Where is the best place to relax in sunny Greece? Traveling to Greece on your own: useful resources and recommendations

Which resort to choose in Greece?

Hello again, dear readers! It's December and summer is still far away, but many are already thinking about vacation. I would like to draw your attention to sunny Greece.

Kos

Kos is a chic and expensive resort for the elite, it is not without reason that Hollywood stars choose it for their holidays. The island is small, located in the southeastern part Aegean Sea. There is a lot of greenery here, the nature is very beautiful.

Prices are high, so you probably won’t be able to relax on a budget.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos – amazing beautiful island, which you want to return to. Two rows of mountain ranges protect the valley from bad weather. Lush vegetation, sheer cliffs, picturesque bays with golden sand, closed from the sea - the most real paradise for tourists.

Unfortunately, people rarely land on the island; you can only get here local airlines or by ferry.

Santorini

Santorini – small island, volcanic origin, with coastline 70 km. White houses local residents Laconically integrated into the mountain landscape. It has its own, kind of aristocratic, cozy atmosphere. Life flows slowly, time seems to stop.

If you step back a little hiking trails, you can find wild places and enjoy solitude. The beaches of the island are very diverse, even the sand in each place has its own shade, from soft yellow to bright red.

Holidays on the island are expensive. As a rule, tourists come here for one day as part of excursion groups.

conclusions

There are many resorts in Greece and it is really difficult to choose. Beautiful nature and gorgeous beaches is in almost every corner of this sunny country. So where is the best place to relax in Greece? How many people, so many opinions. Where one person likes it, it won’t necessarily be good for another.

If you, dear readers, are interested in my opinion, then now I would act in the following sequence:

  1. Reading general information about the country and the main resorts
  2. We look at prices for tours or accommodation and air tickets (you may come across cheap tickets and it will be more profitable to travel on your own)
  3. Based on the second point, we decide how to relax, through a tour operator or on our own. I wrote how to make the right decision
  4. Most likely, for my first acquaintance with the country, I would choose one of the islands, focusing on price-nature-quality-easy transfer (in that order). You may have other priorities
  5. Having decided on the island, read detailed information about the resorts of this place, based on fresh reviews on the Internet
  6. Next, choose accommodation, a hotel or a house (if not a tour)
  7. Now buy a tour or tickets (if you are traveling on your own)

This plan is not suitable only for those who purposefully go to see certain attractions. It’s easier for such tourists; they just need to choose a resort closer to their desired places to visit.

That's all I wanted to talk about, I hope you have a general picture about the resorts of Greece.

You can soon learn about my personal impressions from the stories in the “My Travels” section. In the meantime, I suggest you read the article. It seems to me that this is a relevant question.

In the near future I will write about the island of Rhodes. Subscribe to my newsletter and be the first to receive new publications.

Recently, in some minor magazine, I came across a note that this country will also soon be closed to Russians. Allegedly, they will make a couple of provocations for this purpose. Haven't you heard anything? It will be a great pity. Write in the comments what you think about this. Very interesting read.

And I’ll say goodbye to you for a moment. Share the article on in social networks, convenient buttons are located below.

  • Mid and late summer - high season, scorching sun, crowds of tourists and expensive trips and the inflated cost of the stay on the island. At the beginning and, in some resorts, in the middle of autumn, prices are no longer so high, there are not so many visitors, and the weather is magnificent. At this time, it is better to choose Rhodes, Santoniri, Kos, Corfu and Santorini for vacation.
  • Starting from November, cold temperatures, winds and rains come. At this time, it is better not to come here if the purpose of the trip is not to explore local attractions, which Greece is certainly rich in. In November it can only be good here in Crete, Rhodes and Santorini. Other resorts are no longer ready to receive guests at this time.
  • The winter months are the low season, and only in December is it possible to have a pleasant holiday if you come to Kos or Crete. However, the last resort is not as comfortable as the others in the summer months. The best choice would be and.
  • As for spring, the tourist season opens in Greece in March only in Crete and Rhodes. Rest resort areas ready to receive guests starting in April and May. In some places the water is not warm enough even in June, and those who like to swim in the warm sea will have to wait about a month.

Resorts of Greece: TOP 6 best places to relax

Crete

Ideal hotel service. The best months to go are September and October.

The tourist season in the northern part of Crete lasts. In the south it lasts from November to November, so throughout October you can still enjoy warm water in the sea. Therefore, if you decide to go to Crete in mid-spring or autumn, choose southern part islands.

However, May is also characterized by heavy rain. In June, precipitation stops, it becomes warm, but the water in the sea is not pleasant on all coasts - we advise you to go to the coast of the Cretan Sea, since it is still cold in the Libyan Sea at this time.

The hottest months in Crete are July and August. At this time, it is better to spend your vacation only on the coast, where the intense heat is not so noticeable due to the sea breeze.

The best month is October - the Velvet season. The heat is not so intense, and the sea is warm - about 26 degrees. There is no rain. The downside is the peak of tourist activity, which is unlikely to be to anyone’s taste. However, you can avoid many troubles if you book your tour in advance.

In winter, Crete will be comfortable for those who travel to Greece not for a gentle, even tan and warm sea, but to get acquainted with history and rich architecture. At this time the temperature is on average 17 degrees, there are not many tourists.

Rhodes

A sea of attractions! Best time for holidays from June to October.

The tourist season in Rhodes begins in March and lasts until November. Beach lovers can go to the Aegean or Mediterranean Sea - the first is exciting and stormy, the second is calm and beautiful. Surfers most often go to the Aegean Sea.

Most tourists prefer to plan a vacation to Rhodes in the summer - at the very peak of the season. Prices at this time, of course, are high, but all entertainment venues are open until the morning.

When the low tourist season arrives, some hotels begin to close. This happens at the end of November, and traces of the former fun and influx of tourists can no longer be found. This calm lasts until April.

The beach season is almost the same as the tourist season. You can already enjoy sea water, but some especially impatient people dive into it at the beginning of spring.

The velvet season in Rhodes falls, as in Crete, in the beginning and middle of autumn. Sometimes it also covers part of November. At the same time, not only the weather is good at this time, but also the prices are reduced.

In November, however, the rains begin, and many restaurants and outdoor cafes close their work until the next season.

Many will be interested in the famous Colossus of Rhodes, the Acropolis of Rhodes, Archaeological Museum, Rhodes Fortress, Filerimos Monastery, Feraklos Fortress and Mount Ataviros.

Santorini

Interesting architecture of the city, clean air and sea.

In Santorini, the tourist season begins in mid-spring and ends in October. Its peak occurs in the summer - the sun shines incredibly strongly at this time. Throughout the day you can enjoy pleasant live music heard from taverns located on the coast; in the evening, tourists visit nightclubs. During the summer months, we recommend booking hotel rooms in advance - the influx of tourists is unusually large.

The low season in Santorini begins in November and lasts until March. During these colder months it is windy and humid, and ferries between the cities are infrequent.

The velvet season begins at the end of September, when tourists gradually begin to return home. Those who are lucky enough to have a vacation in mid-autumn stay and get the opportunity to enjoy the pleasant warmth and tranquility. The velvet season continues until the last days of October.

If you are interested in festivals, in Santorini they are most often held on religious holidays. In July, for example, “Agios Ionnis” is celebrated in Monolithos, at the end of which the memory of the patron saint Profitis Ilias is venerated. In mid-August - on the 15th - the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated.

Kos

Rich Mediterranean fauna, accessible beaches.

Kos is not as famous as other resorts, but it is also very good here - the infrastructure is excellent, the weather is warm. Tourist season, like others greek islands, lasts from April to October.

The peak is in July, August and the first weeks of September. The temperature at this time rises above 30 degrees, and there is a possibility of getting burns, especially if you are near water, which reflects the sun's rays well.

The low season occurs in the winter months, covering the last days of November and the entire month of March. At this time it rains heavily and it is cool. There are practically no tourists, so ferry connections between the islands are very weak.

People start going to the beach about a month after opening tourist season. You can swim in the warm sea until October. The velvet season begins in the second half of September and continues until the end of October. At this time, the sun pleasantly warms without burning, the water in the sea is warm, prices are reduced.

We recommend visiting the Ancient Agora - this historical region with many ruins of buildings dating back to completely different eras. Also interesting are the Archaeological Museum, the village of Zia, Palio Pyli, Asklepion and Kefalos, a city located in the south of Kos.

Corfu

There is no intense heat even in summer time. Beautiful nature and architecture.

Corfu has a Mediterranean climate, which influences its popularity among tourists. In the summer months there is practically no rain here, but there is a warming sun and a light sea breeze - all categories of citizens will be comfortable at this time, including the elderly, children, and those who have health problems or are contraindicated in extreme heat.

The beach season begins earlier than in other Greek resorts. the sea is not yet warmed up enough, although the air temperature reaches 28 degrees. But in late spring and early summer you can start exploring the island - walking in the mountains and visiting archaeological excavations.

The best month for a holiday in Corfu is July. The sea at this time is warmed up to 25 degrees, but the hotels are not yet packed to capacity.

The real heat comes in August. Great amount tourists, the merciless sun, and the high cost of tours and air tickets. You won’t be able to save money during your vacation either - restaurants and other establishments, including shops and souvenir shops, greatly raise their prices.

A good choice of month for a trip here would be autumn – its first weeks. Resort guests are leaving the resort, and vacation prices are becoming less exorbitant. Already in the second half of September, the weather gets worse - it can change frequently, bringing heat, wind, and rain.

In Corfu you can see the Angelokastro fortress, Kerkyra, St. Spyridon's Cathedral, Achilleion Palace, Shell Museum, Old fortress Kerkyra. Tourists often go to the Transfiguration Monastery, the Keri sea caves, and the fortress of St. Mavra.

Halkidiki

Beautiful green landscapes and first-class nightlife.

The tourist season in Halkidiki opens, like in most other resorts in Greece, in mid-spring, and lasts exactly six months. There are plenty of leisure options, which attracts many tourists here.

High season – July and August. During these months, prices are as high as the temperature. Most tourists become interested in the resort at this time. However, it is much better here during the high season - in September and the first week of October. Starting from the second week, it rains and gets colder.

Holidays in Halkidiki are least in demand from November to April. At this time people come here in search of tranquility and tours to Mount Athos. In winter, people go to Halkidiki to explore the surrounding area and get acquainted with the local cuisine.

The beaches in Halkidiki are incredible - the coastline stretches for 500 kilometers, the water is beautiful. Many people note that Halkidiki is best resort Greece. Local beaches were awarded Blue Flag, which indicates the purity of the water.

However, it is better to dive into it no earlier than May - few people decide to do this in April. In June, the water warms up quite strongly.

If you are interested in holidays and festivals, the Kassandra Festival takes place at the beginning of July - it ends only at the end of summer, and you can always have time to visit it. In mid-summer the “Feast of the Sardines” is celebrated, on the 27th the feast of St. Panteleimon – on this day various cultural demonstrations take place. August 15th is the day of the Assumption of St. Mother of God. You can attend a luxurious feast, taste delicious wine, and dance. The Tuna Festival takes place in September.

If you are going to Chaldiki, we strongly recommend visiting the Great Lavra Monastery, the Petralona Museum, the Potidea Canal, the floating monasteries of Meteora, Mount Athos, as well as Olynthos and Stagira - the oldest cities.

Where is the best place to relax with children?

Halkidiki, Crete and Corfu. Why are these resorts better for a child?

  • Halkidiki has good sandy beaches. Family-friendly hotels can be found in Sithonia. Best beaches Halkidiki - Kovios, Fourka, Sykia, Neos Marmaros, Tripotamos, Kalogria.
  • Crete – the best choice for a vacation with a child. Some beaches are specially designed for children - on Schizma in Elounda there is a club for teenagers and a children's playground. Unfortunately, there are no water parks on the island, but waterslides not found in every hotel.

Greece is a country where sights with a long history, such as the Acropolis, Parthenon, Areopagus, are combined with picturesque islands, luxurious beaches and spa hotels. Add here also excellent Mediterranean cuisine, the romance of narrow cobblestone streets, and you will get an ideal holiday destination, a paradise that really has everything! Is it possible to relax in Greece and still save a little? You will find the answer in this article.

Planning a vacation

The tourist season in Greece usually begins at the end of April and ends at the end of October. The high season is July-August. During these two months, many hotels are booked and it is almost impossible to get a free room, the beaches are crowded, and prices in local taverns and other recreational areas increase significantly. If you want to get to know Greece one-on-one, avoiding the ubiquitous crowds of tourists, we recommend visiting this country in September or the first half of October. At this time, the main flow of tourists leaves, hotels are empty, and prices become lower. At the same time, the sea still pampers with its warmth, and local shops offer many goods at discounts. Another option for the budget traveler is May - early June. The sea at this time is, of course, a little cool, and you are unlikely to be able to soak up the beach. However, if the purpose of your trip is to see the sights, then this period is ideal.

Choosing tickets

The best option to get to Greece for most travelers, of course, is air travel. Direct flights exists between many of our country’s “million people” and Greek Athens, Thessaloniki, and also popular islands. The cost of an air ticket depends on which carrier company you choose. The average cost of a flight with Aeroflot is about 20,000 rubles. The local air carrier Aegean Airlines offers a flight for 22,000 - 25,000 rubles. You will have to spend, on average, about four hours on the flight. If you want to see the islands of Rhodes or Crete, then they will come to your aid charter flights, the main advantage of which is direct flights and relative cost-effectiveness. However, if you are planning your trip in winter or in the off-season, then you cannot do without a transfer - you will be offered a route through Athens or Thessaloniki.

Getting to Greece by train is quite difficult. Direct train service between Moscow and Athens was discontinued many years ago. If you are afraid of flying, then the alternative to a plane will most likely be a bus. Flights are offered mainly to Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece. On the way you will have to make a transfer, and even more than one. For example, in Minsk, and then in the city of Katowice - in southern Poland. There are also other flights: with a transfer in Brest, Prague, Vilnius or Sofia. The average fare is about 10,000 rubles; you will have to spend about three days on the road. Such a trip can be economical only in financial terms, but not in terms of time.

If you are planning to visit the islands of the Aegean Sea, then it is worth checking out the prices for ferries. It's usually cheaper to get to the desired island, having flown to Athens and boarded a ship there. This recommendation will be especially relevant for those who decide to visit not popular islands Rhodes or Crete, and smaller ones, for example, Milos or Santorini. The cost of tickets for the same route can vary significantly, as it depends on many factors: the carrier company, the speed of the vessel you choose, and the type of cabin. You can find out the exact cost and book a ticket on one of the specialized websites. You can easily find them on the Internet.

Tricks for economical holidays

At all, low prices are one of the undeniable advantages of a holiday in Greece. And how nice it is that costs can be reduced even more. Here are the tricks experienced travelers share with you:

  • It is best to book a hotel room in advance. This will save money, especially if you do it during seasonal discounts, for example, in May or October;
  • There are plenty of all-inclusive hotels in Greece. But if you prefer to eat on your own, then the cheapest option is to dine at local taverns. Here you will be offered homemade food at affordable prices;
  • Most travel agencies offer discounts and promotions on excursions. By purchasing them as a “set”, you can receive one excursion as a gift;
  • do not hesitate to bargain with local taxi drivers if you decide to use their services rather than public transport. They like to overcharge tourists.
  • You won’t be able to save much on renting a car in Greece. Choose a small, economical car, because gasoline prices here are steep. Oh, and don't forget your international driver's license.
