When is the best time to vacation in the Bahamas? Open left menu grand bahama. What about transfer and insurance?

Hi all!

Many people consider the Bahamas a paradise on earth... I had the opportunity to confirm or, conversely, refute this fact.

This review provides basic information about the Bahamas. More details about our holiday on different islands read below:

  • PART 1. NASSAU is the capital of the Bahamas. Flamingos, bars and the most expensive hotel in the country.
  • PART 2. EXUMA - heaven on earth. A house on the ocean, swimming with sharks, iguanas, pigs and complete relaxation.

THE BAHAMAS IS A SEPARATE COUNTRY

Not everyone knows that the Bahamas is an independent state. Most people think that it refers to America, and 30% of the Russian population does not know where this country is located.

The Bahamas is a country on islands of the same name north of Caribbean Sea and Cuba, southeast of the Florida Peninsula. The archipelago includes about 700 islands (of which only 30 are inhabited) and 2,000 coral reefs.

According to the form of government of the Bahamas - a constitutional monarchy. The head of state is the Queen. Her statue adorns the main square of the capital Nassau.

LOCAL CURRENCY

Naturally, the country has its own local currency - Bahamian dollar, which is equal to the US dollar. They do not have to be exchanged for each other. Restaurants and shops easily accept American dollars, and change can be given in a mix of both.

VISA TO THE BAHAMAS

For Russian citizens, a visa is not required when visiting the Bahamas, provided that the period of stay does not exceed 90 days. But you can't work for Bahamas.

If you want to stay on the islands longer, you need to apply for a visa.

HOW TO GET TO THE BAHAMAS?

It is impossible to get directly to the islands from Russia. The easiest way is to buy tickets with a transfer in any city in America (for us it’s Miami). And from there we fly to the Bahamas.

Airlines that definitely fly to the Bahamas are American Airlines and BahamasAir.

WHICH ISLAND TO CHOOSE?

It depends on why you are going to the Bahamas. Below is a list of the islands from which we chose. We settled on the first two!

New Providence Island with the capital Nassau considered the most expensive of all. This is a port city, and all life on the island is concentrated around the liners. It is famous for its nightlife; casinos, bars, clubs, cafes, and restaurants operate here around the clock, offering tourists entertainment for every taste.

Exuma Island - Great Exuma. A heavenly place where you can swim with sharks, see waterfowl and iguanas, and just enjoy the ocean. This is a secluded honeymoon destination!

Abaco Island with the resort Marsh Harbor is an ideal destination for yachting. Here you can go diving, snorkeling and fishing.

Berry Island - a reef island with beautiful nature.

Bimini Island - this is a small piece of land on a steep sea cliff, rich in natural monuments, representatives of sea and air fauna. Dolphins and giant turtles can be found off the coast of the island.

Eleuthera Island. They say that best beaches Bahamas and right here.

CUISINE OF THE BAHAMAS

The cuisine of the Bahamas is colorful seafood: lobsters, crabs, shrimp, fish... And everything is fresh and tasty! The price per serving varies depending on the dish:

  • $12-15 - small salad, appetizer.
  • $15-20 - main courses without seafood.
  • $20-40 - seafood dishes.

They also serve very strange combinations in the Bahamas, such as a sweet pancake with salty seafood inside.

The main dish of the Bahamas- Conk shellfish, which is consumed raw, after removing it from the shell, cutting it, sprinkling with lemon juice and mixing with vegetables.

WATER IN THE BAHAMAS

You can drink water directly from the tap after boiling it. The supermarket sells water imported from Florida.

WEATHER IN THE BAHAMAS

The weather in the Bahamas in March is changeable. Air temperature 22-32 degrees. The likelihood of precipitation is impossible to predict, and the weather forecast is also not particularly reliable. It may rain all day.

Or the sweltering sun.

ACCOMMODATION IN THE BAHAMAS

When choosing housing in the Bahamas, think carefully about where you want to live:

  • in a large hotel,
  • in a small motel
  • in a house by the ocean.

Large hotel Suitable for holidays with children when you are not going to travel outside of it. Usually such hotels are located right on the ocean, and inside there is everything you need for life, including three meals a day! Prices from 18 thousand rubles per day.

Probably the Bahamas is one of the most mysterious islands, firmly ingrained in our heads since childhood, as something distant, chic and unattainable... And indeed, it turned out that getting to the Bahamas is not so easy.

The first thing I did was, of course, try in our search engine... but that was not the case - the search engine gives literally two or three hotels, and even then only accommodation and most often without flights! It became clear:

  1. Russian tour operators practically do not travel to the Bahamas
  2. You can book a hotel either through a tour operator or directly through a hotel metasearch
  3. You will also have to do the search and purchase of air tickets yourself.

What about accommodation?

In ours, I managed to find the most cheap option accommodation (including flights) for 7 nights in hotel The Orange Hill Inn 2*, Nassau for 195,000 rubles (without meals), Sandals Royal Bahamian 5* hotel, Nassau will cost from 208,216 rubles for only 5 nights, but already with AI meals (All inclusive) - the search is relevant at the beginning of March 2018... but what about the metasearch?

Our hotel metasearch returned the following results:

  1. - from 47,800 for 7 nights (with breakfast)

  2. - from 35,900 for 7 nights (without meals)

It is important to note that when purchasing finished tour through a tour operator, the price includes not only accommodation, but also transfer to the hotel and back, medical insurance, guide services and sometimes travel insurance, while when booking a hotel through metasearch - only accommodation and sometimes breakfast.

What about air tickets?

Finding air tickets to the Bahamas was not easy - despite the availability of (at least three) major airports in the Bahamas, there are no direct flights from Russia regular flights, nor charters. What are the options?

There aren't many options. With one transfer you can fly to the Bahamas via London or the USA, but in the latter case you will need to obtain a transit pass American visa. There are also options with two... and even three connections, but I will focus on the option with one transfer. So:

  1. - a ticket for one person costs from 43,000 rubles. (travel time from 15 hours including transfers to infinity... but on average about 23-24 hours). There are also flight options with a transfer to Miami (MIA), but the flight is significantly more expensive - from 69,000 rubles.
  2. To the Bahamas via the UK, London (LHR) - a ticket for one person costs from 77,000 rubles. (travel time from 16 hours including connections to...)

Thus, it is cheaper through the USA, but you will have to spend money and who knows how much time to obtain an American transit visa.

What about transfer and insurance?

I managed to find a shuttle for about 19 euros one way per person... if you wish, you can also order a limousine for 166 euros one way (travel time about 30 minutes).

It will cost only about 1,500 rubles for two.

By the way, if you are already vacationing in Miami or planning a vacation there, you will be interested in the fact that from Fort Lauderdale (half an hour's drive from Miami) to the Bahamas there is a daily ferry - the Bahamas Express, which arrives at the island of Grand Bahamas. One way ticket price is 75 US dollars. Travel time from 2.5 to 3 hours:

  • Departure from Fort Lauderdale 8:00 - p arrival about. Grand Bahama - 11:00.
  • Departure from the island. Grand Bahama 19:00- p.m. Arrival Fort Lauderdale - 22:00.

What about the visa?

Russians do not need a visa to the Bahamas, provided that you plan to vacation in the Bahamas for no more than 3 months. However, it is worth remembering that if you decide to fly through the USA, you will definitely need to apply for a US transit visa.

How to eat?

The food industry in the Bahamas is represented quite widely - from local cafes and global fast food chains, to medium and expensive restaurants. A set lunch, for example, at McDonald's will cost you about 6.5 Bahamian dollars, the average bill is inexpensive cafe 10-15 Bahamian dollars per person, and lunch or dinner at a mid-level restaurant will cost about 60-70 Bahamian dollars. By the way, the Bahamian dollar exchange rate is rigidly tied to the American dollar in a 1:1 ratio.

  • Accommodation for two from 47,800 rub.
  • Flight through London for two round-trip from RUB 152,000.
  • Round-trip shuttle transfer costs about 5,000 rubles.
  • Traveler's insurance for two from 1,500 rubles.
  • Food according to your requests))

In total it turns out that minimum budget for a trip to the Bahamas excluding purchases, excursions and meals, about 200,000 rubles at independent planning. The price of purchasing a ready-made tour is comparable in price, but in this case all worries fall on the travel agency.

I hope I didn’t scare anyone))) After all, all the difficulties in planning a trip to the Bahamas are more than compensated for by the stunning beauty of the Bahamas and the unique atmosphere.

Fountain of Youth

Many legends and tales have been written about the fountain of youth. In fact, the first story about the unique source was told by the Taino Indians to Leon, who was traveling in these areas. If you wish, you can ask the local population about the fountain, which is located in the southern part of the city.

A little about the kitchen

In order to get to know national dishes archipelago, you don’t have to go to expensive establishments. Many national dishes were borrowed from Americans and Europeans.

One of the traditional delicacies of the Bahamas is the sea shellfish, which is also called “conk”. It is the main ingredient in first courses, salads and appetizers. The most expensive dish is spiny lobster, which can be enjoyed at certain times of the year. Gourmets flock for the opportunity to try this delicacy from April to August. It is during this period that fishermen are allowed to catch it.

Having visited an expensive restaurant or a cozy cafe, you can try baked crabs or various fish. Sea bass with white wine sauce, onions and mushrooms has an excellent subtle taste.

The Bahamian table should also include a dish based on peas in spicy sauce and rice.

The population of the island state loves dessert - guava pudding. Considering the fact that preparing the dessert takes a long time, it is prepared only for major holidays.

Among the alcoholic beverages in the Bahamas, they drink rum, both in pure form and as part of cocktails.

Nuances for tourists

  • Given the weak supervision of the authorities on the islands over companies organizing active species sports, accidents often occur while surfing or fishing.
  • Outdoor enthusiasts should remember that the Bahamas prohibits spearfishing. For fishermen, there is a state duty, which is paid once when entering the ocean, in the amount of $20.
  • Divers are not allowed to carry out archaeological work on a sunken ship. Ignoring the rules leads to a fine and even deportation.
  • Swimming in fresh water is not advisable. Swimming pools with chlorinated water are suitable for this purpose.
  • There are no sharks on the beaches of the Bahamas, since they cannot penetrate here through the ridge of coral reefs. Swimming in the open sea is prohibited due to the nature of coastal currents.

Price

The prices for tours vary greatly. On average, if we consider a seven-day period of stay for two in the Bahamas, including round trip flights, the final cost will vary from 120 to 280 thousand rubles. And even more. It all depends on the tour operator, the island and the level of the hotel. A 10-day tour to Nassau will cost no less than $1,500.

The Bahamas can give unforgettable vacation every tourist. The climate is mild throughout the year, but even this paradise there is a season.

Holidays in the Bahamas are like paradise, a fairy tale or a dream; these islands cannot be compared with any other place on Earth.

When going to a travel agency, it is worth remembering that such a tour is an expensive pleasure, and prices may vary depending on the season.

The place of departure is also important; for example, prices for tours to the Bahamas in travel agencies in Moscow and Yekaterinburg vary.

Seasons

The Bahamas is one of the sunniest places in the world, with only 320 clear days a year.

Summer temperatures range from 26 to 32 degrees, and by winter they drop to 21.

Oddly enough, the islands are popular from November to April.

This season is called high season, prices for tours and hotels are the highest compared to other months.

From May to November in the Bahamas there is a rainy season, humidity is high, and from June to November hurricanes are possible.

But even during this period tourists come because travel companies offer low prices, which can be reduced with discounts of up to 60%!

IN winter period you will have to pay almost 1.5-2 times more, but you will have to book the tour several weeks in advance, since the demand is too high.

If you go to the islands at this time, you will most likely have to wait in line to rent a car.

Spring

Spring is a season at the beginning of which prices are quite high, but by May they fall almost 1.5 times.

This is due to the beginning of the rainy and hurricane season. In March, the temperature reaches 24 degrees, and in the following months begins to gradually increase.

Interestingly, tours to the Bahamas are starting to be offered in the fall. However, those who decide to enjoy a vacation from March to May need not worry: at this time, demand drops significantly.

The level of the hotel is also important: for a high class you will have to pay about 200 dollars a day, one day in a mid-level hotel will cost from 75 to 150 dollars, it depends on the chosen island. Even the most cheap trip

in spring it will cost about $70 per night.

Oddly enough, summer in the Bahamas is considered low season.

There are much fewer tourists at this time than in winter, prices have been reduced by more than 30-40% for almost all services. Travel companies call this period a lazy beach holiday.

The average temperature is 28 degrees, the sea is warm and welcoming. However, your vacation may be spoiled by the rainy season or a hurricane, but if you take a chance, you can find a great deal from a travel agency and save a lot.

During this period, as in any other, prices depend on the comfort of the hotel. For example, renting a room in a quiet, middle-class hotel will cost about $60-70 per night, and premium will cost no less than $400.

Autumn

In autumn, prices begin to gradually rise. Compared to summer, in November they increase by 30-40%.

This is due to the beginning of the high season and the approach of the New Year, which many will want to celebrate in warm countries. At the end of autumn, it will no longer be possible to find cheap tours with discounts.

The average price for a tour for two adults in the fall to the island of Eleuthera is approximately 120 thousand rubles.

The vacation lasts 10 days and 9 nights. Departure is from Moscow, meals are not included.

The price includes flights and accommodation in a large room consisting of a living area, bedroom, and bathroom. You need to be prepared that you will have to pay an additional fuel surcharge.

Towards the end of autumn - beginning of winter, the ticket price rises to 140-150 thousand rubles for two adults.

Winter

Winter is high season in the Bahamas. Prices reach their peak during this period, and buying a tour to the Bahamas becomes quite difficult.

To relax in winter and enjoy the sun, You need to contact a travel agency and book your trip at least three months in advance.

On the island you can find New Year, Christmas, take part in local carnivals and enjoy the spectacular view of the Winter Festival.

To go to a three-star hotel on Nassau Island at the end of December, you will have to pay about 250 thousand rubles for two adults.

The flight departs from Moscow. For five-star apartments on the same island you will have to pay about 450 thousand rubles. Prices depend not only on the hotel, but also on the airfare and food system.

Departure cities

The price of the entire tour also depends on the city from which the tourist flies.

Most often this is due to the remoteness of the city. For example, a flight from Moscow will be cheaper than from Novosibirsk or Yekaterinburg.

Now some companies offer discounts that make it possible to save a significant amount on your flight.

However, in this case you will have to look for a travel company that will provide a tour without flights.

When going on vacation to the Bahamas, many spare no expense and completely trust travel companies. But you can get into a fairy tale in a more economical way.

For example, you should not apply for a passport or visa through a travel agency; you can do this yourself.

A significant amount will not be spent if you choose and buy air tickets yourself. Many airlines offer discounts and cheap options that travel agencies do not consider.

And another way to save money that you can use while traveling is to rent a car and not use public transport, which is very expensive in the Bahamas.
