The best attractions are natural, best vacation– periodic change of picture, the best beach is a combination of rocky bays, sandy shore and azure water. For all this we are going to Greece, to Sithonia Peninsula, which is on Halkidiki.

Don't let fame scare you Halkidiki as a package tourist mecca. Organized tourists mainly gather on the neighboring finger - Kassandra. Sithonia is practically at the mercy of independent travelers and it is in this part of Halkidiki that a scattering of the most beautiful Greek beaches, bays and coves.

Information taken from personal experience two travel to Halkidiki, the advice of the locals with whom we lived during these travels helped a lot.

The infrastructure of most places is limited to parking, often just a dirt lot or a place along the cliffs or the sea. Almost everywhere there is a beach bar and sun loungers. Sun loungers are free if you use the bar - just buy one or two drinks, prices are the same as everywhere else on the coast. Beer, of course, is more expensive than in the supermarket. Near some bays and beaches there are mobile cantinas - mini buffets where you can eat/snack and drink.

There are no hotels nearby, at most a campsite, and often nothing at all. It is enough to step away from any of these places and you will find yourself alone even at the height of the season.

Vourvourou

Let's start from the northwestern side of Sithonia, from an area called Vourvourou. Vourvour is adjacent to several small islands, near which there is Blue Lagoon . You can get to it by boat with a motor; you rent a boat in the village on the shore - there is a wide choice, the price is 60-100 euros per day. The entire water area in the Vourvourou area deserves to come here especially and spend time on these islands. Bring a supply of food and drinks with you. Plan the whole day.

Actually Vourvourou coast there are a couple good restaurants by the sea, that is if you have plans for the evening.

Near Vourvourou there is a popular Karidi beach. It’s worth visiting if time permits, there is no infrastructure, nature is the sea and Pine forest. During the high season, Karidi beach is packed with people, so if you like privacy, come in September. However, this rule applies to almost the entire coast of Sithonia and Chalkidiki.

Lakara Camping and Beach

Lakara Beach– that classic combination of sand, azure sea and picturesque rocks around. Like many beautiful places in Greece, there is a campsite of the same name – Lakara. But everyone is allowed into the campsite, the beach is free. You will have to pay if you want to leave your car at the campsite - they have their own parking lot at the entrance. Everyone is allowed in. Parking costs 5 Euro. There is no parking on the road.

There are not many people even in August, that is, enough to enjoy swimming and beach holidays if you want to lie on the sand.

The campsite is inhabited mainly by Bulgarians; many have a whole tent farm with beds, TVs and the like.

Due to the fact that there is a campsite on the beach and many people think that it is closed to outsiders, and also not particularly noticeable from the road, there are not many people at sea. If you get to Sitoia during the peak season, you can safely go to Lakara.

Bahia Bay and Beach

After Lakar, after about three kilometers, there is a sign for Bahia Beach. The beach is tiny and hemmed in on all sides by rocks. You can drive straight to the sea along a dirt road; if you are careful, any car will pass. Parking is free.

Orange Beach or Orange Beach (Portocali)

A truly hippy-Rastafarian place in Halkidiki, very beautiful and equally popular.

Orange Beach is a must-see for organized tourists. They are brought briefly by boat to admire the natural beauty of the coast and Portocali Bay.

Anyone can pitch a tent on Portocali Beach completely free of charge. There are several cantinas, toilets and changing rooms in the public part of the beach.

The beach itself is divided into several lobes, as if half an orange was placed flat side down and pressed on it. Only a small part of the beach is reserved for sun loungers, which is crowded with people even in September. I advise you to come here early in the morning and spend a couple of hours wandering around the rocks and swimming.

Platanitsi Beach

If you drive along the main road along the coast, towards the sea at eye level of the car passenger there will be an inconspicuous sign indicating Platanitsi Beach. In fact, it is a large area with a campsite and a long beach, the edges of which are decorated with rocks.

Anyone can enter the campsite. In September we didn’t pay for parking, it was deserted - the campsite is most likely open until the end of August or at most until the beginning of September.

The beach itself is about two hundred meters of light yellow sand, along the edges there are beautiful rocks and boulders. If you go behind the rocks, you can find a couple more mini beaches for privacy. But there is almost always someone there and, as a rule, they are nudists.

You can look at Platonitsi beach from above. To do this, we leave the territory and move half a kilometer up the road. We see an observation deck and a mobile cantina (cafe). We make an obligatory stop and admire the views of the coast and bay.

Ahlada Beach

After the beach Platanitsi There is very little left until Sarti. Myself Sarti– boring tourist place, a haven for package tourists. That's why Sarti is not included in my list of the best beaches and coves. And here before reaching Sarti there is an amazingly beautiful bay - Ahlada Beach. There are no signs to it or I just didn’t notice, so use Google maps or Maps.me to navigate.

Platania Beach

We drive past the flat and long beach in Sarti without stopping and proceed to the next bay - Platania Beach.

To the right and to the left of Platania Beach there are hiking trails along the rocks along the sea. A long and spectacular trail leads from Platania Beach almost to Sarti Beach - I recommend taking a walk along it. I can’t guarantee cleanliness near the trail itself, since the “savages” standing in tents go to the coastal bushes to use the toilet. But the views along the entire trail are simply magical.

Back to Platania beach along the same path. You can go and see the only luxury stores Apartment Talizeti - they have a steep territory, the price is steep - 200-300 euros per season, there are never any places in the summer.

Goa beach

The small Goa beach, also sandwiched between the rocks, is named after the bar, which is the main attraction of this place. Wooden black carved figures, chairs with panoramic view on the sea and several sun loungers for bar clients. A very atmospheric place - it’s worth stopping for at least an hour, having a cocktail or beer, taking a swim and moving on.

Tigania Beach

Tigania- perhaps the most secret Sithonia beach. At least we didn’t find it the first time, when we got to road repairs, we took a detour and about an hour after leaving Goa beach parked on steep cliffs nearby.

To get to the beach Tigania Beach, first follow the signs or the map for longer and more famous beach Krioritsi, which starts right after Tigania Beach. Before reaching Krioritsi you need to look at the signs on the road itself, the names of the beach will be written on the afalta - Tigania Beach, follow them, not forgetting to check the route with the maps on your smartphone.

Tigania Beach has three small beaches, a beach bar and umbrellas with thatched roofs, there are sun loungers - they are provided free of charge to visitors and bar clients. The first place we decided to visit was the village of Metamorfosi. The beaches are awesome! The village itself is surrounded by greenery. Shady embankments, many taverns and all sorts of shops. Tourists have plenty to do here. We didn’t stay long in Metamorfosi, as we wanted to find a cozy cove to sunbathe and swim. Therefore, after winding through the narrow streets of Metamorfosi, we again drove out onto the main road. You can imagine what happens here during the high season. There will be nowhere to park the car for sure.

Three kilometers short of the town of Kalogria, we saw what we were looking for, or rather, a cozy sandy beach. We left the highway along a broken dirt path. There were already two cars of tourists parked here, but they didn’t bother us at all. We enjoyed sunbathing on the golden sand, and I even went fishing.

I caught fish right from the neighboring rocks. It bites on shells and bread. The fish is not big, but the very fact of fishing in Sithonia was important. Actually, that’s why we went, to lie on secluded beaches and enjoy the azure sea and amazing scenery. We saw enough of the sights of Greece on our last trip to the Peloponnese.
After the village of Neos Marmaras, the terrain in Sithonia becomes mountainous and the roads more winding. Coastal cliffs appear, among which amazing secluded beaches can be seen through the dense thickets, one better than the other. Your eyes run wild, you don’t know where it’s better to make your next stop.

My camera almost never turned off. However, as soon as we left Neos Marmaras, we immediately turned towards the sea from the main road onto the first dirt path we came across. We drive a couple of kilometers along a rapidly descending and incredibly winding serpentine road.

We turned somewhere towards the sea. Not a single car for the meeting. But in the high season there is more traffic here.

We followed this lady at a speed of 20 km for about half an hour. I didn’t dare to overtake through a double solid road.

The speed is not high, because at any moment an equally wild tourist in a rented car can jump out from around the next turn. It is difficult to get lost by car in Sithonia. You can always see the sea through the thickets, and this is the best landmark. You need to drive so that the sea is always on the right.

On the left there is a cliff, on the right there are rocks. We are trying to get back out of the mountain dead end.

Suddenly the path ends up in the sea. We see a sign with a sign for the Poseidon Hotel, and nearby, among the trees, the barely visible outlines of a house. Upon closer examination, this house turns out to be a lonely tavern with the proud name “Panos”. As often happens, it later became clear that this is one of the best fish taverns in Halkidiki.

Here we made a stop to warm up.

From this place Turtle Island is clearly visible. Here we go out to warm up and decide to have a cup of Greek coffee. By the way, the Greeks are very offended if you ask for “Turkish coffee”. At the tavern we were greeted by a bored and taciturn waitress. We rested a bit, drank tea and coffee and continued our journey along the coast of Sithonia.

At this point, after the Poseidon Hotel, the road became so narrow that if a car had come towards us, we would definitely not have passed each other. Fortunately this did not happen. On the right side we had a steep cliff to the sea, and on the left there was a wall with overhanging stones and tree roots. During downpours and rains, it is not recommended to travel along such camel trails. Firstly, it is slippery, and secondly, cobblestones fly down onto the road along with streams of water. But in calm May weather there are stunning views.

Somewhere in the mountains. Sithonia has magnificent landscapes and nature. Clean mountain air, many coniferous forests. This area is useful not only for recreation, but also for health.

After rattling the suspension for 5-6 kilometers along a dirt serpentine road, we suddenly find ourselves on an asphalt road and are already driving non-stop with the desire to have a snack somewhere. But, no matter how hungry we were, driving past Porto Kaufo (the town of Kaufos), we still could not help but stop at this picturesque beach.

More precisely, it is a small cove with fishing schooners and boats. This bay is protected from the sea by two mountains, so there are never waves here in any weather. Swimming is a pleasure. That's what we did. There were no other swimmers besides us.
After water procedures Our appetite has increased even more, and very conveniently, right on the side of the road we come across a lonely tavern. However, we didn’t find the coveted “moussaka” on the menu.

And it was somehow windy up here. But a tipsy elderly Italian man and his girlfriend (or wife) became attached to us. After asking me to photograph them against the backdrop of the mountains (which I did, of course), he began to tell me in broken English that Italy also has the same mountains and that Russia is harasho. Or something like that. After which, staggering (and I kept thinking, where will he go so “warm”?) I headed to the rented Opel. They sat down, with grandfather behind the wheel, and, slowly, set off further along their route.

We didn’t stay here either, although the views from the veranda of this tavern were magnificent. Having driven several kilometers, we lined up behind the already familiar Opel and, at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour, trailed behind it for about twenty minutes until we saw a sign to the village of Kalamitsi, where we immediately turned.

Here we drove straight onto the embankment. Thus we reached the very extreme tip of Sithonia. Here we decided to have lunch. The place was picturesque, with a beautiful bay and many taverns. In one of them we sat at a table in the fresh air overlooking the sea. The tables of this tavern are set right under the trees of the embankment and on them, without hesitation or fear of anything, Greek sparrows jump and strive to peck off a piece of moussaka, which was brought to us 20 minutes after ordering. We ate for 15 euros. One moussaka, a portion of souvlaki, coffee, tea and a bottle of water. In general, not expensive.

The road passes through the rocks in these places. Around every turn you will see another stunning view of the sea and Mount Athos. Be sure to turn into the village of Sarti. The place is very picturesque, with magnificent sandy beaches, ancient Greek streets and taverns. In my opinion, only here you can feel the real Greek atmosphere and originality. This is truly the most picturesque in all of Halkidiki.

As we were leaving Sarti, a small turtle suddenly jumped out onto our road. At the last second I manage to turn the steering wheel so as not to crush this creature. I stop on the side of the road and go back to move it out of the way. Taking this opportunity, I take a souvenir photo with this local landmark.

Driving through the mountains above the village of Zografou, we were caught in a heavy downpour. Streams of water poured from the sky as if from a bucket. We had to stop on the side of the road, otherwise: firstly, nothing was visible, secondly, pieces of soil with stones began to fall from the mountains right under the wheels of our Toyota and, thirdly, I didn’t want to look like the smartest, because everyone who happened to be on this road with us also stood by the side of the road.

After about half an hour, the rain stopped and the sun came out again. We calmly continued our journey by car around Sithonia.
We read a lot on the Internet about the town of Vourvourou. We decided to come here. Nothing special. True, it’s probably great to relax here. Lots of hotels that are basically apartments. The beach has sand, quiet, not deep coves and no waves.

Thus, our journey by car in Halkidiki has come to an end. We were in a hurry to get back to the hotel before sunset. In addition, the fuel level light began to blink, gas stations in Chalkidiki in dark time they don't work for days. It seems from 20.00 to 6 am. This was the second day of our trip by car in Halkidiki. .

1. Kalamitsi beach

Kalamitsi Beach, which our tourists consider the best, is a medium-sized beach and is located in the southern part of Sithonia - exactly 5 km from the city of Sykia and 15 km from Sarti and Toroni. It is located in a beautiful bay, so it is completely protected from the winds with calm waters, and the bay has direct access to the sea, which means that the water on the beach is very clean.

The beach is well organized with several taverns, cafes and rental agencies for active rest, such as rental of boats or canoes and diving equipment.

Kalamitsi beach has quite a long coastline, which for the most part is not organized. So if you prefer not to pay for sun loungers, Kalamitsi is a great choice. It is covered in soft sand that continues into the sea with an incredibly brilliant blue color and is ideal for families with children looking for shallow waters and sun-warmed waters.

Despite the fact that the beaches located in this part of Sithonia (Megaportokali and Dukina beaches) received more votes from our tourists, the majority of votes were won by the orange Portokali beach.
Orange Beach is located about 7 kilometers from Sarti, the beach has a bar, twenty umbrellas and about 40 sun loungers. Unfortunately, the great popularity has led to an influx of huge numbers of holidaymakers, especially during the high season.

Despite this sad fact, visit it at least once because they say: “Whoever has not been to the orange beach has not been to Sithonia”.

The color of the sea on this beach is turquoise and very transparent, and the sand is soft. We recommend diving around the rocks.

Lagomandra beach is actually two very beautiful sandy beach. It is located north of Neos Marmaras, at a distance of about 7 km and is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches in this part of Sithonia. This is the beach with big amount natural natural shades, which are set off by dense pine forests.

The southern part of the Lagomandra coastline, which is also popular among tourists, offers activities aquatic species sports and visit beach bars. But its northern part is privately owned by nearby hotels.

Both beaches have soft sand and are fantastic for swimming. In the northern part, the shallow waters are shorter and reach depth faster, while the sea in the southern part is very shallow and ideal for children.

Kalogria Beach, located just 8 km from Nikiti, is one of the pearls of Sithonia and deserves to be included in the TOP 5 beaches.

In the seventies it was a nudist beach, but due to the popularization of Sithonia today it is one of the most popular beaches for families with children, both among Greeks and among many tourists from Russia and other countries.

Kalogria beach is covered with white sand, there are bars, sun loungers and umbrellas. The crystal clear shallow sea makes it ideal for small children.

Karidi Beach is located in Vourvourou, it is easily accessible and families with children love to relax there due to the warm and shallow sea coast.

Karidi is a pine-scented beach with views of Athos and soft white sand that continues into shallow waters in the depths turquoise sea. The beach is very popular, so you should definitely expect crowds during the season.

Of course, the beautiful beaches in Sithonia are not limited to this list of five beaches. Let us also note others that are certainly loved by many of our tourists: Klimataria, Lagonissi, Tigania, Agios Ioannis... and many others.

Having received a rental car for 4 days, on the first day we went to explore our entire peninsula around the perimeter. We traveled almost all around Sithonia, examined almost all densely populated, sparsely populated and completely wild beaches. The most best beaches– wild :)

On the map the blue dot indicates our location. This is the village of Metamorfosi. We left it in the morning and returned to it in the evening.

The Chalkidiki peninsula branches into three peninsulas - Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. The middle peninsula is Sithonia. We will go around it, along the red road on the map. The whole route is about 160 km, it took us all day. No one was tired, because there were a lot of places where we stopped and swam, or simply looked at the views from the shore.

Going down from the highway near the village Kalogrias, the first wild sandy beach of today appears before our eyes:

Here is the first swim of the day. Half an hour passes and we get ready to move on.

This is what the village of Neos Marmaras looks like from the coastal highway:

Yes... People here don’t know what slate or ondulin is, here there are only natural tiles. :)

Taking a closer look at it, it becomes clear why it was called Turtle. Look at it carefully:

And the roads in Greece are of very decent quality, I have already described them. Such a “pothole” is the maximum inconvenience, and they are rare:

Here the road again approached the shore, zigzag to the left, but we already saw a small sand spit ahead, with a small rock and a beach on it. You need to see everything there and take a swim!
We park the car next to the spit, go swimming and explore the rock:

They lie in the water and don’t bother anyone. Such sweethearts! You just can’t touch them, you can only admire them.

The sea is always calm here, and during World War II several Allied submarines hid in this bay.

Thus we reached the village Sarti.
Sarti has become a very popular resort town, which stretches along the beach with the honorable Blue Flag. The beach offers amazing views of Mount Athos, which rises steeply from the sea and with its peak in the clouds resembles a slightly smoking volcano.

There really seems to be smoke curling over the mountain, like a volcano :) But this is just a “caught” cloud.

After lunch at a cafe on Sarti beach, we move on.

And the next stop is at Vourvourou:

Here the beach has fine sand and a very smooth entrance to the sea. It's perfect for children to frolic in the water! We stay for an hour, swim, sunbathe.

It’s getting dark and we finish our detour around the peninsula of Sithonia, the middle finger of the Halkidiki peninsula. According to legend, once upon a time in Chalkidiki, Greece, two brothers Siton and Athos fought for the beautiful maiden Pallini. The noise of the struggle awakened Poseidon, who was sleeping nearby, and he threw his trident in anger. Thus, on the southern tip of the Chalkidiki peninsula, three fingers, three peninsulas were formed - Athos, Sithonia and Pallini. Pallini was later renamed Kassandra. And if you look at the map of Halkidiki, then South part it really resembles a trident.

And we continue our detour around Sithonia, and here’s another stop:

In Sithonia (as well as in Kassandra, and throughout the rest of Greece) it is not at all necessary to book a hotel in advance, especially through a travel agency. Arriving on the peninsula, you can rent a villa or part of a villa. For example, this one.
