Cathedral of St. Mary

Palma Cathedral (Catedral de Santa Maria or La Seu) resembles a huge Gothic ship moored off the coast of Palma. Its construction on the site of the main mosque lasted from 1300 to 1601. The facade of the cathedral was restored after the earthquake of 1851 in Art Nouveau style according to the designs of Antoni Gaudi.

The entrance to the cathedral is preceded by a museum of paintings on religious themes and items made of precious metals. The most impressive details of the interior are the bright stained glass windows and the extraordinary forged sculpture of Gaudí. Local artist Miguel Barcelo also contributed to the design, painting one of the altars on the biblical theme of loaves and fishes.
