In terms of relaxation atmosphere, this is one of the most comfortable places in Sri Lanka. The beaches here are wide and long, with enough space for everyone.

At Narigama Beach, the ocean appears in all its glory - noisy, with powerful waves. On the Hikkaduwa beach (or in the lagoon, as it is more often called), on the contrary, there are no waves, you can swim, people swim there too sea turtles and colored fish. In this sense, the place is uncompromising: a kilometer and a half, and you are on a completely different beach.

Here you can feel in the thick of things - you can choose from many beach cafes, some of which host noisy night parties on the shore, surf schools, etc. Or you can be a little hermit, choosing a secluded place 10 minutes walk from the ocean and enjoy silence, birdsong and tropical laziness.

Hikkaduwa is conveniently located so that you can diversify your holiday with trips. From here you can easily go to other Sri Lankan beaches (to Bentota, to Unawatuna), by local bus or rented motorbike, in one day you can go to Galle and even to Colombo.

There is a coral reef here. True, it was very badly damaged during the 2004 tsunami, and do not believe those who write about its incredible beauty - this, unfortunately, is in the past. But there are remnants of the reef, and colorful fish in the lagoon and sea turtles swimming to the shore.

Another big plus about Hikkaduwa is that at this resort there is always a choice for everything. Hotels - from the most affordable to the fantastically expensive. Cafes range from local dollar eateries to cozy beach cafes. There are many options here and you can always find your own.

There is also a rather noisy road to Galle along the beach, which also needs to be taken into account when planning a vacation here (more on that below).

Sri Lanka has a rather unique microclimate due to the fact that the island is located almost on the equator (650 km to the equator), while the island is very small and a significant part of it is covered with mountains and forest.
