There are no direct flights from Moscow or St. Petersburg. It is most profitable to fly with a transfer in Madrid or Barcelona, ​​especially if you buy tickets from low-cost airlines (for example, a three-hour flight from Madrid to the island cost us only 50 EUR per person in both directions). You can fly from Germany very cheaply (or). On our second trip, we flew from Munich and a five-hour flight cost us 45 EUR per passenger round trip. Well, getting to Germany or Spain is not at all difficult; there are several flights a day from both capitals. You just need to choose the one that suits the price. For example, taking a round-trip ticket for 200 EUR is more than realistic.

After the Spanish conquest, the inhabitants quickly became “Hispanicized,” intermarriage produced lighter-skinned men and women, and the Spanish language finally replaced the ancient Guanche dialects.

The main mystery of the Guanches is that it is completely unclear where they came from. It is believed that they could not sail from Africa, since they had practically no fleet, only reed boats, on which it was simply impossible to travel a hundred kilometers across the ocean. At one time, scientists even put forward the theory that these were inhabitants of the sunken Atlantis.

Fishing

Fishing is an ancient way of survival for the islanders, but today everything more tourists engage in sport fishing.

To ensure that guests do not cause irreparable damage to nature, special rules have been developed:

• catching mussels is prohibited from April 1 to June 30 and from September 1 to November 30, in addition, the minimum shell size must be 7 cm;
• coastal fishing: it is not allowed to use nets or stifle fish;
• underwater fishing: it is prohibited to fish at night, use electric or explosive mechanisms, traps, etc. The maximum catch per person is 5 kg; for group fishing (5 or more people), the weight of the catch is limited to 25 kg;
• classic fishing: no more than two fishing rods and three hooks can be used at a time, one person can catch no more than 4 kg of fish;
• Recreational Deep Sea Fishing: Cannot be conducted within one-half mile of professional fishing vessels, with a maximum of 3 fish allowed.

All fish can be caught only for personal use, not for sale. Equipment is usually rented, but you can bring your own. At the same time, the service itself is quite expensive compared to other types of recreation: the cost starts from 25 EUR.

The Canary Current and the deep, nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Africa provide excellent diving conditions in the region. In addition, these places are not inhabited by dangerous marine animals and plants, and the visibility and transparency of the water are very high.

In Fuerteventura there is a significant difference between the windward and leeward sides. On the windward side there are often less favorable conditions, but the marine flora and fauna are much more vibrant. Here it is the entire territory from Corralejo to Punta Pesebra. It is very interesting to dive near Ajui beach, where behind a large rocky plateau there begin caves with steep walls and passages along which schools of fish swim.

The most interesting places for diving La Cresta and La Herradura, but diving there is quite dangerous, so only experienced divers are allowed there.

On the Jandia Peninsula, conditions are calmer, even beginners are allowed to dive here, and the diving season lasts all year.

Sailing

All taxis in Fuerteventura are official and metered. The cars look the same: they have a diagonal stripe on the body. There is always a taxi sign on the roof that glows green when the car is free.

The journey costs approximately 1-1.50 EUR per kilometer, plus about 3 EUR you will have to pay for landing. At night, on holidays and for passengers with luggage, the fare increases by 10-15%. Most often, drivers can give you an approximate price estimate before the trip: they know the island very well. Be sure to check in advance about the possibility of paying by card: this service is not available in all cars.

Taxi drivers, as a rule, speak English, willingly talk about the surrounding area, but are not overly sociable: if you want to drive in silence, they will not intrude on conversations. The cars are clean, comfortable, with air conditioning. In general, the ride is a pleasure.

You can call a taxi by phone (but you will have to pay a little extra for this), or you can take it directly in the city, on the streets or in special parking lots.

Public transport

As already mentioned, the only type public transport- buses. They connect almost all cities and villages; a special bus, made on the basis of an SUV, even goes to Cofete beach.

In my practice, transport always arrived on schedule, although I came across reviews about the poor performance of the bus network. Perhaps this is all in the past. Each station and stop in cities has a timetable, so you can figure out what time to wait for your flight.

Travel on buses is inexpensive, even for long distances you will spend 10-15 EUR, the cabins are very comfortable, with air conditioning and comfortable seats. In my opinion, this is one of the most practical ways to get around in Fuerteventura.

However, you need to understand that along the way the driver will turn into all the surrounding towns and villages, so the path will be much longer than if you go by car.

Transport rental

For those who drive a car, the most convenient option is to rent a car. Then you will be able to go even to places where you cannot reach by bus.

There are rental points in all major cities, but the easiest way is to take transport directly at the airport or order it in advance from home. This way you can save a lot of money.

Renting on the island is inexpensive - from 30 EUR per day (you can see options), besides, almost nowhere they take a deposit, however, they are not allowed on the ferry, that is, you will not be able to sail to another island with your car. In addition, full insurance is required.

In order to complete a transaction, you must, firstly, be over 21 years old, secondly, have an international driving license and, finally, provide a passport.

Roads on the island are free and mostly good. But in some places a perfectly flat and new track can suddenly end, and then a dirt road begins. Not all the roads in Fuerteventura have been rebuilt yet, but they are very keen on this.

Fines are quite high in Fuerteventura, so the rules traffic and it’s better not to disturb parking. Where the curb is marked with a solid yellow line, you cannot park, and in cities you can often see a blue line, which means that parking is paid. It is more profitable to find a hotel or apartment with its own parking.

Both the driver and all passengers must wear seat belts. When driving in a circle, the car that is already moving in a circle usually has the right of way, but there are exceptions: pay attention to the signs.

The road to Kofeta is very dangerous and you can only drive there in 4x4 vehicles; for passenger cars, this route is not even included in any insurance!

And, of course, you should never drive while intoxicated.

Fuerteventura - holidays with children

Fuerteventura has a fairly mild climate, large sandy beaches and a high level of safety, so these places are great for families with children. The only negative is enough cold water in the ocean, you can’t swim all the time.

However, many parents come here with their kids and are satisfied. As a rule, children easily adapt to the climate and practically do not undergo acclimatization.

It is best to choose quiet and quiet resorts Jandi, the waves here are not so strong, so swimming will be better. But under no circumstances should children be allowed into the ocean alone, even in shallow water! I already wrote about the danger reverse currents, for children they are even more scary.

Children (and adults too) will find it very interesting to visit Oasis Park near the town of La Lajita. This is an amazing wildlife reserve, which 30 years ago was a bare desert. Today it is a gigantic area covered with greenery, home to several hundred species of animals, birds and marine life, including those that wildlife are not found on the island.

Tickets for teenagers over 12 years old and adults cost 33 EUR, for children from 4 to 11 years old - 19.50 EUR, for people over 60 years old - 28 EUR. Additionally, you can pay for a camel safari, interaction with lemurs and sea lions. Detailed information can be obtained from the park (at English language).

Tickets can be purchased in advance on the Internet or directly on site; the park is open 365 days a year from 9.00 to 18.00.

Every morning at 8.15 - 9.30 they travel from different areas of Fuerteventura free buses to Oasis Park, at 16.30 - 17.30 flights return. You can leave from Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma, Corralejo, Esquinzo, Otros and from the Jandia Peninsula. The schedule is also on the website.

The park has free bicycle parking, all paths are suitable for people using a wheelchair, a free Jungle Bus runs through the territory every ten minutes from 12.00 to 17.00 in the summer and from 12.00 to 16.30 in the winter. In addition, there are several shops and cafes in the park, there are playground for children, baby changing facilities and a four-wheel scooter rental service.

5 must-do things in this region

Fuerteventura is a truly amazing place. And, thinking about the five things that need to be done here, I would like to say: visit here five times! And then maybe five more. And further!

There is marvelous nature here, almost untouched by man, very beautiful landscapes, a stunning ocean, but most importantly, here it’s like you’re learning to hear yourself again. Therefore, you need to come here and breathe, breathe this freedom, catch the wind in your hair and feel alone with the world.

But I will still try to highlight five points:

1. Walk a few kilometers along Big Beaches Corralejo admiring the kite surfers. Or maybe try flying yourself!
2. Go to Betancuria to see the history of the island with your own eyes and find out who Betancur was. Spoiler: he was a Frenchman who discovered the Canary Islands in 1402 and became the local viceroy. And one of his descendants, born in the Canaries almost four centuries later, worked in Russia for a long time. This engineer designed the Moscow Manege, bridges in Peterhof and Stone Island In Petersburg. And this great-great-grandson of the great John de Betancourt, in whose honor the capital of Fuerteventura was named, was buried at the Smolensk cemetery in St. Petersburg.
3. Relax on the Jandia Peninsula - the southernmost, most beachy and probably the most beautiful on the entire island.
4. Go to Cofete Beach to find out what an endless coastline is and, at the same time, the most beautiful edge of the world. By the way, right next to the beach there is a tiny cemetery where residents of the village of Kofete are buried. Small (no higher than the knee) wooden crosses behind a stone fence, which are covered by the sand of the great ocean roaring nearby - the best allegory of eternal peace.
5. And finally feed the wild parrots! :)
