A grand opening ceremony of the airport, built over seven years as part of the Kuril Islands development program, took place on Iturup Island. The governor took part in the official opening ceremony of Iturup airport Sakhalin region Alexander Khoroshavin, yesterday, September 22, reports the correspondent. IA SakhalinMedia.

Opened the official ceremony Governor of the Sakhalin Region Alexander Khoroshavin:

Airport "Iturup" is the first in the post-Soviet history of the Russian Federation new airport, which is built from scratch. I sincerely congratulate you on this significant event! The decision to build it was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2003. The construction of this facility was accepted into the federal target program for the development of the Kuril Islands for 2007-2015.

In April 2007, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov arrived here on a working trip. During the meeting with him, it was decided to finalize the project. The length of the runway was increased from 1.4 thousand meters to 2.3 thousand meters. And its width was increased from 32 m to 42 m. Thanks to this, the airport was able to accommodate modern medium-haul aircraft.

According to Alexander Khoroshavin, various organizational and technological difficulties had to be overcome during construction. We had to work in a swampy area, and the elevation differences on the site ranged from seven to 12 m. All of them were overcome thanks to the efforts of the general contractor JSC Gidrostroy.

In conclusion, Alexander Khoroshavin noted that the problem of air traffic on Iturup has been resolved. The airport is all-weather. Its equipment makes it possible to receive aircraft in the same minimum weather conditions as at the airport. His specifications allow aircraft to be received various types, which in the future can connect Kurilsk with Far Eastern cities. And tourists have something to see in Iturupe - volcanoes, waterfalls, one of them is Ilya Muromets, more than 100 meters high, the largest in Russia. Now there are already proposals for the construction of hotels, hydropathic clinics, and mud baths on Iturup. By introducing two ports the problem is also solved transport accessibility islands.

Let us remind you that at 14.50 on September 22, a Dash-8-300 plane with 32 passengers on board landed at Iturup airport in the city of Kurilsk. Thus, the Aurora airline opened regular flights between Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and the new airport on the Kuril island of Iturup.

The first passenger, and it turned out to be Kuril resident Mikhail Uralsky, greeted the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Alexander Khoroshavin. At the same time, the opening ceremony of a new airport took place, the construction of which lasted seven years as part of the federal target program for the development of the Kuril Islands. It was noted that the Iturup airport, which, unlike the Burevestnik airport, can already receive medium-haul aircraft today, will largely solve the problem of transport communication with the Kuril Islands.

The Governor of the Sakhalin Region visited the Kuril City District on a working trip, where he took part in the opening ceremony of new air gates, and also inspected the progress of construction of a number of socially significant facilities within the framework of federal and regional programs. On the trip, the head of the region was accompanied by the leaders of the regional government, as well as member of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Alexander Verkhovsky, reports the press service of the government of the Sakhalin region.

Speaking at the ceremony, the governor called the opening of Iturup airport a landmark event in the history of the Sakhalin region, emphasizing that this is the most modern air harbor on the islands and the first such facility built from scratch in post-Soviet Russia.

“The decision to build the airport was made in 2003 by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This facility was included in the federal target program for the development of the Kuril Islands for 2007-2015 and began construction seven years ago. The country's leadership set a goal - to create a new, safe airport for flights on Iturup. The implementation of the project was not easy. I had to overcome organizational difficulties, solve problems of delivering equipment, materials and cargo, work in harsh climatic conditions, in a swampy, difficult terrain, the elevation changes in which ranged from 7 to 12 meters,” said Alexander Khoroshavin.

He added that an important stage in the construction of the airport occurred in April 2007. Then, following the results of the working trip of the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ivanov to Kurile Islands a decision was made to finalize the project. The length of the runway was extended from 1450 to 2300 meters, and its width from 32 to 42 meters. Thanks to this, the airport was able to receive aircraft such as the An-74-200, and in case of emergency - the An-12.

“As a result, all questions were closed, and many difficulties were successfully overcome. We got a modern, unique for Far East airport. Today it is ready for work. Runway and parking apron built aircraft for 3 seats, a taxiway, an emergency rescue station, a service and passenger building combined with a command and control tower, a technical building, power supply facilities, radio engineering support for flights and weather support, water supply networks, roads,” said the head of the region.

According to him, regional authorities expect that by the beginning of the second half of next year, with the completion of all necessary procedures, Iturup airport will become regional property. This will allow us to begin working on expanding the geography of flights and increasing the number of flights to the Kuril urban district.

By the end of this year, it is planned to complete the construction of a number of airport facilities: a fuel and lubricants warehouse, a boiler room, and a building for electrical and lighting services for flights.

During the ceremony, Alexander Khoroshavin thanked the employees of Gidrostroy CJSC, the company that built the air harbor, and the staff of the regional state-owned enterprise Kuril Islands Airports for the great work done.

The Governor also warmly greeted the passengers of the first regular flight Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk - Iturup. Soon they will be able to travel from the airport to Kurilsk by bus, a certificate for which the head of the region presented to the head of the municipality, Tatyana Belousova.

The new airport will not be inferior in its technical capabilities to the main air gates of the region. And, according to Alexander Khoroshavin, its commissioning will contribute to the development of tourism in the Kuril Islands. The not entirely favorable location of the previously used Burevestnik airport, along with difficult natural and climatic conditions, constantly made adjustments to the flight schedule. Today, too, he was not ready to accept a civilian flight due to weather conditions.

Unlike Burevestnik, Iturup airport is located in close proximity to Kurilsk, the villages of Reidovo and Kitovoe. There is a new asphalt highway leading to them. Now those arriving on the island will not have to spend several hours driving on a shift car to get to populated areas.

What to do if your flight is canceled

If a flight is canceled more than 24 hours before departure, passengers will be transferred to similar airline flights. The carrier bears the costs; the service is free for the passenger. If none of the options offered by the airline suits you, most airlines can issue a “ forced return" Once confirmed by the airline, the money will be returned to your account. Sometimes this can take several weeks.

How to check in at the airport

Online check-in is available on most airline websites. Most often it opens 23 hours before the start of the flight. You can go through it no later than 1 hour before the plane departs.

To check in at the airport you will need:

    • identification document specified in the order,
    • birth certificate when flying with children,
    • printed itinerary receipt(optional).
  • What can you take on a plane?

Carry-on luggage is the items you will take with you into the cabin. Weight norm hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg, and its size most often should not exceed the sum of three dimensions (length, width and height) from 115 to 203 cm (depending on the airline). Lady's bag does not apply to hand luggage and is carried freely.

The bag you take with you on the plane should not contain knives, scissors, medicines, aerosols, or cosmetics. Alcohol from stores duty free can only be transported in sealed packages.

How to pay for luggage at the airport

If the weight of luggage exceeds the standards established by the airline (most often 20-23 kg), you need to pay for each kilogram of excess. In addition, many Russian and foreign airlines, as well as low-cost airlines, have tariffs that do not include free baggage allowance and must be paid separately as an additional service.

In this case, luggage must be checked in at the airport at a separate Drop-off check-in counter. If you are unable to print boarding pass, you can get it at the regular airline check-in counter, and check in and drop off your luggage there.

Where to find out the arrival time if you are a greeter

You can find out the plane's arrival time on the airport's online board. The Tutu.ru website has an online display of the main Russian and foreign airports.

You can find out the exit number (gate) on the arrivals board at the airport. This number is located next to the incoming flight information.
