Riga for the New Year

I was born, raised and live in the city of Vilnius. It just so happens that, considering myself a non-professional traveler, blogger, musician and photographer, I have been doing all of this for a very long time and to some extent I can consider myself an expert in all these areas. Since 2004, he began to travel actively and this moment visited 55 countries of the world. At the same time, I started taking a lot of photographs. I have been playing music since school, I have given a lot of concerts, composed, and played in various groups and projects. Well, my interest in history, especially military history, apparently lies at the genetic level. I write about unconventional travel, interesting places, history and music from all over the world. My texts are all original, most of my photographs are the same.

We all just need to organize a romantic weekend from time to time. I, as a person with 20 years of experience in married life, tell you this with confidence! But it’s not always possible to do everything right.

My wife and I have had a lot of weekends like this, so we have some experience. Today I was attacked by an attack of unheard-of generosity, so I am sharing with the whole world advice on how and where to properly spend time alone with a loved one, in order to relax both soul and body, and then “there was no excruciating pain” for wasted time!

So, here are my ten tips or, to be on trend, “lifehacks”!

Tip 1. For the perfect weekend, you need to get away from home. Time and money limit our capabilities, but not our desires. My choice this time is capital of Latvia Riga. There is plenty to do here, the city has excellent infrastructure, many extraordinary attractions, and most importantly, the sea is nearby. True romantics cannot live without it!

Tip 2. Getting to Riga will not be difficult. This can be done by plane, train, car, or, most inexpensively, by bus (from LUX Express company, for example, prices start from 5 Euros from neighboring Tallinn and Vilnius one way).

Tip 3. Perhaps the most sensitive moment after choosing a destination is finding a place to live. And it doesn’t matter that you only have to spend two nights there. A wrong choice is guaranteed to ruin any good undertaking. Our choice this time fell on the hotel Park Inn by Radisson Riga Valdemara not at all by chance.

In the throes of searching for the ideal option, it is worth remembering that being with a loved one can not be truly good everywhere. And you shouldn’t save here, although you shouldn’t overpay either. The golden mean presupposes high criteria of cleanliness, comfort, quality and location.

The international hotel chain Radisson closely monitors such things and you can trust them in these matters, besides, the above-mentioned hotel, built just a year ago, has several additional advantages. My wife and I remembered the delicious breakfasts here in the original interiors of a real Italian pizzeria and excellent views of Riga from the balcony of our room on the ninth floor. Yes, and prices double rooms here they start from only 59 Euros. In a word - I recommend it!

Tip 4. Of course, our choice of Riga was largely due to the city itself. We have been here more than once, and every time we visit, the city reveals itself in a new way.

This time, the objects of the Art Nouveau architectural style, which is also called Riga Art Nouveau, were chosen as the goal of our day's walk.

Seemingly simple apartment buildings with a hundred-year history can give a lot of impressions. True romantics will probably spend this walk counting the lions and dragons on the facades of buildings. In Riga you can easily lose count!

Tip 5. Probably, the female half will want to do a little shopping even with such a short trip. There will be no problems with this in the capital of Latvia. Almost all world brands are present in local stores. The main thing is not to get too carried away, otherwise financial problems cannot be avoided.

I unexpectedly discovered a curious little shop opposite the Riga Art Nouveau Museum on Alberta Street. Here, all the items sold, from clothing and jewelry to posters and postcards, are stylistically related to Riga during the heyday of Art Nouveau. To our surprise, the prices for very original items were more than reasonable.

Tip 6. It is now convenient to move around Riga public transport, and on bicycles. But some purely Baltic bad weather forced us to use a taxi. It turns out that in some cases such services will be even cheaper than the price of bus disposable coupons.

Remember the name Panda. Taxis from this company provide transportation for a surprisingly modest price tag at any time of the day or night. On average, the price for their services in the city center area did not exceed 2.5 Euros.

Tip 7. No less important for a romantic weekend is the choice of places to eat. In this regard, Riga is for last years made a huge leap forward. In fact, here you can find restaurants and cafes in the spirit of all modern trends. We most remember the restaurants on the embankment of Andreevsky Island or in Latvian Andrejsala.

In fact, this area has not been an island for a long time. IN Soviet time Various port and industrial facilities were located here. Later, all this was mostly abandoned and taken away. Now the Riga authorities are gradually transforming this area in the spirit of a modern multifunctional space.

Here I was immediately reminded of the similar Tallinn district of Telliskivi. Here, just like there, various events, concerts are regularly held, and most importantly, several very pleasant restaurants with world cuisine are open. The place is unusual and worthy of attention, and most importantly, not at all worn out by tourists. If you're nearby, be sure to stop by!

Tip 8. If suddenly you, like us, are unlucky with the Baltic weather, remember that there are excellent SPA complexes in Riga. One of them, ESPA Riga, we especially liked them. Firstly, it is located almost in the very center of the city next to a hotel built in Soviet times Raddison Blu Latvija. Secondly, the interiors here are very romantic. One working fireplace next to the swimming pool is worth it! Well, thirdly, there is another powerful plus, which I will put in a separate paragraph.

Tip 9. After water procedures the evening can be continued at Skyline Bar, located on the top floor of the above hotel.

Evening views of Riga from there will rock you! Here you can have a light snack and try local cocktails. Can you think of a better way to end the day together!?!

Tip 10. You should end your romantic trip to Riga in Jurmala by the sea. Believe me, you can find it here Amazing places, if you don’t get hung up on the main streets of the famous Latvian resort, but go away from them, yes, further.

We are ours little paradise found on a deserted nudist beach at the very beginning of Jurmala. From the entrance to the resort, mysterious forest paths lead there, a walk along which is guaranteed to give a lot of impressions.

This is how our nth weekend together turned out. And you know, we will remember it! After all, this time we succeeded!

Relocation options

You can get to Riga without transfers using branded passenger trains from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Moscow train 001Р “Latvijas Express” departs from Riga Station at 17:08, along the way it stops at nine stations and arrives in Riga 16.2 hours later, at 9:24. Due to their low cost, tickets for general seats are very popular, but to occupy comfortable sleeping places in such a carriage you will need luck.

During the winter and summer holiday season, when passenger traffic increases noticeably, an additional train “Jurmala” 003P/004P begins running between the two capitals. In addition, train 183Р/184Р is periodically scheduled from Riga to Moscow and back. It departs from the Riga railway station at 21:02 and arrives at the Riga railway station at 12:06.

Train 037Р “Baltia” runs from St. Petersburg to Riga; it departs from Vitebsk station at 17:20 and arrives at the station in Riga the next morning at 9:24. This schedule is very convenient for tourists: during the night on the road they have time to sleep well and arrive in Riga full of energy and ready for new experiences.

When crossing the border by rail, passport and customs control passengers pass through without leaving the train: border guards themselves enter the carriage, check their belongings and passports.

Riga railway station, where all trains arrive, is located in the central part of the city. By the way, within a five-minute walk from the station there is a minibus stop that takes you to Jurmala.

Riga is not only the most big city Latvia, but also the entire Baltic. And in its region in terms of population, it is second only to St. Petersburg and Stockholm. But, of course, many tourists coming to the capital of Latvia are attracted not by this, but by its many attractions.

Holidays in Riga are an opportunity to see such, without exaggeration, masterpieces of architects as the Church of St. Peter, the Dome Cathedral and the Cathedral of St. James, built respectively in 1209, 1211 and 1225. That is, these three historical and architectural monument are almost the same age as the famous Parisian Cathedral of Notre Damme!

But this is only a small part of what you can see in Riga. There is also the Riga Castle, which is now the residence of the president of the country, and the Powder Tower, and the House of the Blackheads and many other interesting attractions. In the Old Town, be sure to look at the House of Cats - an ancient building of the early 20th century, the spiers of its two towers are decorated with single figures of black cats, and learn from the guide interesting story this attraction.

If holidays for you mean cultural enrichment and the opportunity to learn something new, then Riga will not disappoint you. The city has many museums. This is the Military Museum, the Museum of the History of Latvian railway, Riga Motor Museum, Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, Art Museum and many others. But a holiday in Riga is, of course, not only excursions around its interesting places. The capital of Latvia is big, modern city with many cultural and entertainment facilities. It is, first of all, Latvian National Theater, Riga State Operetta Theatre, Latvian National Opera and Riga Russian Theater named after Mikhail Chekhov. If you are vacationing in this city with children, be sure to visit the Latvian Puppet Theater, as well as the Riga Zoo.

If you come to Riga on holiday in the summer, you will probably find yourself at one of the many music festivals that are held at this time of year: from classical opera to modern jazz and rock. Fans of more down-to-earth leisure will also not be disappointed. Many restaurants, bars and casinos will gladly welcome tourists to show how memorable a holiday in Riga can be! The prices, of course, will also be remembered... However, they are still lower than in such European capitals like Paris, Vienna, Rome, London etc.

And if you are tired of the influx of impressions, visit one of the many parks in Riga and just sit on a bench admiring the nature around you. This could be Vermansky Park - oldest park city, and Victory Park, famous for its landscape design, and the Viestura Garden, founded by Peter I. And in total there are more than ten parks in the city that will diversify your holiday in Riga, the cost of which will be immeasurably less than the cost of a vacation in a casino. And there are probably more benefits. But, as they say, there is no arguing about tastes.

In conclusion. Riga - a beautiful city with its indescribable aura. And to feel it, just walk along the ancient, cobbled streets of the old city. Walk through the places where the heavy boots of Peter I and the light shoes of Anna Pavlovna Kern, sung in Pushkin’s poems, walked. Breathe the Riga air, and gradually the charm of this city, intoxicating like Riga balm, will fill you. Then you can say that you have visited Riga!
