the monastery that arose initially for men the monastery on Poor Houses or simply the Bozhedomsky Monastery.

The monastery was completed by another king, Alexei Mikhailovich. Money from the rental of these lands to tenants was invested in this construction. For this, among the common people the monastery was called “room monastery”.

In the 17th century, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt again, but from stone. In the next, already 18th century, the newly rebuilt Church of the Resurrection of the Word arose and nearby, by God’s command, a bell tower, consisting of 3 tiers, 30 meters high, grew by the hands of Russian craftsmen.

Ups and downs, destruction and restoration

In 1812, Hieromonk Jonah, who was at that time the Rector of the monastery, probably foreseeing future atrocities here, loaded all the church relics into a cart, took almost all the inhabitants with him and took them away from the city.

The monastery itself was severely destroyed during the war with Napoleon's troops: the French who entered the holy monastery land placed horses in the churches, burned and, mockingly, stabbed holy icons with bayonets, and used the altars as tables.

Soon after their departure, Elder Jonah returned, and with the help of the residents and monks, they, as far as possible, mostly restored the monastery. For this, Jonah was respectfully called “the builder.”

Around 1870, the Intercession Monastery became a missionary monastery. That is, monks lived and studied there, who expressed a desire, after graduating from the institute, to go to other cities on educational missions. During its existence, the institute has trained several dozen graduates.

But times have changed dramatically. In 1926-1929, churches began to close, and then the monastery itself suffered the same fate. The bell tower was blown to the ground. The cemetery that existed at the monastery was at that time the largest necropolis in Moscow. It occupied an area of about 5.4 hectares.

Many famous residents of the city were buried there. For example, a large family burial of members of the Botkin family, Khludov - a merchant quite famous for his charitable deeds, the poet Glebov, you can’t count them all...

But, despite this, in 1934 most of the graveyard was simply destroyed, and the Tagansky recreation park that still exists today appeared in this place. On the monastery land there was a gym, a printing house of a then popular publication, an extensive film studio, a magazine editorial office and other government offices.

The convent begins to live again

Almost 70 years later, in 1994, the monastery began to be revived, but as a monastery for women. In October 1995, the first divine service took place in the Church of the Intercession, which was still in a dilapidated state.

5 nuns with Abbess Feofania, the first abbess of the Holy Protection Convent, prayed and sang during this service.

And the abbess’s brother carefully cut out a new, very first iconostasis from a sheet of plywood, to which paper icons were attached. This is how the first solemn Divine Liturgy took place in the church, which was beginning its second life.

Later, all its buildings and vast lands were returned to the monastery. All except the one where Taganka Park is now located.

Over time, in 2002, the stone three-tier bell tower with a clock was completely restored. It became an exact copy of the one that was destroyed a long time ago: in 1926.

And now 12 bells, with their iridescent, powerful sound that carries over a long distance, call believers to Divine services.

On the territory of the monastery

The shrine is kept here

Currently on the monastery territory there are 2 large temple which have been completely restored. Closer to the entrance and bell tower is the Church of the Intercession, which has six chapels, and a little further stands the Resurrection Cathedral with three chapels.

At the end of this article there is a map of the area where you can better navigate the area. 🙂

Every day the Intercession Monastery on Taganka welcomes thousands of pilgrims who come here from different countries, places and cities. There are long queues of people who want to get into this sacred place for everyone.

Among other things, such a huge number of people come here also because the transferred relics of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow have been kept here since 1998.

Matronushka helped many people during her amazing life, filled with meetings with people. And even after her death, those who turn to her with sincere prayers receive an unexpected successful resolution of their difficult life situations.

So people seek Saint Matrona for support, for advice - someone wants to get happily married, get pregnant and give birth to a child, someone has been looking for a long time and cannot find a suitable job for themselves - parishioners turn to the Intercessor with completely different requests.

Let's bow to Mother Matronushka

Arriving at the Moscow Pokrovsky women. monastery, you will see two very long lines. One of them (it is visible first) leads to the icon of St. Matrona, which is located outside, on the facade of the Intercession Church building.

According to the existing unwritten rules, each person can stand near her as long as he needs to talk about his request. That is, an unlimited amount of time: one, for example, needs 3 minutes, while another needs a few seconds. But at the same time, no one is rushing anyone. Everyone stands and patiently waits to meet the saint.

But this is in “theory”. In practice, the guards “hurried” the believers so that they did not linger long near the icon. Perhaps this was because it was already evening time and the territory of the monastery was closed. Even so, the line moved very slowly.

The second line begins on the opposite side, where the entrance to the temple is located. Where its ending will be located... is different every time.

The second line moves a little faster, and it leads to the shrine with the relics of St. Matrons. This shrine is located inside the same temple, immediately behind the wall with the icon, to which there is the first line.

There are slightly different rules here. You can venerate the reliquary with the relics only for a few moments. There is always a security guard nearby who monitors this. Yes, this is understandable - after all, there are a lot of people, and everyone wants to, at least for a short time, touch the holy relics of the Matrona of Moscow, bow down and ask for help.

After you have venerated the relics of Matronushka, you can approach her icon, which is located directly opposite the shrine. It is very large, almost the entire wall, and decorated with gold items.

There are a lot of gold and silver jewelry: crosses, rings, chains. People bring them as a token of gratitude to Matrona for her help. In general, of course, it is customary to give thanks if your wish has come true, if your prayer has been heard.

Colorful houses

The hegumen and sister buildings, in which the sisters of the monastery live, look very elegant. The first one is green,

and the second one is pink.

And on the lawn between them I discovered a strange structure on a chicken leg! It turned out that it was just an ordinary bird feeder. But where does this design come from?? 😆

In general, I was very struck by some unusual aura of this place. Even nature reflected this very clearly. If behind the fence of the monastery the spring buds on the trees were still just swelling, then on the territory of the monastery, literally a few meters from the capital’s life, green leaves were already blooming on the branches with might and main!

Holy water and healing oil

To the right of the monastery churches (as seen from the entrance), there is a gazebo where you can collect holy water.

If you don’t have a bottle with you, then this problem is easily solved. Nearby, in the bell tower, you can buy plastic containers of different sizes for holy water. The cost of a liter bottle is 30 rubles, and a 5-liter bottle is 50 rubles.

On the vast, well-groomed territory, near the temples there is a shop and a church shop. Here you can buy various books on religious topics, souvenirs, icons, oil and oil consecrated on the relics of Matrona, an amulet with her face, which will then be useful to carry with you as a talisman or talisman that brings good luck.

How to use Matrona of Moscow oil? It is used in completely different ways. They smear it on sore spots and wounds; a few drops drip into the bath for both children and adults; To get pregnant, women take a drop on their stomach. There are no strict rules, use the oil as you wish, but only with faith and love. Come in, the store is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All amenities are provided for guests. Almost…

The monastery has a refectory where you can have an inexpensive snack: salads, hot dishes, pastries, cakes.

The assortment is very large: from lenten dishes to fast food. And the prices are quite affordable.

Equipped for children playground. This is a very wonderful idea: after all, parents of children can stand in a long line for several hours. But the kids won’t be bored; they can have a little fun here and play with other kids.

There are swings and slides installed here. There are sculptures of animals and birds nearby. There is a fountain in the clearing.

Walking along the road along the alley, I saw this flower angel. It was probably also a fountain, but it didn’t work in rainy weather. Apparently there was already enough water around. 🙂

At the Pokrovsky Monastery there is a five-star hotel “Pokrovskaya”, where you can relax in comfort. I don’t think that ordinary pilgrims will be able to afford it. A room per night with breakfast will cost from 6 thousand rubles. But the building looks very beautiful and modern. Especially with night lighting.

By the way, for those who want to stay in this amazing place for several days, you can choose more a budget option accommodation by booking a hotel room on the website or using the service to rent an apartment or room in any district of Moscow.

Temple of Peter and Fevronia

Behind the monastery wall there is another very beautiful church, consecrated in honor of the holy spouses.

The relics of these beloved Russian defenders and patrons of family life are now in Murom, in.

And in the church near the Moscow Intercession Monastery, wedding ceremonies are performed. And this place is very popular among newlyweds: after all, there are so many patron saints of this place: Matronushka, and Peter and Fevronia. And the city registry office is very close: right behind the monastery wall.

Be sure to go inside this temple if it is open. And even if you can’t pray inside, there is a mosaic icon hanging outside, right behind the altar, to which you can venerate. And, of course, pray to the holy Murom spouses, who lived together all their lives, died on the same day, were buried in the same grave, and even their relics are now in the same shrine.

The Church of Peter and Fevronia near the walls of the Intercession Monastery is open daily from 8.00 to 20.00, entrance from the courtyard.

How to get everything done

There are special dates in the calendar that are revered in the monastery: November 22, May 2 and March 8. This is Matrona’s birthday, the day of her canonization and the day when the relics of Matronushka became the main shrine of the Intercession Monastery. These days, especially many people gather here, groups of tourists come, so the queues become much longer, and there is a chance that you simply won’t get to see the blessed old lady.

Therefore, if, of course, you have such an opportunity, it is better to come to Matrona on weekdays, when there are fewer people and the queues will be shorter.

Sometimes, when the line to see the saint’s relics becomes very long, then the sisters come up to people and offer to do something “for the glory of God,” to help the monastery with deeds: maybe sweeping the floor, tidying up somewhere, arranging flowers and putting things in order. Usually, everyone happily agrees. And for this they are then escorted to the relics without a queue.

Pregnant women, mothers with small children or fairly elderly people are often skipped in line. But I want to note that not even everyone who can wants to skip the line. It seems to me that that solemn atmosphere of peace, the spirit of greatness of this very moment that reigns here, is inspiring in itself. And this is probably not just my feeling.

Yes, and more. If you've been standing in line for a long time and suddenly need to step away for a few minutes, exchange your phone numbers with your neighbors - those standing in front of you and behind you. Sometimes the line moves very slowly, but sometimes it moves very quickly. By calling your neighbor, you will easily find your place and will not miss your long-awaited meeting with the Moscow holy eldress.

And at the end, a little advice. If you want to get to the relics of St. Matrona almost without a queue, then come at the closing time of the monastery. 10 minutes before the end of his work, people are still allowed in. Then you can stay on the territory freely for some additional time. As the guards at the entrance told me: they don’t force visitors out, they wait for the last one. 🙂

That’s exactly what happened to me: I came almost to the closing. In the evening, which was also rainy, there were very few people. I got in line to see the icon, and then went inside the temple. I managed to approach Matrona’s relics in 10-15 minutes. After that, after walking around the area a little more, I returned first. It took 20-25 minutes. This is quite a bit: after all, people usually wait here for hours.

Letter to Matronushka

If you enter the Church of the Intercession, you can see two lines inside: the left one goes to the relics of the blessed old woman, and the right one goes to the icon shop. Here you can write notes, order requests, buy candles and everything you need. Usually, it is very crowded here and you can easily get lost in the crowd.

Therefore, I can advise you to write notes or letters to Matrona with your requests in the nearby Resurrection Cathedral or in an icon shop. There is no difference, but it can be done faster and more comfortably.

What do they write to Matronushka about, in what form? Of course, there are no strict rules for writing a note to the patron saint Matrona. Just write, if possible, briefly about your situation in which you are asking for help. The most important thing is that the prayer and request are sincere and come from the heart!

Letters and notes can be placed in special package, which hangs next to the relics, as well as the icon on the street. Every day, in the morning, the sisters bring here an empty bag for notes and appeals to the blessed old woman, and by the evening it is almost completely filled with people’s pleas for help and intercession.

Flowers for Matrona

Many go to the relics of Mother Matrona with a large bouquet of flowers to thank the old woman for her help in healing, or maybe for the help and advice provided in something else. During her lifetime, Matrona could not often pamper herself with the smell of her favorite living chrysanthemums and white roses. And now people are coming, bringing her flowers, no matter what.

The main thing is that they be from a pure soul, from a whole grateful heart. According to the existing tradition, Matrona is brought an odd number of flowers, like a living person - this is important!

If you also want to bring Matronushka a bouquet of fresh flowers, then it’s very easy to do. There are already sellers with different bouquets near the metro, and there are several flower shops near the monastery.

All flowers brought are blessed by the sisters of the temple near the relics of the saint. Raka is literally buried in various bouquets, and the smell in the temple from the floral aromas is simply heavenly!

When a person leaves, he is given several buds or petals with him. They should not be thrown away. What to do with flowers from Matrona of Moscow? Bring it home and preserve it somehow: dry it, for example. And then you can use it this way: just carry them with you for good luck (you can put them in your passport or purse).

And if there is any disease, then apply the shrine to the sore spot and turn to Matronushka with prayer.

There are certain rules here

And a few more tips, if you may. The church has its own etiquette, its own rules of conduct for parishioners. For example, about how to properly venerate holy relics. When approaching the shrine, you need to make 3 bows or bows to the ground in advance, crossing yourself.

When it’s your turn, kiss (kiss) the glass that is located above the relics. And remember that you cannot kiss saints on their faces. I think everyone understands that a woman should not wear lipstick at this moment.

After this, move a little to the side so as not to disturb others, and make another bow, crossing yourself and reading a short prayer, if you know.

Smoking, talking loudly, and swearing are not allowed on the territory of the monastery. And also, it seems, to take photographs. This is the rule I still don’t fully understand. I walked around the territory, filming everything. There were a lot of guards around, but they took it calmly. And only at the very end, when I was walking out and taking the last shots, one of the security guards came up to me and said that you can’t take photos here, even on the street.

You can't come here with animals either. It is recommended to turn off mobile phones.

Well, the uniform should also be appropriate. You should not come in shorts, short dresses and without a headscarf (for women). Let's follow these simple rules for visiting the relics of Matrona of Moscow.

Schedule

The Intercession Monastery is happy to welcome pilgrims every day. It is open to everyone from 7.00 to 20.00. And on Sundays, the doors for visiting open at 6:00 am. Entrance to the monastery territory stops after 20.00.

Also keep in mind that the Resurrection Cathedral closes earlier: already at 19.00 it was closed for cleaning.

Divine services in the Intercession Monastery are held daily at the same time:

  • Vespers and Matins begin at 16.45;
  • Hours and Divine Liturgy at 7.30;
  • On Sunday there are 2 Liturgies held here: 6.15 - early, and at 9.00 - late.

And prayers with an akathist are served daily near the relics of Saint Matrona. And on Monday, Wednesday and Friday they are supplemented with a prayer service.

If you need any other information: the schedule of services of the Intercession Monastery, its opening hours, or maybe you want to know about obedience in this monastery - all these questions will be answered by calling 8-495-911-49-20.

Come to the temple, bring any flowers. If you do not have such an opportunity, contact Matrona with words of gratitude right at home. She will hear!

Very often, particles of Matrona’s relics are delivered to various cities remote from the capital, so that as many people as possible have the opportunity to venerate the saint and turn to her either with a request for help or with words of gratitude.

Where is it, how to get there

The Temple of Matrona of Moscow is located at the address: Taganskaya street, 58. Entrance coordinates: 55.73829, 37.67154.

Probably the most convenient way to get to the monastery of St. Matrona is by metro. From the nearby metro stations “Taganskaya”, “Ploshchad Ilyicha” or “Marxistskaya” you can walk to the monastery in 15 minutes, without rushing.

It seemed to me that the easiest option to get to the monastery in Moscow, where the relics of Matrona of Moscow are located, is from the Marxistskaya metro station. It’s very convenient that there is only one way out of the subway: it’s impossible to get lost. 🙂

As you go out into the street, ahead and to the left across the road there will be a huge “Tagansky Passage”. The large sign on the roof of this store is easy to see.

There is a stop near the metro exit; no need to cross the road. Here you can wait for public transport to arrive 2 stops. I went to the monastery on foot along Taganskaya Street. The distance to the monastery is approximately 1 km, which is 10-15 minutes at a leisurely pace.

About halfway along the road you will see a beautiful snow-white temple on the right. This is the Church of St. Nicholas in Studenci.

Soon you will see the red walls of the Intercession Monastery.

The entrance will be near the Church of Saints Peter and Fevronia. She will remain on the right. On the left there will be a multi-storey building of the Pokrovskaya Hotel. Walking a little forward, you will see a security post where metal detectors are installed. This is the last obstacle on the way to the Intercession Monastery and to the blessed Mother Matronushka! 🙂

But, of course, you can also get to Matrona of Moscow by bus, by minibus, you can do it by car - whatever suits you.

Unfortunately, the monastery does not have its own parking lot. So if you decide to come here by car, you will have to use paid parking spaces nearby or simply leave your car for a while in some courtyard of one of the nearby residential buildings.

On the map you can determine the exact location of all objects along the route to the Monastery of the Intercession, as well as on its territory (click “+” or “-“ to zoom in or out of the image).

To conveniently travel around the Russian capital, you can easily rent an apartment or a room in Moscow using the service, or book a hotel in any convenient location.

My trip took place on April 28, 2017. And the next day I went to where Matrona of Moscow was buried in the last century. And I spent the night in a hotel, from the windows of which a delightful view of the city opens.

The map below shows other attractions and where I was able to visit.

- this is how Orthodox Christians lovingly call the blessed Matrona of Moscow. Within the walls of the Intercession Convent lies the ashes of a saint so revered by the people. During her lifetime, she was a favorite of the people, and now, after being glorified as a saint in 1998, the monastery can barely cope with the flow of people. Thousands of people come here for consolation, for healing and hope.
When Matrona was 14 years old, she met with Saint John of Kronstadt. At the end of the service, he asked the people to make way for the girl and said: “Here comes my shift - the eighth pillar of Russia.” He foresaw Matrona's service to the Russian people during times of persecution of the church.
The fact that the girl was chosen by God was evidenced by the fact that at baptism, when the priest lowered the child into the font, those present saw a column of fragrant light smoke above the baby. Father Vasily baptized Matrona and said that this child was holy. What do people come to Matrona with: incurable illness, sudden illness, disappearance of loved ones, husband leaving the family, drunkenness, drug addiction, unhappy love, loss of job, persecution from superiors.

Story

The Pokrovsky Monastery was founded in 1635 by Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich Romanov in memory of his father, Patriarch Philaret, who died on the Feast of the Intercession Holy Mother of God. The monastery was located on the site of the so-called Poor (God's) houses, where the poor and those caught in sudden death were buried. The main church of the monastery was the wooden Church of the Intercession, next to which there was a five-domed church in the name of All Saints. Several times a year, on Semik (the seventh Thursday after Easter) and on the Feast of the Intercession, cathedral religious processions from Moscow churches and monasteries were held here to celebrate a general memorial service and bury the dead. On Easter days, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich and his son Theodore visited the Pokrovsky monastery, as usual, they celebrated Christ with the brethren and left donations for the benefit of the monastery and the poor people it cared for.

From 1680 to 1731, the monastery was listed as attached to the Zaikonospassky Monastery. From 1751 to 1776 the Theological Seminary was located here. Under Catherine II, the monastery was taken out of state and was in great need of funds.

At this time, the monastery received significant help from Moscow merchants. At the end of the 18th century, major construction began in the monastery: a stone church in the name of All Saints was built on the site of a wooden one, a stone three-tier bell tower, walls, and an almshouse were erected.

In 1812, the monastery was devastated by the French, all wooden buildings were burned, and churches were desecrated. Through the efforts of the abbot, Archimandrite Jonah, the monastery was restored over the course of several years. The Church of All Saints was re-consecrated in 1815, and the two-story Church of the Intercession - in 1825 by Moscow Metropolitan Philaret. At the same time, the monastery was unexpectedly visited by Emperor Alexander I, who found Father Jonah in his cell praying, which the abbot, according to custom, performed in only a hair shirt. The elder said: “Sovereign, what you found him in, judge him in that.” To which the emperor replied: “I would always like to catch the monks doing such an activity” - and then talked for a long time with the abbot and examined the monastery.

In the middle of the 19th century, the All Saints Church, which had become cramped, was rebuilt according to the design of the architect M.D. Bykovsky and took on the appearance of a majestic spacious five-domed church with three altars: in honor of the Resurrection of the Holy One, the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God and the martyr Queen Alexandra (the latter is now consecrated in honor of the blessed Matrona of Moscow). Thus, the total number of thrones in the monastery reached 9, according to the number of 9 ranks of Angels.

In 1870, Saint Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow, gave the monastery missionary status. Here clergy and monks were trained to preach about Christ to distant Siberia. Former missionaries lived in the Intercession Monastery in retirement. Many of them found their final refuge in the vast monastery cemetery, where Georgian hierarchs, clergy and monastics of Moscow churches and monasteries, and prominent representatives of merchant families also rested. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the necropolis of the cemetery of the Intercession Monastery numbered up to three thousand tombstones.

In 1893, with the blessing of the Holy Synod, “on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the blessed death of St. Sergius Hegumen of Radonezh the Wonderworker,” a parochial school for boys for 30 people was opened at the monastery. At the same time, under the rector Archimandrite Sergius, the construction of a monastery hotel for missionaries began (restored in 2015).

IN late XIX- At the beginning of the twentieth century, the monastery reached its peak. By 1917, 30 monks and about 20 novices labored here. There was a shelter for boys and a women's almshouse for 80 people, located outside the monastery fence. The buildings of the monastery hosted classes for the Moscow Pastoral Courses, in which by 1916 400 people were studying. Future clergymen underwent liturgical practice in monastery churches (on Sundays and holidays 5-6 liturgies were performed). During the First World War, the monastery cared for the infirmary of the Meat Exchange, located nearby, where up to 500 wounded soldiers were simultaneously located. Two chapels were assigned to the monastery: in honor of the Bogolyubsk Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos at the Varvarsky Gate, near the Kremlin, and St. Nicholas on Upper Taganskaya Square, in which the brethren regularly served prayer services to the Mother of God and St. Nicholas.

Surprisingly, just before the revolution, the monastery found itself connected with Athos: in 1913–1915, by decision of the Holy Synod, about 30 Athonite “Imyaslavtsy” monks, former inhabitants of the St. Panteleimon Monastery, were sent here, the supervision of whom was entrusted to the rector of the monastery, the vicar of the Moscow diocese .

After the revolution, the authorities planned to open a concentration camp in the monastery, but for some unknown reason they never carried out their plans. The buildings were used as a dormitory for tram depot workers; the cemetery was gradually razed to the ground and turned into a recreation park for them. Services up to last day were performed in the Church of the Resurrection, although since 1923 the authorities have been making active attempts to completely close the monastery: they took away the Intercession Church, and in 1926 they completely demolished the bell tower. Thanks to the support of parishioners, the monastery operated until October 1929. This was largely the merit of the last rector, Archimandrite Veniamin (Milov), later Bishop of Saratov.

The fate of the last monastery inhabitants was tragic: repressions, exiles, executions... Now six monks and one parishioner of the Intercession Monastery have been canonized as saints: hieromonks Danakt (Kalashnikov), Methodius (Ivanov), Hilarion (Tsurikov), John (Laba) , Sergiy (Bukashkin); a pupil of the monastery orphanage, novice Sergius (Krestnikov) and parishioner martyr Vasily (Ivanov). Four of them were shot at Butovo training ground, and three are included in the Cathedral of Athos Saints.

For about seventy years, trusts, offices, banks, a gym, and a billiard room were located in the buildings of churches and monasteries.

In 1994, by decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the monastery was revived as a women's monastery. His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II appointed nun Olga (Miskina), who took monastic vows with the name Feofaniya, as abbess of the Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery. In 1998, the thrones of the Intercession Church of the monastery were consecrated again, and the abbess was elevated to the rank of abbess. In 2002, three chapels of the Church of the Resurrection were consecrated with a great ceremony, and the bell tower was recreated on the previous foundation.

Since 1998, the monastery has housed the relics of the holy, righteous and blessed Matrona of Moscow. A confessor and ascetic of the twentieth century, she was glorified as a locally revered saint on May 2, 1999. At the Council of Bishops in 2004, church-wide veneration of Blessed Matronushka was established. And today, in an endless stream of people, people go to the Intercession Monastery to venerate the healing relics of the holy old woman, they ask - and they receive what they ask for.

The monastery also contains revered shrines: icons with particles of the relics of St. Neil of Stolobensky, St. Innocent of Moscow, the right hand of the blessed Queen Theophania, particles of the relics of the Kiev-Pechersk saints, St. Luke of Crimea, as well as other ascetics. In the Church of the Intercession there is an icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost” - the cell image of the blessed Matrona of Moscow.

Since 1998, there has been a monastery compound at the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Markovo, Ramensky district, Moscow region. In 2004, a shelter for girls was opened, where 40 children are raised. In 2010, at the intersection of the Warsaw Highway and the Moscow Ring Road, the first Moscow church of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow, which is also the monastery’s courtyard, was consecrated.

With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', in 2013 the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trinity-Lykovo was transferred to the monastery as a metochion, where there is also an Orthodox gymnasium for 100 students.

On July 23, 2015, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' consecrated the recreated monastery hotel for pilgrims. The complex with the hotel includes the Church of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom. As in all courtyards of the monastery, the Sacraments of Baptism and Marriage are performed here.

The main patronal holidays of the monastery are the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary (October 14) and the days of memory of the blessed Matrona of Moscow (March 8, May 2, November 22).

Temples and Worships

According to the inventory of 1763, the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God was stone, single-domed, with a chapel of St. John of Damascus. In 1806, the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God was dismantled. The two-story stone, cruciform, single-domed Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God, founded in 1806, was completed in 1810, thanks to the support of willing donors and the diligence of the builder Jonah. Here are the thrones: at the top of the Intercession of the Mother of God, on the right side of St. Apostles Peter and Paul, on the left St. Nicholas, below St. Jonah, on the sides are chapels in the name of St. Hilarion the Great and Nil Stolobensky. Thus, the churches of this monastery contain, according to the order of the nine ranks of angels, nine thrones. In the upper Church of the Intercession, the throne restored and decorated with Jonah was consecrated in 1825 by Moscow Archbishop Philaret.

On April 4, 1998, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II consecrated the 1st floor of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and the crosses of the Resurrection and Intercession Churches.

On November 22, 1999, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II performed the Great Consecration of the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.

According to the inventory of 1763, the Cathedral is stone, five-domed, in the name of All Saints (now the Resurrection of the Word), with one throne, with a porch and two tents. Its roof was covered with planks, and its heads were covered with painted tin. In its four-band altar iconostasis, the images were decorated with silver crowns and vestments, and some with pearls and precious stones. In 1792, the Church of All Saints was dismantled. In the middle of the monastery, a one-domed stone church in honor of All Saints, built by the support of the Moscow merchant Diomid Meshchaninov, was consecrated by Moscow Metropolitan Plato, and its side chapels: in memory of the renovation of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ and the Tikhvin Mother of God were consecrated back in 1772. In 1814 and 1815, Archbishop Augustine consecrated the restored churches in memory of All Saints, who are now the Sorrowful Resurrection and the Tikhvin Mother of God. The cathedral church turned out to be cramped; then the skilled architect M.D. Bykovsky in 1853 built a vast building with five domes, which contained part of the old one, which was later dismantled: in the middle of it, under the dome, the original four pillars, or pylons, connected by arches remained, as well as the eastern wall of the main altar. Attached to the middle large dome are four octagonal side domes with domes, covered with white tin and topped with gilded crosses. Around the middle tribune, under the arches of the temple, there is a sacristy, illuminated by windows from the side domes.

Slender and majestic, this building is in the Romanesque style, suitable for the Greek; the ornaments of its external walls, windows, doors and domes are in the same style. The interior of the cathedral corresponds to the exterior itself. From the main temple, or the so-called ship, under the dome of the tribune, two side altars are separated by light arches on the pillars. In the middle part there is a throne in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, a northern one in the name of the Tikhvin Mother of God, a southern one in memory of St. Martyr Alexandra, celebrated on November 6. The three parts of the temple, its three branches, three thrones and three entrances express its symbolic triplicity. The spaciousness in the temple is combined with its full illumination from the wall windows and the tribune, with the variety of parts the harmonious unity of the whole, manifesting the idea of the temple. The altar iconostases of the main and side altars, placed on a three-degree sola, are decorated with skillful carvings and rich gilding; Some of the images in them are ancient Greek style from the previous iconostasis, others were again painted in the Fryazhsky style. Of these, the luxuriously decorated ancient and venerable icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God is especially remarkable. The main altar, although not extensive, is distinguished by its splendor, its iconostasis in five tiers. The vault above the throne in the form of a canopy rests on six pillars, marbled, which separate the southern and northern pre-altariums on both sides. On the walls and vaults of the altar, temple and meal, acts from the earthly life of the Savior and the faces of the Saints are personified by the experienced brush of Artari, Myagkov and Tiveisky. In decent places the corresponding sayings of St. The scriptures were inscribed by the Church Slavonic calligrapher Leonty Lepeshkin. The spacious and bright meal is adjacent to the spacious vestibule of the temple.

In 1929, a decree was issued to close the monastery. After 66 years of devastation and desolation, in 1995, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus', the Intercession Stavropegic Convent was restored here with the appointment of nun Feofania (Miskina) as the abbess of the monastery.

On April 4, 1998, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II performed the Great Consecration of the crosses of the Church of the Resurrection of the Word.

On November 22, 2001, three chapels of the Church of the Resurrection of the Word were consecrated in full on the day of the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the blessed Elder Matrona. The great consecration was performed by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II.

Bell tower

According to the inventory of 1763, the bell tower of the Intercession Monastery was made of stone, tented, with eight bells and a German fighting clock.

In 1799 it was rebuilt into a three-tier building in the German style, 15 fathoms high with a spire and cross.

The old bells, cast by the once famous master Slizov, are remarkable, as can be seen from the following inscriptions on the polyline: “On the 28th day of March 1750, this bell was poured into the monastery of the Intercession of the Most Holy Father, which is near Moscow in poor houses, under the power of the most pious and autocratic great city of the empress Elisaveta Petrovna, autocrats of All Russia and under the heir of her grandson Peter the First, the blessed one of the city and Grand Duke Peter Feodorovich and his wife the blessed one of the city and the great princess Ekaterina Alekseevna, contribution former one honoring the builder of the hieromonk of Strength henceforth for remembrance; it weighs 130 pounds, master Konstantin Mikhailov and Slizov.” In everyday life: “On the 12th day of April 1747, this bell was poured into the monastery of the Intercession of the Most Holy Fathers, which is in a wretched house, through the efforts of the builder, Hieromonk Silas; contributor Danila Yakovlev of the dream of Zemskovo and other Christ-loving donors, weight 66 poods, 27 lbs. lil master Kostantin Mikhailov sn Slizov.”

In 1926 it was blown up. On May 2, 1999, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II consecrated the foundation stone of the new monastery bell tower on the site of the destroyed one. Twelve bells were cast at the famous Tutaevsky Bell Factory of Nikolai Shuvalov (Italmas LLC), which preserved more than 300 years of Russian tradition of casting bells “in clay.” These bells are distinguished by their durability, euphony and extraordinary power of sound.

On October 4, 2002, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II consecrated the bell tower and bells.

Children's shelter of the Pokrovsky convent at the Pokrovskaya outpost

With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus', an Orthodox orphanage of mercy for girls was opened at the Intercession Monastery in 2004. The official name of the shelter is the Social Rehabilitation Center "Children's Shelter of the Intercession Convent at the Intercession Gate of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate)."

The monastery shelter houses 27 children aged 6 to 18 years. The fate of these girls is difficult - most are orphans with living parents - alcoholics or drug addicts. The monastery sisters, who have special pedagogical education and extensive experience working with children, work with the pupils.

Children study at an Orthodox gymnasium in Trinity-Lykovo, and also receive additional educational services within the walls of the monastery and study at a music school. Classes on advanced study of school subjects and homework are taught by Orthodox professional subject teachers who also have experience in Orthodox education of children.

The life of the shelter is scheduled almost minute by minute; In addition to regular activities, in the morning and evening a general reading of prayers, the Epistles of the Apostles, and the Gospel is obligatory. All girls from the age of 7-8 already read them aloud on their own: the youngest in Russian, the older ones in Church Slavonic.

The meal is always shared, with prayer. The older girls fast in the same way as the sisters of the monastery, and even during fasting the younger girls are given dairy products from the monastery farmstead to strengthen their growing bodies.
All girls are taught to work: keep their cell, classroom clean, help clean the corridors, and the refectory; sew, knit, embroider, cook.

The pupils of the orphanage certainly participate in divine services - on Saturdays, Sundays, twelfths and patronal feasts, the girls sing at the all-night vigil and during the Divine Liturgy.

Children also regularly attend Patriarchal services, for example, the Annunciation in the Kremlin. According to the holiday tradition, together with the pupils of the orphanage, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill releases doves into the sky.
The orphanage's pupils spend a lot of time preparing for the holidays, especially Easter, the Nativity of Christ and the days of remembrance of Blessed Matronushka. The girls perform performances, prepare musical numbers, sing songs dedicated to the holiday, and carols at Christmas. Children love these holidays very much and happily show their knowledge and skills to all sisters and guests.

They also have free time: every day the pupils can play, run around on the street or in a special playroom, watch Orthodox movies or cartoons, read their favorite book, and play in the gym.
Excursions and pilgrimage trips to cultural and natural reserves are conducted, entertaining and educational trips to the zoo, cultural and recreation parks, and boat trips are organized.

The monastery shelter lives like one big family, where everyone feels needed and loved. Angel days and birthdays are celebrated by everyone together. All the joys and sorrows of children are common. During her lifetime, Matronushka loved orphans very much, and today, under her wing, the pupils of the monastery orphanage are growing up, learning to fulfill the commandments of Christ about love for God and neighbors, to be “light” and “salt” for the world.

The shelter of the Intercession Monastery accepts children from disadvantaged, single-parent families from 6 to 11 years old.

For questions regarding admission to an orphanage, please contact the monastery office at 8-495-911-81-66, [email protected]

Monasteries began to appear even before the start of the Mongol-Tatar invasion of Kievan Rus. They were not only the center of spiritual life, but also served as defensive structures. Every year there were more and more of them, since each subsequent ruler who came to power founded at least one new one with his own money.

How was the Holy Intercession Convent created in Moscow?

The Intercession Convent in Moscow began its history as a men's monastery. It was founded by Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich in 1635 in honor of his deceased father and grandfather. It was completely completed and equipped only in 1655. There are two versions of why this name was given:

  • Patriarch Filaret, the parent of the founder of the monastery, died on the Feast of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary;
  • due to its location - near the Pokrovskaya outpost.

In those days it was called the Tsarsky Pokrovsky Monastery, which is located on the Poor Houses. Gradually the territory of the monastery was destroyed. So in the 18th century, the Church of the Resurrection of the Word and a three-tier bell tower 30 meters high appeared here, and in 1814 - the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During the wars it was destroyed, then rebuilt, and in 1920 it was completely closed. Since 1934, its buildings have housed various organizations: a printing house, a gym, a film studio, a scientific and production association, the editorial office of a local printed publication, and the entire West Side was given over to a park of culture and recreation, which later became Tagansky Park. Only in 1994 the monastery building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.

How to get to the Intercession Monastery in Moscow?

Pokrovsky Monastery in Moscow is located at the address: st. Taganskaya 58. Getting there is very easy. To do this you need:

  • get to the Taganskaya or Marksistskaya metro station, and from there by any means public transport along the streets of the same name to the “Bolshaya Andronevskaya” stop;
  • take the metro to the stations “Krestyanskaya Zastava” or “Proletarskaya”, then walk from them to Abelmanovskaya Zastava Square.

The Intercession Monastery in Moscow has certain opening hours for visiting tourists and parishioners: all days from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 6 a.m.

Icons of the Intercession Monastery in Moscow

It is very difficult to drive past the Intercession Convent in Moscow, since its red walls and restored bell tower are visible from afar. But people most often come here not for beauty, but for help and reassurance. Since this is where:

Buildings of the Intercession Convent in Moscow

The entire territory of the monastery is surrounded on three sides by a high red wall, along which there are benches for visitors.

Both temples, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, operate here. In one of them there is a shrine with the holy relics of Matrona, so large lines of parishioners often line up near it.

Immediately near this temple, a Poklonny Cross was erected to perpetuate those buried in the old necropolis of the monastery, on the territory of which the park is now located. A little further along the square there is a water-blessing chapel, where anyone can collect holy water.
